Chapter 28
The Tables Have Turned
Chapter 28
“She likes me! Can you believe that, Hailey? Mariah likes me!” Chase said with a huge grin on his face. It was 9:00p.m now and he had just returned home. Josh and Alex left around an hour ago.
I smiled at him, feeling excited and happy. “So you’re together now?”
“Yes!” He said, his eyes shining with happiness and love.
I sighed happily. This is just too cute! They are the best couple in the world! Mariah is so lucky to have a person that loves her this much.
“I’m so happy for you Chase,” I told him sincerely.
He smiled and hugged me tightly. “Thank you, Hailey. I would’ve never gotten the courage to tell her if it weren’t for you.”
I chuckled and said, “I told you she likes you back.”
He nodded and grinned. He looked so happy that it made me feel happy too.
He left my room and went to Emily’s room to tell her. He didn’t speak to anyone beside me yet. He came in running like a crazy person till he got to my room and delivered the amazing news.
I heard Emily’s squeals and laughed.
I suddenly got the urge to draw something. All this love and couples is inspiring me. I took out my sketchbook and started drawing. It was like I couldn’t stop drawing. I kept my eyes on the paper for more than an hour without looking up once. When I was done I lifted my head and winced when my neck cracked. I stretched a bit then looked at my drawing.
It was a drawing of green mountains, blue skies, happy birds, beautiful sunshine, waterfalls, and a rainbow. On the bottom left of the paper was a girl and a boy, holding hands. They were facing the nature so I drew their backs. The guy was wearing jeans and a purple T-shirt and the girl was wearing a light yellow dress, with her brown hair flying to the right. The guy’s skin was a shade darker that the girl’s almost white skin. Even with their backs turned to the viewers, it was clear how much they loved each other.
I did the final touches on my drawing and smiled when I looked at it again. Like every other time, I wrote my name at the bottom of the drawing and under it I wrote the date.
I yawned and glanced at my watch. It was 10:30p.m now but I was extremely tired so I decided to sleep. I changed into my pajamas and slid under the covers, into the warmth of my bed.
I woke up the next morning feeling more relaxed than usual. I knew it was because I had a good night sleep. I still wished I didn’t have to wake up that early, though.
“Faster, Hailey,” Chase called out. “Let’s go!”
“Someone is too eager to go to school,” I said, smirking at him. “I wonder why.”
He blushed and muttered, “Shut up.”
I laughed at him as I picked up my bag and followed him and Emily to his car.
I also noticed how he drove a little faster than usual. I didn’t comment on it, though, I just smirked to myself.
We got to school and I had to jog to keep up with him. He was going to break into a sprint any second. Mariah was one of the people who get to class earlier than others because her father drops her off before going to work and he has to be there on time so she comes here early.
There were only a few people in class when we arrived and of course Mariah was one of them. When Chase opened the door, her attention snapped to him and she smiled shyly as her cheeks turned red when she saw who it was.
I suppressed an ‘aww’ at how cute they were. Chase grinned as he set his bag on the floor next to his desk and walked over to her desk.
He leaned down and kissed her lips. I saw the other girls smiling and squealing at the scene in front of them.
“I told you he likes you!” Carson said and Mariah blushed.
“Another couple, I see,” Paul said, smirking at his best friend who smiled proudly.
Behind that smirk, I knew that Paul was slightly jealous. He likes someone too and I’m sure he hadn’t told her yet.
My next mission is to make Paul tell that girl that he likes her.
“You’re next, buddy,” I told him in a low voice so that only he can hear.
“I doubt it,” he said, giving me a small smile.
I narrowed my eyes at him and opened my mouth to argue with him but he cut me off.
“Not now,” he said, giving me a pleading look.
“Fine,” I said, sighing. I will bring it up again, soon.
“So how was the dinner?” He asked, waggling his eyebrows.
“It was amazing,” I said, smiling.
“Did Clarissa and Tom act strict?” He asked excitedly.
“Nope,” I replied and his face fell.
“Why not?” He pouted. “It would’ve been funny.”
I laughed and agreed with him.
Paul then frowned at the door so I spun around but saw nothing there.
“What are you frowning at?” I asked.
“Josh just passed but he went to the other class. Emily’s got him whipped just like you and Mariah got Alex and Chase whipped,” He said.
“And just like that girl you like’s got you whipped,” I said, shooting him a smirk.
He rolled his eyes at me but I saw a faint blush color his cheeks.
“I’m not whipped,” he said and it was my turn to roll my eyes.
“Sure you’re not,” I replied. He narrowed his eyes at me and I smirked.
I continued talking, “So when are you thinking about telling her that you like her? Isn’t all this love motivating you?”
He laughed and shook his head. “I don’t know…”
“Come on, Paul,” I said. “I know you’re not an insecure person.”
“I’m not,” he agreed. “But I’m just waiting for the right time.”
“Cliché,” I muttered and he laughed.
“I know,” he replied. “I used to hear that on movies a lot and thought it was stupid but now it doesn’t seem so stupid anymore.”
I laughed at his observations and we talked for the next few minutes as students started filling the classroom.
I frowned when the bell rang and Alex wasn’t here yet.
“Where’s Alex?” I asked Paul, wondering if he knew anything.
“I don’t know,” he said, shrugging and my frown deepened. I saw him last night so why wasn’t he here now? I was about to text him when Mr. Jack came in so I put my cell phone away, hoping that Alex would come any minute.
The period passed slowly, like every other math period, and when the bell rang Alex was still not here.
‘Where are you? <3’ I texted him just before second period started.
I didn’t have time to wait for his reply because the teacher came in. I was impatient all period because I wanted to see if he replied or not. I kept staring at the watch, silently begging the minutes to pass faster.
When the bell finally rang I took out my cell phone and found a reply from Alex.
‘I’ll be there after third period.’
I frowned at my cell phone. He never sends me such short replies without a smiley or heart. I was worried about him and I thought about calling him but I didn’t have time because the third teacher came in. What was up with teachers coming to class so fast?!
I sighed and put away my phone. I waited again, even more impatiently this time, for the bell to ring. I couldn’t concentrate in class because I kept on thinking about Alex and the reasons behind his absence and weird behavior.
I tried to convince myself that nothing was wrong but I had a feeling telling me otherwise.
When the bell finally rang, the classroom door opened and Alex came in. He made a beeline to his seat, without glancing at me once, even though I was looking at him the whole time.
“Alex,” I called him. “What’s going on?”
He kept his attention on his desk, which was in front of me, for the next thirty second before looking up at me.
“We’re over,” Alex said and all my classmates gasped. They all stopped dead in their tracks. It was break time and everyone was heading out of the classroom but upon hearing Alex’s words they stopped with their eyes wide.
“W-what?” I asked as my heart started breaking.
“Do you have a hearing problem?” He snapped. “I said: we’re over.”
“But Alex—” I started.
He had to be mistaken. This is a misunderstanding.
Why? What happened?
We were fine yesterday! Heck, we were more than fine!
“Shut up, Hailey!” He cut me off. “Did you think I would fall in love with you again?”
Déjà vu…
Then it clicked.
Payback.
Revenge.
That was almost the same conversation we had two years ago except that now, the tables have turned and he was the one breaking my heart.
“No,” I whispered to myself, shaking my head.
Alex would never do that.
He is a good guy.
He loves me.
“Not so fun when you’re on the other end of that conversation, right?” He said his blue eyes as cold as ever as a sardonic smile spread across his lips
Two years ago, I was hurt as well when I did that to him but now, he’s happy while doing this to me. He’s enjoying it.
Yet again, two years ago all the heartless people at my old school were there to watch his humiliation but now, only my classmates – the people I have grown to love – were witnessing this.
I wanted to cry because I knew it would make me feel better but I couldn’t cry. I was too shocked. And maybe in denial?
I swallowed audibly, feeling every single person’s gaze on me.
The silence was suffocating me.
“I’m sorry,” I finally said, my voice low… empty… hurt. “I’m sorry for what I did two years ago.”
I knew that I already apologized a billion times but I was doing it once again because apparently he didn’t forgive me.
“You didn’t deserve it, but I definitely deserved this,” I said, looking into his blue eyes. The eyes that I still loved.
I smiled one last sad, broken smile before turning around to leave. My classmates parted like the Red Sea reminding me of the days at my old school. This time, though, my head wasn’t held up high; on the contrary, my gaze was on my shoes as I walked away from the boy I loved— the boy who broke my heart.
