35.5:"The lack of empathy".

"Appi, we are not safe here". Hanan cried

She looks around to find her phone which she remembers that she must have left at the show but then her manager came with a bag with him so she leaps towards the bag ripping it and taking her phone out.

"Remember my number and call me at once if you need me, ok?".

She remembers how his voice held softness yet desperation and she didn't even think twice before punching in his number dialling it with the voice outside her door still going on. She held onto Hanan's hand desperately hoping he answers his call and after a few rings when she lost hope, he answered.

"Hello?". His voice rings through her soul calming her down a little

"S-Shayaan". She said stuttering as she was at the edge of breaking down

"Mahak?. Is that you?". He asked worriedly

"Yes". She said sniffing

"What's wrong?. What happened?. Speak to me". He said anxiously feeling his heart leaping out of his chest

"I-I-, can you come to my apartment, please?". She pleaded

"I am coming right now. Just hold on for few minutes". He said and she ended the call

On the other hand, he was with his friends who were like his family explaining them everything when he heard his phone ringing. At first, he didn't want anyone to disturb his family time but then something in him told him to answer.

And he hasn't been glad of his six senses to this day because the minute he heard her fragile voice his heart hammered and his face pale. He didn't even care about his friend or anything besides to know what went down that had her this shaken. But, the moment she asked for him to come to her he was running out of his house with his friends calling behind him but he didn't have time to luxurious waste it in explaining.

He didn't even see if he is in the right clothes or shoe. He just runs to his car driving through the streets like a mad man, not caring about anything besides to reach her before something he regrets happens to her. He doesn't understand why his heart was gripped in such strong fear as he has never seen it before in his life.

Not even almost 5 years before.

Or perhaps he was this scared because of that night. He runs towards the receptionist towards the elevator punching in repeatedly wishing this damn elevator move faster. He exits to her floor and since it was only her apartment here. He went banging on the door.

Hanan looks at the door pale and the earlier voice vanished a few minutes ago and she isn't sure if it was the same man. She heard her sister speaking to her husband before and she wonders if it's him.

"W-Who is it?". She asked shaking like a leaf

"It's me, Shayaan. Please, open this door". He pleaded

"What's the passcode?". She asked holding the handle of the door

"Red". He replied hurriedly because he remembers her saying it before she ended the call

And the door clicked open.

He immediately moves in looking around and his eyes fell on an almost similar girl to Muskan standing in front of him with fear and anxiety clear on her face.

"Are you ok?". He asked softly and she nodded, "Don't worry. I won't let anyone harm you. Calm down, ok?".

Hanan nodded again, "A-appi, she is-".

Hanan didn't even get to finish her sentence when the door opens and Mahak walks out. The minute their eyes collided he moves toward her engulfing her in his warmth. He was scared beyond his mind and he needed to feel her know that she was not hurt. He pulls her tightly in his hold patting her back as she cries in his hands.

"Shh". He said soothing her a little, "It's ok. I am here now".

Hanan decided it was best to give them privacy as she walks towards her own room.

"I was scared". She cried harder, "I thought he will kill me and my sister. I don't want anyone to hurt her".

He liked the fact a little that she cares for her younger sister but not the fact that she cares for her own self so little.

"It's fine. You are safe". He said softly holding onto her, "Will you tell me what went down?".

She pulls away from him shaking her head and he finds a clear line of worry and fear in her eyes which made him furious and at the same time desperate to know the reason behind it.

"If you won't tell me how will I help?". He asked

"I don't want you involved with him". She said as tears flow down her face

He chooses to ignore him for now. Just for now because he needed to comfort her before anything.

He tapped her nose with his pointer finger, "You know what happens when you decline my help".

She remembers when she refused his help to get down from the van and that made her laugh which he thanked his Lord that at least she is not crying anymore. He wipes the few tears that were on her face smiling softly at her.

"That was because you were mean to me". She stated narrowing her eyes

"Please, you were the one who was after me". He said hiding his smile

"No, I was a completely good person and you were just pure mean". She argued

"Good. As if. Aren't you a complete angel?". He asked rolling his eyes and they still remain in each other arms

"As a matter of fact, I am an angel". She said flipping her hair and her scent made him lose his sense

"I don't think you are one, you look more like a satan". He said smirking as she becomes red with anger

That exact moment Hanan walks in.

"Y-You are...". She trailed off because she can't find a word so she turns to her sister, "What's a worse word than satan?".

Hanan looks at her amused," Ah, I don't-".

"Don't tell her". He piped in

"Why in the world not?. She is my sister. She will tell me". She said angrily

"She is my sister too so she won't tell you". He said shrugging

"When did she become your sister?". She asked glaring at him

"The exact moment you accepted me as your husband". He said grinning

And she blushes. He could have sworn her blush were another beauty of hers. As he has never been moved by someone shyness however her remains so unique and pure that his heart flutters.

Hanan starts to leave and they both turn to her.

"Where are you going?". She asked confused

"To get popcorn". Hanan said shrugging, "Please, don't stop at my account, continue".

She narrows her eyes at her sister, "Why you are getting popcorn?".

"How can I watch such an amazing show without it?". Hanan asked pointing to them

"Leave her. She is always fighting". He said unwrapping his arms around her but holding onto her hand instead, "You both are coming with me".

Hanan and Mahak look at him shocked.

"It's not up for discussion. Whatever went down I don't know about it. But there is no way I am leaving you two here". He said authoritatively

"But-". She started

"I am not giving you a choice because I know you will decline". He said and turns to Hanan, "Can you pack her stuff after you are done with yours".

"Hanan don't-". She started

"I always pack her bags when she goes on trips". Hanan said excitedly

"Perfect. Please, do that for me". He said smiling

Hanan nodded ignoring her sister glare and running to pack their stuff. She huffed tapping her feet with a long face as if someone has declined her wish. He turns to look at her and a chuckle escape his lips to find her sulking over the small thing. He has to agree that to find such endearing sights is becoming his addiction now. She always seems innocent and pure whenever she does something so small yet that small action has a heavy impact on his strong heart.

Because hearts are controlled by the one who has all the powers of this world.

"Bolo gi nahi?". He asked amused watching her frown deeper (you won't talk)

"Sunta kon hai meri jo mai bolo". She said huffing crossing her arms over her chest (who even listen to me when I speak)

He hides his smile, "Achaa meri maa-".

"Mai tumhari maa nahi huin". She said cutting him off (I am not your mother)

He laughs not being able to control himself, "Ji, Ji. Yeh toh mujhe pata hai ap toh meri piyaari begum hain". (Yes, yes. I know that you are my beautiful wife)

"Don't butter me". She said as she small smile stretch on her lips

"Is it working?". He asked grinning

"Maybe". She said shrugging but with a smile on her face

Then the door rings and her face pale as she holds onto his hand and he wraps his arms around her watching her she looks so scared and fragile. He didn't even leave her for a few hours and she looks this bad, he wonders the effect of leaving her for any longer all alone. The thought itself didn't sit well with him and he promised to do something about it.

He walks with her hiding behind him towards the door opening it to reveal the building security.

"Ma'am, we are sorry for the inconvenience because of that man before. He is thrown out and will never enter the building again". The guard said

She meekly nodded closing the door at his face before they even speak. She leans on the wall closing her eyes as her heart hammered against her chest. She needed comfort and some sense of peace and security. If she breaks down like this it will be harder to handle Hanan.

She feels his hand caress her cheeks and his scent immediately assaulting her senses. She didn't open her eyes staying and wanting to feel his comfort. She opens her eyes when she heard Hanan excitedly coming out with their bags.

"We are not going on vacation". She pointed to the bags

Hanan grins childishly that made her shakes her head while he laughs taking the bags from them.

"We should leave now. It's late already". He said smiling

Soon they were standing in front of his family and friends while Hanan being the Introvert hides behind her back.

"Everyone this is my wife- Mahak". He announced without any hesitation smiling at her, "And that's her sister-Hanan".

Hanan moves from behind her and her small hijabi (scarf) covered face appearing in front of everyone as she passes them a small smile with a wave.

"Why do you hide your sister from the showbiz?. She is more pretty than you, are you jealous that she might reach higher than you?". His sister taunted

Hanan's eyes widen looking at the woman she hates the most and her temper increasing as she leaps forward forgetting all her earlier shyness.

"I am going to-". Hanan started

But Mahak held her arm pulling her back towards her.

"Let her be". Mahak said softly to call her down

"Why kind of sick is she that she thinks you will be jealous of me?. Me?. The person you raised yourself". Hanan said glaring at his sister, "If she speaks one more sentence against you, I will personally make sure that she is six feet under the ground".

One thing that everyone fails to see was the man, who is a close friend of Shayaan looking at Hanan amused and impressed.

At least there is someone who hates her as I do.

"Hanan". She said smiling wanting her to stop, "Relax".

Hanan nodded hiding back behind her not before glaring at his sister.

"Appi, I told you before to respect them. They are family". He said confused at the hatred his sister held for them, "I don't appreciate this behaviour and since they will be living with us, I don't wish to see any more of it".

"Whatever". His sister said holding her husband hand walking to their room

He sighs rubbing his hand over his face, "Let me introduce my friends".

He had five friends 3 male (Zain, Rohan, Iftikhar) from which Rohan and Iftikhar were married adding 2 female to his friends' circle. Rohan's wife was Arya (both non-muslim) while Iftikhar wife was Huda.

She nodded smiling at them and Hanan remains behind her nodding slowly.

"One minute you were shy and the next you are a killing machine". Zain commented

Hanan narrows her eyes at him, "I have a personality disorder I sometimes turn into an assassin too. Do you want me to kill you while you are asleep?".

Mahak chuckle at her words shaking her head.

"That will be amazing to watch so are you going to come tonight?". Zain asked unaware of how everyone else is watching him because he finds it fun to speak to her

"Depend on how much you annoy me". Hanan said shrugging

"Acha bus". Shayaan said knowing his friend is doing it on purpose, "We need to have dinner so Zain orders something for everyone while I show them to their room". (Ok, enough)

Zain nodded walking away while Shayaan takes them to their room. He shows Hanan's her room and she went in while he holds her hand taking her to the next room.

"The house looks small but it keeps getting bigger. You have another extra room?". She asked confused

He shakes his head, "Why would I give you another room when you can stay with me?".

She really didn't want to blush but the deep red colour spread across her face and she lowered her head to make a curtain of her hair to hide her face however he enters the room stopping and turning her around. He places his hand under her chin making her look at him and the purity in her heart went straight to his heart.

He kissed her forehead lovingly, "You can change and come down. I will just bring the luggage for you, ok?".

She nodded smiling shyly and he chuckles walking out of the room. He went down to find everyone talking among themselves and he calls Zain to help him with the luggage.

"I can take it to Hanan". Zain offered

Shayaan turns to look at his friend-raising his eyebrows as he leans on his car, "What are you up to?".

Zain brushes the back of his neck nervously, "Nothing".

"Don't play Zain. You should know that woman are meant to be protected, loved and respected not used". Shayaan said seriously

Zain nodded, "I promise I don't have bad intentions".

"However, you do wish to go to her room which is not permissible". Shayaan said as they enter inside the house

"I won't enter her room". Zain said hurriedly

"Fine. But if I find something inappropriate then you will have to pay for it". Shayaan said walking towards his room where he left his wife

Zain nervously went to stand in front of her door trying to come with a good reason besides the bag but the nervousness made all his senses block. He wasn't ever this way he is just more open and free wherever and with whoever he was with then how come all his confidence is gone?.

Before he can knock on the door, Hanan opens the door.

"Were you planning to stand here all night?". Hanan said rolling her eyes

"Wait, wait. Which personality is this one?". He asked teasing watching her face turn red in anger

"Close to the one that will kill you". She said angrily

"You already are. By the way, I brought your bag". He said forwarding it to her, "Did you put stones in it?".

"Yeah, a couple of them to throw at people who annoy me". She replied closing the door on his face

He was taken aback by how fast that went while he was literally sweating and thinking for a good minute. He shakes his head with a smile as he turns to take steps away.

"Thank you". She heard her soft voice say from behind and before he can say anything, she closed the door again

She walks downstairs after changing into a simpler dress with Hanan to find everyone seated and waiting for them. She walks and his eyes follow her every step which made her breathing hitched. He smiles forwarding his hand to her and she takes it sitting down beside him.

"We ordered Pizza". Zain said, "I hope that's fine".

"I love Pizza. Is there a cheese flavour?". Hanan said excitedly

Zain smiles at her excitement nodding which made her beam at him for the first time and he went into thinking as to which personality is she in.

"I don't think she will eat Pizza". His sister said looking at Mahak

"Kyun?. Ap ko unho nae personally bataya tha?". Hanan said rolling her eyes (why?. Did she told you that personally)

"She is a model. They don't eat-". His sister started

"I eat whatever I like". She said cutting her off

His sister rolls her eyes leaning back into the couch.

"Don't you have parents that you can stay with instead of here?". His sister asked and her breathing hitched

She turns to look at Hanan who lost the colour of her face and she holds her hand to stop her from hyperventilating.

"They are no more". She snapped angrily, "Keep your insensitivity to yourself because I have had enough of it".

She held onto Hanan's hand tighter watching everyone eyes widen at her mentioning their dead parents.

"Here I thought they must have abandoned you two". His sister said

"That's it. I will kill her". Hanan said leaping forward but Mahak quickly holds her hand stopping her

"Hanan, go to the backyard". Mahak said stern, "Now".

Hanan looks at her sister and sighs walking out of the house in an angry stride.

"Don't tempt me to become someone I don't want to be in the first place. There are a few things that I don't take lightly. My family is number one on that list. I swear if you published about Hanan or my parents the consequences will not be good". She said angrily walking away

He stays in shock as to what had happened in a few minutes. He was looking forward to a quiet night and it seems that is not possible.

"You are really low for speaking like that". Zain said not even caring if it's his friend sister, "You should have been more empathy since your own parents are no in this world. Yet this is how you behave".

Zain chose to walk out to the front side since he wants to relax and get the order from the delivery man.

"I repeatedly told you to mind your tongue. Don't you know that our Lord had asked us to be mindful of others?. Is this what our parents taught us?". Shayaan paused, "Go to your room, you are no longer welcome here".

With that, he left to get to his wife.

Zain walks to the front side standing looking at the moon. His thoughts were complicated because he knows what's it's like to not have parents. Even if some parents are worse there is a need for parents. Good one teaches us how to handle life while the other type teaches us what life really is. His parents went away when he was 8 so he knows the pain one carries in their heart and the need to hide it.

He heard a soft sound from a little to his side of someone crying. He frowns turning and taking a step to the side of the house and the sight only added to his heart pain.

He finds Hanan crying to herself and the way she tries to not make a sound breaks his heart. It is truly the worse feeling one can have to want to hide their pain to not burden another person. We need to start building empathy within us so the people stop being hurt all alone. Sure, everyone talks about empathy, mental health and whatnot but no one is actually changing themselves neither working on it. They just talk. All empty words.

"You know you can cry if you want". Zain said softly standing at a distance from her

She sniffed wiping her tears away, "People mocks pain"

"Not all". He commented, "Some understand and other care".

"You believe that?". She asked looking at him with her eyes filling with tears, "You truly think people will actually understand other people?".

"Especially those who went through the same phase. It is hard for a human to understand another without them going through that pain. They can imagine and that is empathy but only to a short extent. The one who went through it themselves is far better, sometimes". He said smiling, "I went through it so know that I care and I understand".

For the second time that night, Zain was stunned and amazed by what a small bright smile under the moon and her beautiful grey scarf wrapped around her could do so much to his heart.

"So which personality is this?". He asked chuckling

She groaned, "Can you stop it?"

"No, it's fun". Zain said laughing at her annoyed face

Then he heard his phone ringing so he went to get the delivery.

Shayaan stands beside her while she looks at the moon emotionless or perhaps she feels plenty of emotion but choose to not showcase them.

"My parents died when I was 10 and Hanan was just 8. We were coming back from Hanan's birthday celebration when someone attacked our car. A huge truck went straight to our car and the car rolled over. Then someone came and shoot down each of us. Fortunately, I was hit on the shoulder while Hanan was hit on her back. They thought we all died but we both lived". She said still not showing any of her emotions remembering how she had to build herself strong at the age of 10, "Our Aunt took us in. However, soon after we moved into her house she started showing what she truly was. She started abusing us and since we were never exposed to such violence we were scared and unsure what to do. I always used to hide or made Hanan run to the rooftop so she doesn't get hurt. She was too young to be hurt. Once I turned 13 I decided that we had to run away from her house and we ended in an orphanage instead".

He wraps his hands around her bringing her closer, "You have done your best, Mahak. You have done everything you can and possibly no other person can ever do".

She smiles at her words because she never truly heard such kind words from anyone. Everyone who ever did say any good words was because they wanted something from her and the world she works in, was all in for fake.

"Thank you". She said softly

"We should head in everyone is waiting. And I need you to eat so I can look at your wound later". He said pulling back, "Did you eat your medicine?".

She smiles sheepishly at him, "I don't like medicine. Can I not have them, please?".

He felt his voice dying down when she blinks at him looking at him hopefully.

"Good acting but there is no escape". He said shaking his head starting to leave

"Please, please, please...". She continues to whine until they were back in the lounge

After she made sure Hanan is good in her room she starts to move to her room and she has to agree, she was never this nervous and excited at the same time ever in her life. Although she wishes for her shyness to vanish around him, it seems that he is the only one who brings that side of hers. She never felt this way not even with Mustafa.

That made her mood went down.

She feels the exhaustion and the slight pain that her hand is having right now catching onto her. She opens the door and immediately she was brought in and the door closed behind her making her breathing hitched.

"I thought you might not come". He said leaning on the wall beside her

"Why wouldn't I?". She asked confused

He shakes his head, "Doesn't matter. Here is your medicine".

She looks at his hand in distaste then at him pleading not to have her take them when he shakes his head, she huffed taking the medicine and gulping them down.

"Let me see your wound now". He said holding her hand bringing her to the bed, "Can I?".

She nodded as he pulls her sleeves up to look at the bandage that needed to be changed. He went to get the first aid kit and starts to remove her previous bandage, when the stitches come in his view. He cringed because he was responsible for this pain of her he never truly intended to give her.

"I have had worse, Shayaan. This is nothing". She said softly

His eyes turn darkened at her words, "Well, you shouldn't have to begin with. But I am sorry for not taking care of your properly. I promise I will do a better job".

"I am holding onto that". She said smiling

He nodded changing the bandage and he went to throw it while going to the washroom to clean his hand. When he enters back inside she was fast asleep and a smile gazes his lips when he remembers the last time he had seen her asleep. She actually does look like an angel while she is sleeping and he walks towards the bed making her comfortable and covering her while taking the other side of the bed.

And he stayed wide awake.

It was hard enough to look at all of her endearing moments and to have her so close to him wants him to do something yet his mind was battling with his heart.

His heart wins.

He pulls her gently in his arms and he didn't even have to do anything as she snuggles more into his touch and he smiles finally closing his eyes.

The next morning she heard her phone ringing and she opens her eyes to find no one in the room. Her phone rings again and she answers it as her manager told her that today is her press conference and she needed to be there in about two hours. She hurriedly changes into her usual clothes because the clothes for the press conference will be given by her manager.

She went down looking for Hanan since she wasn't in her room but she already went somewhere. She sighs when she finds his sister and her husband deciding it's best to leave. She turns around when she heard his sister.

"You might think I will accept you as my brother's bride but I will never do that". His sister said angrily

She turns around smirking, "I don't think your consent matters anymore. We are married and he wants me in his life. I don't see how your rejection makes a difference".

With that, she went towards the car that her manager sent and then she was off to her press conference.

"I don't see a reason to wear this dress". She said rejecting the awful dress completely

"You need to follow the trend and this is an important event. You need to look more bold and confident which can be done with this dress". Her manager said handing it to her to change into

She closes her eyes hearing the media people and once her name was announced she opens her eyes yet again forgetting all the wrong entering the venue.

She briefly explained the event excluding the information about her wedding and simply describing the rest of it.

"So, what did you do in the village?". A reporter asked

"As I said before, I was unconscious almost the whole time because of my wound". She said calmly

After multiple questions that she answered comes a question she dreaded the most.

"Did something happen between you and the police officer?".

And that is the filthy media of today's.
