Chapter Six
For the rest of the day, I couldn't stop thinking about what my Aunt Kit and Uncle Dewey would think once they found out I was gone. What am I going to tell them in the letter? They'll probably go searching throughout town to find me. I hope they understand why I left. At sunset, I was lying down on my bed staring up at the ceiling, just waiting for time to pass.
I couldn't think about a single thing to write into the letter. Every time I lifted my pencil, my mind would go blank. I heard footsteps approaching my door, and in a haste, I quickly put the notebook to the side, and I tried to act like I was about to go to bed. The door slowly opened, revealing Aunt Kit, and she still had that cold glare spread across her face. "Are you going to keep giving me the silent treatment just because of the argument last night? If you're trying to guilt-trip me into apologizing, it's not going to work," I sighed, looking away from her.
"What did Veronica need your help with?" She said, finally breaking the silent treatment. "She was just having issues with her father and needed someone to talk to," I lied. Even though we were now on speaking terms, I was still angry with her for claiming that Veronica was a bad influence on me. "I also wanted to apologize. I didn't mean to hurt you by saying that Veronica is a bad influence. I was acting out of anger, and I didn't mean to say that,"
I looked at her, and I could tell by the look in her eyes she had a small amount of remorse, not enough to convince me to forgive her, but enough for me to know that her apology was genuine. "It hurt when you said that, but I hope in time, I can forgive you," I sighed. She nodded understandingly, and she left the room, closing the door behind her. I don't know how, but after briefly talking to Aunt Kit, it gave my brain the words I wanted to write down on the letter. Once I was sure Aunt Kit's footsteps had receded down the hall, I grabbed the notebook and pen and began to write my letter.
Dear Aunt Kit, Uncle Dewey, and Baby Beatrice,
If you have found this letter, it means that I have run away,
I can't say too much about my decision, but all I can tell you is that I have to find out who I really am.
Please don't come looking for me. I know what I'm doing, and I promise you, I will stay safe, and I will be back soon.
Love always,
Delphine
I waited for another hour to make sure everyone was asleep, and I changed into a t-shirt and shorts and placed the letter on my bed. I took one last look at my bedroom, knowing that the next time, things would be different. I quietly opened my bedroom door and crept down the hall past Uncle Dewey and Aunt Kit's room and to the front door. "Goodbye," I whispered before I carefully opened the door and stepped outside.
I kept occasionally glancing back at the house as I made my way to the beach until the house was out of view. When I reached the water, I could see a few of my friends were already in the water. From what I could see under the moonlight, some of them were Veronica, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny.
"Delphine, glad you made it! Come on in!" I could hear Violet softly shout to me. I carefully stepped into the water, waiting for the transformation to take place, and once I fully entered the water, I could feel my legs turning into my tail. My shirt was replaced with a beautiful pink swim top. "We're just waiting for the Quagmires to show up," Klaus said.
Sunny swam over to me, and I could see a flick of her tail. It was a beautiful orange and yellow tail, and I was curious to know what color the other's tails were. "That's a beautiful tail, Sunny," I smiled. "Thank you," she whispered. Violet cleared her throat, and that quickly got my attention. "What does your tail look like?" she asked. I turned onto my side and lifted my fin, and I could tell from the smiles on Klaus, Veronica, and Violet's faces, they thought it was pretty cool.
I could see they had lifted their fins too. Violet had a beautiful dark purple tail, Veronica's tail, was purple and green, and Klaus's was light green. "Your tail's are cool!" I smiled. "Thanks, I'm still trying to get used to the fact I have one of these instead of legs," Klaus chuckled softly. I quickly glanced over at the shore, and I could see three figures come into view, and I could tell that it was Duncan, Isadora, and Quigley.
"Hey guys, come on in, the water's fine!" I smiled. When they got into the water, they immediately grew large tails. Isadora's tail was red and orange, Quigley's was a dark green, and Duncan's was a light gray. "So, what do we do now?" Isadora asked. Everyone was looking at me, waiting for me to answer.
"We swim out into the ocean, and we keep an eye out for Atlantis," I answered. Everyone nodded in agreement, and we dove below the waves, beginning our quest to find Atlantis and the Trident.
