Chapter 4
The Tables Have Turned
Chapter 4
“Fifteen x?” I guessed and Mr. Jack shook his head.
“Fourteen x?” I guessed again with a lower, squeakier voice and he shook his head again, looking amused.
“Twelve x?” He just shook his head again. When I was thinking of a different answer, he spoke.
“There’s no ‘x’ in the whole equation, Hailey,” he said and the whole class burst out laughing. I blushed and smiled sheepishly.
“Told you I was bad at this,” I said and he chuckle.
He then proceeded to explain this complicated equation that had at least five letters and twenty numbers. Math is numbers not letters!
The bell rang soon and thankfully I didn’t embarrass myself another time.
“Haileyyy,” Chase said, dragging out the y and I gave him a funny look.
“We have sports now,” he said, looking excited.
I groaned. “Do I have to?”
“Yes,” he said nodding “Don’t you like sports?”
“No,” I answered honestly and he gasped dramatically making me roll my eyes.
“I love sports!” he said.
“Good to know,” I muttered and started sulking as we walked out of class with our sports clothes. I followed the rest of the class to the sports hall. Our sports teacher was really young – around 22 – with a lot of muscles.
He told us to change our clothes in the dressing rooms and we complied. I walked with the rest of the girls to the changing rooms and I put on my sweatpants and white T-shirt. I stood in front of the mirror to tie my hair up in a ponytail and gasped.
“This shirt is completely see-through!” I exclaimed, horrified, as my blue bra was showing clearly.
“Chase and Emily didn’t tell you?” Mariah said, smirking at me.
“They must’ve forgotten,” I said and I noticed that all the girls had tank tops underneath the white shirt “Does anyone have an extra top?”
They all shook their heads but they laughed nonetheless.
“I can’t go out like that,” I said embarrassedly.
“Oh the guys are going to love this,” Stephany said amusedly.
I blushed as the girls started pulling me out of the dressing rooms and I protested.
“You can’t stay in there,” Carson pointed out “Coach will come and get you and it would be much more awkward.”
“This is too embarrassing!” I whined and at the same moment as I spoke, everyone decided to shut up. We were already out so all the guys – including Coach Mathew – heard me.
I blushed again and lowered my gaze as all the girls snickered.
“What’s going on?” Coach Mathew asked as he walked up to us.
“Nothing,” Leah giggled and I crossed my arms over my chest, desperately trying to cover my bright blue bra.
“Hailey, right?” He said and I let out a squeaky ‘yes’.
“What’s going on?” he asked me again and I was grateful that Mariah was standing in front of me so that he couldn’t see.
“U-um well… You see… I’m new here a-and…” I trailed off and all the girls started laughing again. The guys were giving me curious looks as they slowly started walking towards us.
“Mmhmm,” Coach Mathew said, crossing his arms over his chest and waiting for me to carry on.
“I-I didn’t know that um the shirt is… A cheap quality,” I said finally and he raised an eyebrow at me.
“Cheap quality?” he echoed and I blushed as I nodded.
“In other words,” Stephany said “Completely see-through.”
Silence filled the hall as Coach Mathew along with all the guys stared at me with blank expressions.
“This is epic,” Paul said before laughing and all the guys joined – including Coach Mathew.
I blushed and glared at Chase who was now doubled over.
“Chase! Stop laughing! You should’ve told me!” I snapped at him.
“S-sorry,” he said between fits of laughter “I guess I forgot.”
I shot him a glare and then I narrowed my eyes at the girls who were laughing too.
“It’s okay Hailey,” Coach Mathew then said but the amused look never left his face “No one will stare.”
He gave the guys a pointed look and the smiled innocently – way too innocently. I nodded uncertainly but seriously I didn’t have a choice.
“Alright start running,” Coach ordered us and blew his whistle. Everyone started running and I followed them, still feeling self-conscious.
After that, we stood in a circle with Kyle in middle. He started stretching and we did as he was doing. A lot of guys stared at my blue bra and I glared at them. Some would quickly look away, embarrassed while other – like Paul – just smirked and winked. I even caught Coach Mathew staring! Well it was a really bright blue and kind of hard to miss but still.
Finally, after what felt like centuries, Coach Mathew blew his whistle and said that we can go change. I was the first one who spun around and ran as fast as I could to the changing rooms. I heard the whole class burst out laughing but I ignored them. I sighed in relief when I put on my skirt and my normal white shirt.
A lot of guys shot me sarcastic comments on our way and I tried to ignore them. The keyword here: tried.
“You know, you didn’t have to change,” Mark, a guy who was even worse than Paul said.
“I didn’t know you were that desperate Mark,” I shot back “It’s almost like you never saw a bra.”
“Ooh,” the whole classed sang as Mark narrowed his eyes at me. I smirked at him and continued walking to class.
I saw Emily in the hallways and ran to her.
“Emily Walker! I am going to kill you,” I yelled and my classmates snickered as she gave me a confused look.
“Why didn’t you tell me that the sports T-shirt is see-through?” I hissed and her eyes widened in realization.
“Oh my God! I’m so sorry, Hailey!” She gasped, putting a hand over her mouth but I could tell that she was trying hard not to laugh.
I narrowed my eyes at her and she snickered.
“You weren’t wearing a white bra by any chance?” She said clearly amused.
I put my hand over my shoulder and showed her the bright blue strap of my bra while giving her a sarcastic smile and she burst out laughing. I grumbled under my breath as she apologized again.
“I have to go! Coach will kill me,” she said.
“Let him tell me if he’s going to kill you. I’ll gladly help,” I called after her and she laughed as she walked to the sports hall.
I went back to my class and an extremely old teacher came into class after me.
I couldn’t stop the giggle that escaped my lips when I saw him. My classmates gave me a knowing look as they laughed at the teacher too.
He only had a bit of white hair at the back of his head while the top of his head was bald. He was really short and his back was arched forward. There was a permanent frown on his face and his huge thick glasses covered most of his face. His mouth kept on opening and closing as if he was chewing his own tongue.
“Good morning,” he said in a raspy old voice.
“Good morning,” we replied, on the verge on bursting out laughing.
We then sat down and he took out the history book and started explaining. He didn’t even notice that I was a new student and he didn’t bother introducing himself. Well, I guess I should’ve known he was a history teacher. He’s old enough to have lived through that entire history book!
“This is our history teacher,” Chase said and I shot him a look to lower his voice but he just waved a dismissive hand “He has bad hearing.”
“Oh,” I answered and that’s when I noticed that he was probably not hearing us.
“His name is Mr. Papadakis,” Chase said and I chocked on nothing but air.
“Mr. What?” I questioned.
“Papadakis,” he said again “He’s Greek.”
I couldn’t stop my laughter now. I laughed and Chase joined me. I was surprised when Mr. Papadakis didn’t hear us.
“How many times a week do we have him?” I asked Chase.
“Only once,” he answered and my smile dropped.
“Oh,” I said, disappointed “I would’ve loved to have him more than once.”
“I know. Me, too,” Chase replied.
“During 1918,” Mr. Papadakis said then suddenly, his voice rose and he yelled “World War I ended.”
I jumped out of my seat and gave him an incredulous look. What the hell? Why did he scream like that? The whole class burst out laughing at him and at my expression.
“His voice raises a few octaves occasionally,” Paul said and I laughed.
“I’m going to love that teacher,” I said, smiling amusedly.
“That’s what we thought at first but then, you’ll just get a headache.” That was the first time Alex said anything while I was involved in the conversation. I was surprised that he talked to me but I was happy that he did.
“You can always fall asleep,” I said, shrugging “I bet he won’t even notice.”
“He always wakes me up when he screams,” Alex replied “You, on the other hand, sleep like a rock so yeah you can do that.”
“I do not,” I said defensively. At least not anymore, I added in my head and he gave me a look of disbelief.
“What about this one time when you fell asleep during Geography class? Mr. Clark yelled at you— right above your head – for five minutes straight and you wouldn’t wake up!”
I blushed at the memory. It was around two or three years ago when I had fallen asleep in class. I was really tired because I didn’t sleep well the previous night.
“And as I recall,” I started, enjoying the conversation and the fact that Alex remembered that “You weren’t so gentle when you woke me up.”
He smiled sheepishly, “Sorry.”
“I had a bruise on my forehead for a week!” I replied, laughing at the memory. Alex back then panicked when he saw that I was going to get in trouble and trust me, Alex does not work well under pressure, so he threw his sharpener at me. A freaking sharpener! I would’ve understood if he threw an eraser but a sharpener? He is one crazy boy.
Alex laughed as well and for a second I felt that we were back to normal. I felt that we were back in our old school, two years ago, just hanging out and laughing. Just being friends.
I smiled at Alex and for a second, he smiled back and I was left breathless.
