Chapter 16

The Tables Have Turned

Chapter 16

“Get me out of here,” I said into the phone as soon as Paul picked up.

“Why, Hailey? What’s going on there?” He asked and I swear I could imagine the smirk on his face. It was Saturday afternoon and I was in my room calling Paul because I just couldn’t take it anymore.

“Let me give you an overview of my day,” I started and I heard him snicker as I started the story.

*Earlier that day*

I was sleeping peacefully when I heard their voices.

“Chaseyyy!” A high pitched voice called from the corridor and I groaned as I rolled over in my bed. The clock next to my bed read 7:30a.m so I tried to fall back asleep. I was succeeding as my eyelids closed but it ended all too soon as my bedroom door flew open and hit the wall behind it. I jumped and my eyes opened again as two teenagers came into my room.

“You’re not Emily,” the girl said loudly.

“Who are you?” The boy asked rudely, his voice even louder that the girl’s. I blinked at them, wondering who they were before I remembered that they were the famous cousins.

That’s when I realized that they looked the same. They both had orange hair, blue eyes, freckles, and glasses on. They were both wearing jeans and a red shirt. The only difference was that the girl had longer hair and plucked eyebrows.

“Maybe she’s deaf,” the girl –Olivia—whispered to her brother but because her voice was normally too loud, it sounded like a normal person talking.

Olive looked back at me with a calculating gaze and I sighed as I rubbed my eyes.

“I’m Hailey,” I said and they both jumped in surprise.

“She can speak!” Olive said and I winced at his loud voice.

I gave him a forced smile.

“Emily’s room is to the right,” I said, indirectly kicking them out.

“Don’t you want to meet us?” He asked.

“I—” I started to tell them that I already know who they were but Olivia cut me off.

“Of course she wants to meet us! Everyone wants to meet us!” She said.

“You’re right,” he replied “Everyone knows that we’re the best twins in the world.”

They then did some creepy giggling before turning back to me. I felt like punching them and screaming at them to get the hell out of my room but I couldn’t do that. It would be extremely rude.

“I’m Olive!” He said excitedly.

“I’m Olivia!” She said in the same tone.

“We’re Chase and Emily’s cousins!” They said together then giggled again.

They reminded me of those blond twins with the weird last name on that Disney show. What was its name again? Shake it up? Something like that, I think.

I snapped out of my thoughts and gave them a tight smile.

“Nice to meet you,” I said, shocking myself at how unconvincing my voice sounded. I was even more shocked when they didn’t notice it.

“Nice to meet you, too,” they said in sync and then skipped out of my room. Yes, they were skipping!

Poor Emily, I thought as they went into her room.

I sighed as I got out of bed and went to take a shower before the extremely long day starts.

Fifteen minutes later, I stepped out of the shower and wrapped a white towel around my body. I opened my bathroom door and walked into my room.

I screamed when I saw the twins sitting on my bed.

“What the hell?” I yelled.

Their creepy grins remained plastered on their faces and they didn’t even make a move to leave my room even if I were half naked with only a towel wrapped around my body.

“We’re here to tell you that breakfast is ready,” Olive said.

My eyes widened in disbelief as I stared at him incredulously.

“Are you freakin serious?!” I said “I’m standing in my room half naked and all you care about is telling me that breakfast is ready?! Get out!”

That was the first time of a billion I snapped at them that day.

“Calm down,” Olive said, casually “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. We know how the human body looks like.”

“Oh my God, I can’t believe you just said that!” I said, shocked “Get out!”

“Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” Olivia said as she and Olive walked out of my room. I slammed my door shut, not caring if it was rude or not because I was so pissed off at them now.

I got dressed quickly and went downstairs to the kitchen where the twins, Chase, and Emily were.

The twins were devouring some pancakes as if they have never seen food before. Chase and Emily gave me apologetic look and I just sighed as I sat on the chair as far away as possible from the twins and ate a few pancakes too.

After breakfast, Chase suggested that we watch a movie. I bet he was thinking that it was the only way he wouldn’t really have to interact with his cousins.

Emily chose the movie because according to her, the twins would choose the most horrible movie ever made.

“Look at her dress. It looks like an umbrella,” Olivia said and Olive snickered. I clenched my fists, getting annoyed.

That was the twenty-third comment they made about the movie (yes, I counted) and we’ve been watching for only seven minutes. Most of their comments were irrelevant and annoying.

“I have a shirt that is ten times prettier than the one she’s wearing,” Olivia said after a couple of minutes when a different character was on the T.V and then she took out her cell phone “I have a picture of it here.”

A few seconds later, she gave me her cell phone and I tried my best to not gasp at how ugly that shirt was. There were no words to describe its ugliness.

The first thing I noticed was the cheap quality. It was a T-shirt with no shape whatsoever; just a plain, cliché, T-shirt shape. What was its color, you’re wondering? It was a mixture of pink, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, brown, white, and purple.

It was so horrible, it made my eyes burn.

“So what do you think?” She said and I forced a smile.

“It’s…” I said, trying to find a word. “Colorful.”

I gave myself a mental proud nod at the perfect word I found.

“I know!” She gushed loudly “It brings out my blue eyes!”

I tried to chuckle but it sounded like that: “heh”

Chase snorted and burst out laughing making me laugh too.

“Why are you laughing?” Olive asked, his blue eyes widening curiously as he leaned closer to us but being the idiot he was, he fell off the couch and landed face-first on the floor.

“Olive you idiot!” Olivia said disapprovingly and I put a hand over my mouth the muffle my laughter.

“Sorry,” he said as he rubbed his face and sat back on the couch.

“How about a game of Call of Duty?” Chase said and I nodded excitedly.

“I suck at it but I’d love to watch Hailey kick your ass,” Emily said, making me laugh and Chase just grumbled under his breath.

“What’s Call of Duty?” Olive and Olivia asked at the same time. My eyes widened and I waited for them to say that they were kidding or something but they didn’t.

“I-It’s a video game,” I said, still not believing these two.

“Oh like Super Mario?” Olive said.

“Erm yeah, of course,” I said and caught Emily laughing quietly. Chase didn’t even bother hiding his laughter.

“Oh my God you’re killing him!” Olivia screamed while we were playing. “Why are they so violent?! I prefer Super Mario.”

I took my eyes away from the screen for a few seconds to give her an incredulous look. Was she serious? I can’t believe people like her and Olive exist.

“Can you stop playing that game so we can do something fun?” Olive said after five minutes.

“Yeah, we’re the guests so you should keep us entertained,” Olivia added rudely.

“What so you want to do?” Emily asked giving her a smile faker than Barbie herself.

Olive and Olivia shared a look before their creepy smiles invaded their faces.

“Cooking!” They said together.

“What?” Chase, Emily, and I said at the same time and I snickered at how we sounded like the twins.

“Olivia and I enjoy cooking so we can teach you beginners how to cook. We’ll start with a simple task: Baking a cake,” Olive said and I coughed to hide my laughter.

Was this guy for real?

They went into the kitchen and we followed them with identical amused yet slightly creeped out looks.

Olive put on Clarissa’s pink floral apron while Olivia put on the blue and white plaid one.

I now doubted Olive’s manliness.

“We start with the flour,” Olivia said and for the next ten minutes, they mixed stuff in a red bowl while Chase, Emily, and I watched them.

“I’ll be right back,” Chase said as he left the kitchen. Emily and I had a silent conversation with our eyes about how weird the twins were.

I then took a pill for my headache. I was pretty sure that their naturally loud voices were the reason behind it.

Doesn’t their voice annoy them?

Chase came back a few minutes later when they were putting the mixture in the oven.

“I’m hungry,” he said “Let’s order pizza.”

“Ewww you eat greasy food from restaurants?” Olive said and Olivia wrinkled her nose in disgust.

“Everyone eats pizza,” I said slowly and their eyes widened.

“Pizza is full of fatty stuff,” Olivia replied, shocked.

“But it tastes good,” Emily said, shrugging.

“No, thanks,” Olive said “We’ll just make ourselves a salad while you order you pizza.”

“As you wish,” Chase said as he dialed the pizza place and ordered two pizzas.

All the time while we were having lunch, the twins kept on saying some stupid facts about pizzas and how disgusting we are for eating things like that. I mean seriously who doesn’t eat pizza?!

I finished four slices of pizza and a bottle of orange juice while they talked on and on and on…

Do you know that moment when you feel you can’t take it anymore? You just feel like screaming and running away?

That’s exactly what I felt.

I didn’t scream, though, I just ran away to my room and that is where I am now, talking to Paul.

“Wow they got worse,” Paul said, surprised after I told him a bit about my day with the twins.

“So you’ll come pick me up?” I asked hopefully. I couldn’t wait to leave!

“Of course,” he replied “Chase called me earlier, too. He said that you would probably call soon so I expected your call.”

I laughed at that. “He knew I was trying hard to stop myself from killing his cousins.”

“Wouldn’t blame you if you did,” he said, chuckling. “I’ll be there in five minutes.”

“Thanks. See you soon,” I said as I hung up and went back downstairs to tell Chase and Emily that I was leaving with Paul.

When I told them, they gave me amused looks.

“Looks like Alex lost the bet,” Chase told me, reminding me of the bet the guys made.

“Oh yeah,” I said, smiling.

“I should’ve made a bet, too,” Chase mused and I laughed.

My phone beeped and I read the text from Paul saying that he was outside.

“I’ll see you guys later,” I said as I stood up.

“Where are you going?” Olivia asked.

“Out,” I replied, shrugging.

“With who?” Olive asked.

“A friend,” I replied, getting annoyed.

“Girl or boy?” Olivia asked.

“Boy,” I answered, trying not to snap at them.

“Oooh,” they said together “Hailey’s got a boyfriend! Hailey’s got a boyfriend!”

“Seriously?!” I finally snapped “How old are you? Five?”

They stopped for a second, looking shocked before creepy grins formed on their lips.

“Aww she’s shy!” Olive cooed and I gave him an incredulous look.

“I’m leaving,” I stated, not waiting for an answer as I ran out of the house.

“You are my savior!” I said to Paul when I saw him outside, leaning against his car.

“I know,” he replied, winking. “Do I get a hug for that?”

I grinned and gave him a hug.

“So where do you want to go?” He asked as we got in the car.

“I don’t mind,” I replied, shrugging “You choose.”

“How about we pay a visit to a friend of ours? He owes me ten bucks.”
