2. The Fire Has Gone Out
Something isn't right... the young Illuminatus thought, as she looked around, there was blood everywhere, and it was eerily quiet. As she continued to explore the volcano she felt a weight land on her, she struggled to get up as the dragon on her gleamed, their scales a beautiful shade of red.
"Argento?" the dragon said, backing up and getting off.
"Rosso?" Argento responded excitedly.
"Don't be so excited." Rosso said "The Mimicus are still around... hunting." her normal gleam in her eyes was no longer there. The fire in her heart had gone out. "We can't win, everyone else is... gone"
"Rosso, listen, a voice came to me, we have to gather certain dragons to stand a chance." Argento spoke quickly. "We can win!"
Rosso shook her head "yeah no we cannot. But I will come with you, not to help you but to protect you."
"Oh come on Rosso we can win! It's a prophecy!" The excited Argento spoke. "Look I can quote it! The scales of glimmering red, the blood shining upon them. The scales of shining blue, the water dripping down them. The scales of emerald green, hiding in the leaves. The scales of elegant silver, in plain sight. The scales of gleaming gold, deep in the dark. The scales as black as night. On the enemy side. The scales of pure light, hidden in the sky, the scales of color, hidden deep in the desert. Together they come, together they come as one. And the day they do the war is won."
"That's strange... I had the exact same words come to me in a dream." Rosso admitted, now deep in thought as to what they could mean. "Scales of red... maybe one of my species?"
"I bet it's you Rosso, you're the only one of your kind with such red scales! Come onnnnn!" Argento grinned, her long scraggly teeth showing.
"Argento we can't be sure so I do not want to riiIIIISK-" Rosso interrupted, having been grabbed by the tail.
"Nonsense! You are coming with me!" Argento spoke around the tail in her mouth. She took off flying.
"You cant just- you little rat!" Rosso cried out.
"Of course I can!" She called as she flew. Noticing Rosso started flapping her wings she let go. Excited Rosso is flying on her own now.
"Just because you are my best friend doesn't mean you get to drag me places- ESPECIALLY by my tail!" Rosso complained, rolling her eyes at her friend's antics.
"That's what I'm good at." Argento jokes, flying next to her friend. Her large navy blue wings flapped as she stayed by her friend's side. After a long flight, they returned. Back to the redwood tree Argento had made a nest under to rest in. Her and Rosso worked together to build Rosso a nest, and they used the time to catch up, neither of them having seen each other in a few months, maybe even a year, they couldn't remember how long it had been.
"So Rosso, how have you been? It truly has been a minute since I have seen you."
"Outside of the rest of my kind pretty much being dead? Great." Rosso responded sarcastically.
"No need for sarcasm, I was just trying to be polite." Argento replied. A scowl on her scaled face. The two continued to bicker just like that. Finally, after a short hunting session. They both retired for the night.
The next morning Argento was the first one awake. She looked over at the sleeping form in her friend as she thought of the words from the second part of the prophecy. "Relite the fire in hear heart." How on earth was she going to do that? She asked herself. The more she thought about it the more the plan started to form in her head. She got up, stretching, her long Navy colored tail flicking at the end. She walked over to the tree, jumping up it, and glanced around. She spotted a Draconis Mimicus not too far away, and the gears began to churn in her head. Like the idiot she was, she decided to lure it over.
As the claws raked across Argento's back, she cried out in pain, in turn waking Rosso up. Rosso leapt onto the Draconis Mimicus, and using her massive size she managed to pin the dragon. She bared her long scraggly teeth. The glare she gave the dragon could cause any normal dragon a heart attack. But clearly this one wasn't normal, because it kept thrashing, trying to dig its claws into anything it could make contact with. But her touch scales were near impossible to penetrate, she grabbed the dragon by the neck, shaking it angrily, until a sickening SNAP was heard... and the attacker went still. Rosso dropped the body, panting, blood coating her teeth and face. And glanced at Argento... who had a... excited? Look on her face.
"What did you do..." Rosso asked in an accusatory tone.
"What I had to do." Argento responded. "See, if you can kill them we do stand a chance!"
"What do you mean by that?" The flame of excitement relit in Rosso's eyes, as she realized they do indeed have a chance. She jumped up and down with excitement before finally settling down.
Argento quoted the prophecy. "The scales of glimmering red, the blood shining upon them. The scales of amethyst, hidden deep underground. Together they come, together they come as one. And the day they do the war is won."
Rosso spoke. "How are we going to get the blue scales if neither of us can hold our breath that long?"
"I guess we will figure that out when the time comes." Argento responded, licking her wounds on her hind.
With a newfound hope, Rosso and Argento prepared to leave for the lake the dragons they were looking for were. They traveled and their friendship blossomed, but with that, arguments occurred naturally.
