Chapter 35
The Tables Have Turned
Chapter 35
Broken.
Hurt.
Angry.
I’ve always thought that those girls on movies are over-dramatic with the whole heartbreak thing. I mean, sure I felt hurt several times before when it comes to Alex but this time it was different. It was just like how those pathetic girls on movies feel.
It was the whole cliché ‘sitting-in-my-room-crying-my-heart-out-and-eating-chocolate’ scene. And you know what? I hated it. I hated every second of it.
He hurt my heart and my pride.
How could he do that to me? Did he really not have any feelings for me? Not at all? I really thought that he at least liked me a bit.
How come he was able to get over the love we shared and I wasn’t able to?
I hated feeling that weak and broken. But what I hated the most was the fact that I lost Alex. I just can’t accept that I lost the guy I really love.
How do you get over a love like that? Is it even possible to get over it?
At that moment it didn’t seem possible.
Oh how I wished my mom was here to help me out. I need her.
After what happened with Alex today, I left school. I just couldn’t stand seeing him and not breaking down. It was worse than the breakup because I actually built all the confidence I needed to tell him how I really felt and his reaction was really unexpected.
I thought it was going to be like those cliché movies where he’ll wrap me in a hug and tell me how much he loves me too and apologize for what has happened.
But life’s not a movie. Life is painful.
Other than the pain, I was feeling angry. Angry at Alex for rejecting me and being so heartless and angry at God for not making my life better.
I pray every day and I know I’m not a bad person so why is my life like that? Why can’t He make it better?
I suddenly cut my chain of thoughts and regretted the anger I was feeling towards God. It wasn’t His fault. No, I’m pretty sure that He’s helping me out more than I am aware of.
Many people have worst lives to deal with. I shouldn’t blame God; I shouldn’t blame Him at all.
I apologized to Him, knowing that He would forgive me because that’s how good He is.
“Hailey?” I heard Chase’s worried voice as he came running into my room.
Surprised, I lifted my gaze to look at him. It was still early for him to be home now. He still had at least one hour of school.
He pulled me into a hug when he saw my crying face and I felt my cheeks flush in embarrassment because he witnessed my crying session.
“What did that jerk do this time?” He asked angrily.
“He… Nothing,” I finally said, lowering my gaze. I wasn’t sure if telling him would cause a bigger problem between the two friends and I didn’t want that.
Chase sighed. “I won’t beat him up, I promise.”
I hesitated but eventually told him what happened. More tears escaped as I told him the previous events and the pain stayed the same.
“That idiot. His pride is going to kill him someday,” Chase muttered, more to himself, leaving me confused.
What does this have to do anything with pride? It was my pride that got hurt, not his.
Before I could ask Chase what he meant, he spoke again.
“I really don’t know what to say, Hailey. I could say that you deserve better and that you should move on but I know how much you love him and how hard it is for you to do that. And I know how much he loves you. That kind of love shouldn’t go away. It can’t go away.”
I snorted and gave him an incredulous look.
“He loves me? Really, Chase? Did you hear what I just told you? Telling me ‘It’s better if we stay friends’ does not mean that he loves me.”
Chase smiled and shook his head as if he understood more than I did.
“Let’s go out and have lunch somewhere,” Chase changed the subject. “I’ll pick up Emily from school and we’ll go.”
A genuine smile took over my lips and Chase smiled back as he texted his sister.
“We’re such rebels,” I joked and Chase chuckled, winking at me.
I took a few minutes to wash my face and try to cover up my puffy eyes. It worked a bit and I looked a bit more presentable as we left the house.
I tried my best to keep my mind off Alex. It was hard, but with the help of the siblings, I managed to do that.
“You guys saved me from Mr. Papadakis,” was the first thing Emily said when she hopped into the car.
I chuckled as the image of that old teacher flashed in my mind.
“What do you girls want to eat today?” Chase asked.
“Pizza!” Emily and I said simultaneously. We hi-fived each other as Chase started driving to the nearest pizza place.
We ended up staying at that pizza place for a couple of hours and Emily and Chase did a good job at keeping my pain away.
On our way back home, I turned on the radio and Maroon 5’s ‘Payphone’ started playing. Chase absolutely hated that song so just to annoy him, Emily and I started singing at the top of our lungs.
“Stop singing or I swear to God, I’ll throw you both out of my car,” Chase said angrily.
Emily and I laughed as we carried on singing.
Suddenly, Chase stepped on the brakes making the car jerk forward. After our shock disappeared we started singing again.
Chase got out of the car, and dragged me and Emily out then he went in and locked all the car doors.
He turned off the radio as Emily and I tried to open the doors while laughing our heads off. We finally gave up and just stood next to the car waiting for Chase to unlock the doors.
My jaw dropped when he sped away and I heard his evil laugh from the end of the street.
Emily and I glanced at each other and burst out laughing.
The house was just a few minutes away from here so we started walking there. Thankfully, it wasn’t raining.
When we arrived, we noticed Chase’s car parked outside. We opened the door very slowly and closed it gently behind us. We then tiptoed up to Chase’s room. Emily stood on the door and I went to my room’s balcony and walked to Chase’s glass door since we had a common balcony. He couldn’t see me because of the curtains in his room, though.
I took out my cell phone and called Emily’s cell phone. She knew that it was our cue. I silently counted to three and then opened the glass door at the same time Emily opened the wooden bedroom door.
The look on his face was priceless.
His eyes widened ridiculously and he jumped up from his bed, where he was seated.
Emily and I attacked him while laughing as we heard him groan in pain.
“Get off!” He wheezed out.
“Never!” I said.
“That’s what you get for leaving us on the street!” Emily said, laughing at her brother.
“I’m sorry! Please have mercy!” He said dramatically and I fell on the floor next to him, laughing.
Emily soon joined me and the three of us just lay there on the floor laughing like a bunch of drunk idiots.
When our laughter died out we just stayed on the floor, staring up at the ceiling.
For the next few minutes it was completely silent. Suddenly, Emily sat up as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown on her.
“I have a date with Josh in two hours and I have no idea what to wear!” She exclaimed as she glanced at her watch. It was now around four thirty in the afternoon. I have a tutoring session with Alex in a bit but I’m not sure he’ll be coming. Actually, I’m pretty sure he won’t.
“Hailey please you have to help me!” She said desperately and I smiled at her.
“Let’s go pick your outfit!” I said as I stood up to follow her out of the room.
She went to her room but I stopped before leaving.
“Chase?” I called out to the brown-haired boy that was getting off the floor now. When he glanced at me, I gave him a genuine small smile. “Thanks.”
He grinned at me and I left the room to help Emily.
Thirty minutes later, Emily had her outfit chosen: Tight blue jeans and a black V-neck with several silver lines going up from the bottom right to the top left of the shirt.
“Thanks, Hailey,” She said gratefully.
“You’re welcome,” I replied. “So where’s he taking you?”
“It’s a surprise,” she said, rolling her eyes.
I chuckled at that. “How cliché.”
“I know, right?” She replied, laughing too.
“Well, you’ll have a great time anyway.”
“I know,” she replied, smiling.
I opened my room’s door a few minutes later and stopped walking when I saw Alex sitting on my bed, his back to me. He turned around to look at me.
“Hi,” I said awkwardly. “I didn’t know you came. I was talking to Emily. Sorry.”
I wasn’t ready to face him. Not now. I needed some space.
The pain of earlier returned full force and I tried my best to keep the tears away.
He shrugged his shoulders like he didn’t care and that’s when I saw him returning the picture of my parents and I to its place on the table next to my bed.
“How did your painting turn out?” He asked nonchalantly and I blinked at him, shocked. Why was he asking about my painting? It seemed like a long time ago even though it was just around one week.
I finished my painting a few days ago and I have to say, it was beautiful.
“Um g-good,” I stammered.
“Show me,” he said, surprising me again.
“No,” I answered sternly. What made him think that I would show him that painting?
“What happened to your parents, Hailey?” He asked, walking closer to me. “Where are they?”
“That’s none of your business, Alex. I know you don’t care so stop acting like you do,” I said and he flinched. What was up with him now? I moved here around three months ago and now he’s asking about my parents? Why the sudden interest?
“They died, right? That’s why you’re here,” he said and I felt a lump in my throat. Why was he doing that? After what he did today, he’s doing this now?
“Shut up,” I said, trying to keep my voice void of emotions.
“You moved in with the Walkers because you don’t have any family members,” he continued, moving closer to me.
“Stop!”
“How did they die, Hailey?” He spoke again. “Car accident? Disease?”
“Please, just stop,” I said, tears blurring my vision. I couldn’t handle any more depressing events. I needed this to stop.
“I won’t stop till you tell me,” he said seriously.
I sat down on my bed and hugged my legs. I felt him staring at me so I hid my face by pressing my forehead against my legs.
I felt the bed dip indicating that Alex sat down on it.
I was breaking down.
“Hailey?” He said quietly, waiting for me to talk.
“They killed them. My dad’s company was bankrupt so he borrowed money from the wrong people. He couldn’t pay them back. One night, a gunshot woke me up and when I was going down the stairs to see what was happening, I saw five guys with guns, my dad dead, and my mom screaming. In the next second, they shot my mom, right in front of my eyes. They heard me scream and were about to shoot me as well but the police sirens stopped them. The neighbors must’ve called the police when they heard the shooting. These guys are in jail now, my parents are dead, and I am here.”
My voice was shaking and all those emotions were making my heart break. My face was still hidden as the tears finally escaped. Why I told him, I had no idea, but I did and I’m not sure if I regret it or not.
I felt my tears soaking my clothes but I didn’t care. Images of that night flashed in my mind. I remembered the guys who shot them. I often saw them in my nightmares. Big, muscular, and evil.
I didn’t notice that I was shaking until Alex wrapped his arms around me. I pushed him away, though. My head was pounding and I didn’t want his pity nor comfort. I wanted to be alone.
“Please leave,” I whispered, not trusting my voice to speak in a higher voice.
“No, I’m not leaving you like this,” he replied.
“Just leave!” I snapped. “I told you what you wanted to know. Now leave!”
“Hailey—” he started.
“Alex, please,” I begged him. He knew me well enough to know that it was time for him to leave now.
He stayed quiet for a while and I felt his gaze on me. What he did next surprised me.
He lifted my head and kissed my cheek. His lips lingered on my cheek and I was too surprised to say or do anything.
After one last look I didn’t quite understand, he exited my room, leaving me alone to cry.
