Chapter Twenty Four
We quickly swam down to the other side of the border and hid in some nearby seabushes. I poked my head out slightly, and I could see a few sirens were swimming around in circles holding each other's hands. They looked like they were about ten to twelve years old, which made them even more dangerous. The younger the sirens were, the less they had control of their abilities, which made it easier for people to get hurt.
Violet and Duncan were hiding behind the large seabush with me, and I could tell that they were worried about us getting caught, I looked over to one side of the bush, and I saw a nearby home that was made out of gray stone and, small sea lamps hung all around it. "Come on, there is a better place to hide," I whispered to them. They nodded slightly, and when the nearby sirens weren't looking, we swam towards the back of the house.
Once we were behind the house, I looked back at the seabushes where the rest of the group was. Klaus and Veronica were hiding behind one bush, with Sunny, Isadora, and Quigley hiding behind another. Klaus looked over at me, and I poked my head out slightly so I could see what the sirens were doing. To my surprise, they weren't there anymore. Maybe they headed back to their home. I motioned for the others to come to us, and they complied and quickly swam towards us without hesitation.
"Okay, Quigley, where is the castle?" I whispered, gently tapping him on the should to get his attention. He quickly unrolled the map, and his finger quickly skimmed it until it landed on a large image on the aged paper. "This is it, Queen Esme's castle should be north of here," Quigley said, pointing in front of him. I looked in the direction he was pointing in, and I saw that he was right. The castle was a few miles away from our hiding spot. And from the looks of it, it looked slightly bigger than the castle back home.
"Come with me, keep an eye out for sirens," I whispered as we carefully swam behind the small houses. I had heard very few stories about what goes on in the siren kingdom, but from the brief looks of it, the people were just like those in Atlantis besides the fact that they lure people to their deaths. Slowly but surely, we were getting closer and closer to Queen Esme's castle. As we were about to sneak behind another one of the houses, I felt Veronica grab my hand and pull me back towards her.
"What?" I whispered. She put a finger to her lips, and I could see the shadow of a siren come into view, and we stayed very still so we wouldn't alert it. After about a minute, the shadow disappeared from view, and we all let out quiet sighs of relief. Violet carefully poked her head out and silently told us that it was okay to go. After we snuck behind a few more houses, we made it to the stone wall that was surrounding the castle.
"It's not too high up, we can swim up and over it," I whispered to the others. They nodded in agreement, and we quickly swam over the wall, still keeping an eye out for any sirens or any of Queen Esme's guards. We couldn't swim through the front door of the castle. That would be suicide. We had to find a different way to get in. "Alright, we need to find another way in. Does anyone have any ideas?" I asked.
"We could try to find a window and sneak in that way," Duncan suggested. I liked that idea, and very carefully, we swam through the small garden of plants that were surrounding the castle. I looked over at one of the small nearby towers, and I could see that there was a window that was big enough for us to swim through. "Up there," I whispered. The eight of us swam up to the window, and when I poked my head inside, the coast was clear. I let the others know, and we quickly got inside before we got caught by some of the guards.
It was difficult to navigate our way through the castle because of its large size and it's unusual hallways that led to different rooms in the castle. Finally, after some time, we made it to a large stairwell that had two different sets of stairs that led to different directions. "This passage has to lead to the dungeon," I said, pointing to the right stairwell. "Well, I think the dungeon might be this way," Klaus shook his head as he pointed to the stairwell on the left.
Klaus and I were quietly bickering about which direction we should go in, and before things could get ugly, Veronica stepped in between us, preventing us from fighting. "Cut it out! I'm already stressed out enough as it is, I do not want to get captured, so I would suggest you to stop fighting before someone hears us!" she hissed.
We lifted our hands up in defeat and swam backward slightly. "Okay, now we need to decide which way we should go. There are eight of us, so the only logical thing we can do is split up and go down the stairwells," Veronica explained. That's not a bad idea. "That's a good idea. We should split up. Who wants to come with me?" I asked. Veronica swam forward, along with Quigley and Sunny.
"Sunny, I think it would be best if you come with me," Violet said, taking her sister's hand as she swam towards me. "I'll be fine," Sunny protested. I had a feeling that Violet didn't trust me, so I told her that I promised that I was going to take care of her. And I promised that she would not get hurt. "Okay, fine. I have your word, Arthuas. Not a single scratch," Violet sighed, giving me a look of seriousness.
"Okay, we'll meet each other back here once we check the stairwell, and we'll let you know if we find the dungeon," Isadora said. We nodded in agreement, but before we went down the stairwell, Klaus called Veronica's name, and she turned around to look at him. "I have a feeling that something is going to go wrong," Klaus said as he gently took her hand in his. "I don't think anything is going to go wrong, I'll see you soon," she reassured. She planted a soft kiss on his lips before we carefully swam down the stairwell, hoping to find Delphine and rescue her.
