Chapter Five
When we arrived at the beach, I could see the Baudelaire's and the Quagmire's sitting in a small circle in the sand. When we got closer to them, all eyes fell upon me, and I could see that they were not happy. "What the hell did you do?" Isadora growled, standing up. "I don't know what you are talking about," I said. Isadora moved swiftly through the sand towards me, her face growing red with rage.
"Don't act so innocent! I know that you're the one who turned us into mermaids? You did it just so you could get back at us for saying that mermaids don't exist," She claimed, getting close to my face. Before I could say anything, Veronica stepped in between us, becoming a physical barrier to keep us from getting into a merfight. "Calm down, Isadora! I know you're upset, but don't put the blame on Delphine," Veronica said firmly.
Isadora scoffed and sat down next to her brothers. "So this morning, all of you found out you were mermaids by doing simple tasks with water?" I asked. Everyone in the circle nodded, and they explained how their transformation occurred. Violet was doing the dishes, and she accidentally spilled water on herself. Duncan and Klaus were getting glasses of water, and the others were taking baths like Veronica and me.
"I can't live like this! I don't want to live half of my life as a mermaid, in constant fear of someone spilling water on me!" Isadora groaned. Veronica and I looked at each other, knowing that there was only one way to get rid of their mermaid tails, and it was nearly impossible to do that. A few years prior, we found an ancient book in my parent's library that talked about mermaids, and we found out that if a mermaid betrayed their pod, the royals would use the Trident of Poseidon to absorb their powers before killing them with sharp blades made out of whale bones.
"Unfortunately, there's only one solution to that problem," Veronica sighed. Everyone looked over at us, and I could see in their eyes that they desperately wanted to know what it was. Veronica and I looked at each other, and she nodded, silently telling me to explain it to them. "The only way you can become fully human again is by finding the Trident of Poseidon. It can absorb a mermaid's tail and powers," I sighed.
"Well, where is the Trident?" Violet asked. "That's the problem, the Trident has been missing for centuries, but some people claim that the Trident is in the underwater city of Atlantis," Veronica answered. Everyone let out loud groans of frustration, and I saw Isadora, Sunny, and Violet were on the verge of tears. "We should've never gone into the water last night. I'm an idiot for even suggesting it!" Klaus sighed, looking out into the ocean.
"Klaus, it's not your fault. We didn't know we would actually turn into mermaids," Violet scooted towards her brother and gently patted his back. Isadora scoffed loudly, and we looked over at her, wondering what she had to say this time. "Don't go coddling him!" she screamed, throwing a handful of sand towards the water.
"Shut up, Isadora," Violet muttered. The look on Isadora's face said it all, she was completely pissed off, and if looks could kill, Violet would be dead within seconds. "Don't tell me to shut up, Violet! You're defending someone responsible for us becoming those disgusting things!" she shouted, pointing at Klaus. Everyone started arguing, taking sides against one another. The only sane people were Veronica and me. I was beginning to get exhausted with all this bickering. Honestly, I did not expect them to be acting like this.
"STOP! ALL OF YOU!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. They stopped the fighting, and everyone looked over at me with eyes as wide as saucers. Never in my life had I yelled at someone like that, and I was a little scared of what they were going to say after that outburst. "We need to come up with a plan to find the trident, but we will never come up with one if you guys keep arguing like this," Veronica said calmly.
"She's right. Let's calm down and think of a plan," I said in a soft but shrill tone. Once everyone had calmed down, we came up with a plan. The waters were occupied during the day by fishermen and tourists, so we knew it would be a risk. Finally, we all agreed that we were going to sneak out that night.
"But what about our parents? They will flip out once they find out we're gone!" Quigley asked. "We'll leave notes on our beds telling them that we will be gone but that we will come back soon," I answered. Everyone nodded in agreement, and then it was settled.
That night, we were going on a quest to find Poseidon's Trident.
