Chapter Twenty Three

"So, how did you guys escape the first time?" I asked after Klaus and Veronica locked the doors of the library before we continued on our way towards the wall. "We found a weak spot in the wall and found a tunnel big enough for us to swim through behind it," Violet answered. I know that I should've been upset that they had put a hole in the wall, but on the other hand, there was no other way out of the city without going through the main gates that were heavily guarded.

When we had approached the wall, Veronica, Klaus and Duncan removed rocks from a large pile against the wall, and I saw the tunnel that they were talking about. "Okay, just one question, how are we going to fit the trident through here?" I asked, worried that if we weren't careful, we could damage it badly. "I just held the trident close to me and swam through the tunnel," Veronica answered.

Even though that seemed like a good idea, I was still worried that I was going to damage to one thing that could save Delphine and help her and her friends get home. I let out a small sigh, and I silently asked Veronica if I could have the trident, and she handed it to me. I looked back at the tunnel and let out a slow, shaking breath, and prayed to Poseidon that I would not damage it. I carefully swam through the tunnel, taking Veronica's advice by holding the trident close to my body until I was out of the tunnel.

When I looked back at the trident, I couldn't find a single scratch. A breath of relief escaped my lips, and I watched as the others met me on the other side of the wall. Once everyone came out of the tunnel, we began to swim towards the border. "Arthuas, do you think we'll be able to find Delphine?" Veronica asked, swimming towards me. "I hope so. I'm worried about her," I sighed.

We swam for about an hour, and then we took a break to find some food, and it wasn't as easy as it looked. Every time I tried to grab a small fish that was swimming around, it swam away before I had the chance to grab it. I was beginning to grow frustrated, and I was hoping that a small fish would swim right in front of me so I could grab it and eat it. "Here, take this," Veronica said, handing me a small fish she had caught in her hands.

I wasn't sure if she wanted me to have it. "Are you sure?" I asked. She nodded slightly, and very quickly and carefully I grabbed the fish from her and ate every last piece of it. "I assume you've never caught fish before, your highness?" Veronica asked. "No, because the cook usually kills them before I eat the food. And, please, call me Arthuas," I answered. Veronica smiled, and after the others ate their food, we continued our journey through the endless underwater desert.

"We're approaching the border!" Quigley said as he continued to look at the map. When I looked up, I could see that we were indeed approaching a tall rock wall. "From the looks of it, it's a long way to the top," Klaus sighed. I looked over at the group, and without hesitation, I swam backward and started swimming towards the top of the wall. Very quickly, my energy began to wane, and I felt like I wasn't going to make it to the top.

No, stay positive. Delphine needs you, her friends need you. I kept swimming upwards, and I heard those words repeat themselves over and over again. I was in shock when I saw that I had made it to the top of the wall. It wasn't as high as I thought it was going to be, but it was still high nonetheless. I carefully peeked over the wall, and I could see a few sirens were swimming on the other side, and I started to hear some of them vocalizing. Quickly, I covered my ears so I wouldn't be hypnotized, and I swam down to the others.

"How high is it, Arthuas?" Violet asked once I made it back to them. "It's high, but it's not as high we thought it was going to be," I answered. The others seemed a little hesitant to swim up to the top of the wall, but we knew that it was the only way. "Wait, before we swim up, we need to find something that can cover our ears so we won't be hypnotized," I said. I looked around the barren land, then I saw a small pile of seaweed, and I swam over and grabbed a few small pieces that were big enough to fit into our ears.

"Just roll these up and put them in," I instructed the others. "But how will we be able to hear each other?" Isadora asked. The others nodded in agreement, and I explained to them that we would keep them in while we're swimming towards the castle, and once we were inside, we could take them out unless we heard sirens voices.

They all seemed to understand what we were about to do, and we swam to the top of the wall, I felt my energy begin to wane once again, but I kept telling myself the same message I had heard before. Finally, the eight of us made it to the top of the wall.
