Over the next few days Xavier and I spent as much time together as we could. We would just talk and laugh like we had that day at McDonald’s. I still had some doubt about him lingering in the back of my mind but, there really wasn’t anything I could do about them. The only way I would be able to settle it all is if I called off the wedding and that was a no go.
Xavier had taken me to his place the day after our lunch so I could see his Art studio. I wasn’t really into art all that much so he had to explain a lot of it to me. It also didn’t help that he wanted me to draw something for him. Yeah, that didn’t go so well since all I can really draw are stick figures (even they aren’t that great). Even my flowers suck.
I hadn’t seen or talked to my parents at all since my last confrontation with my mother. I hadn’t seen Maria either. I tried to stay away from my house as much as possible during the day. In the mornings my parents would be gone before I woke up and asleep when I got home. They never called to check up on me during those times and it didn’t bother me one bit. I already knew I had messed up parents so their lack of care so to speak wasn’t all that surprising.
“Hey Ree,” Elena exclaimed waltzing into my room with a smile on her face.
“Hey Elly,” I smiled spinning around in my desk chair.
“Is she ready?” Corrie asked looking through her phone while she walked in.
“Ready for what?” I asked tilting my head to the side, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Um, it’s Friday.” Corrie stated
“I know that...” I said slowly.
“We have to meet up with Sharon to get the dresses sorted.” Elena said
“I thought that was tomorrow, on the 6th.” I said
“Today is the 6th, are you and Xavier having so much fun that you’ve gotten you’re days mixed up?” Corrie joked
“Not the kind of fun you’re thinking,” I said flatly. I was still a virgin dammit, I wouldn’t having ‘that’ kind of fun anytime soon, maybe not ever.
“Uh-huh, whatever you say,” Elena sing-songed skipping out of the room.
I just shook my head and followed them out. Once we reached outside I came to the realization that the girls hadn’t come in their own cars and mine wasn’t needed. There was a limo sitting in my drive way. I rolled my eyes at the sight and followed the girls into it. I don’t think I would ever understand why rich people chose limo’s over driving themselves. I was perfectly happy with driving my own car.
Elena and Corrie chatted along during the drive while I preferred to stay quiet, lost in my own thoughts. I didn’t really know where we were supposed to be meeting Sharon, I guess that’s why we were being driven to our destination. As the limo came to a stop it was no use looking out the window to figure out where we were since the windows had black out tints. When the driver opened the door my eyebrows furrowed for the second time that morning. We were at the airport on the private strip.
“Why are we at the airport?” I asked looking over shoulders at the girls.
“Oh, right, I forgot to tell you that we’re flying to New York.” Corrie said with a shrug like it was an everyday thing to just fly off to New York.
“Why are we flying to New York?” I asked stepping out
“Sharon know’s some designers there that you will talking to this weekend.” Elena replied
“Why would I need to talk to designers?” I questioned “We’re supposed to be looking for wedding dresses.”
“Sharon thought you like to have a one of a kind dress that was made for you instead of buying one from a boutique.” she replied
“Oh,” was my brilliant come back.
The thought of designing my own wedding dress was rather appealing. I had always wanted to design (or co-design) my own wedding dress. As we walked up the steps for the jet I remembered that I had no baggage with me. If we were going to be in New York for the weekend I would need clothes. I didn’t even have my wallet with my credit cards with me to buy clothes.
“Um, small problem,” I said turning around to look down at the girls before stepping into the plane. “We have no clothes.”
“Actually we do,” Corrie said
“Yup, since we all have clothes at each others houses Corrie and I packed some things for you.” Elena said
“Don’t worry I have your wallet in my purse if you need it.” Corrie added
“When did...”
“Will you just get a move on,” Corrie urged nudging me into the plane.
“If I didn’t know any better I’d think you’re the one getting married.” I grumbled continuing into the plane and to my seat.
“Well, since I don’t plan on ever getting married I’ve decided to go all out since you are. I’ll take over the whole bridezilla roll for you.” she grinned
“And I’ll be the one to make sure everything goes just the way you want.” Elena added with a grin of her own.
I laughed and shook my head at them. I don’t know how many time’s I’ve thought or said this but, they really were the best friends a girl could ask for. I settled myself into the comforts of the leather seat and stared out the window. Whether I found a dress or a designer today was fine with me. I still had about a month left before I got married and that was more than enough time to get a dress. Well it was enough time for me.
The reality of my thoughts crashed down on me. It was already the beginning of January and my birthday was just around the corner. Sharon and I hadn’t really thought about dates for the wedding. She figured it would be something I’d like to talk to Xavier about. But, according to the legal documents my mother had I only until a week after my 18th birthday to get married. My birthday was on the second of February so by this time next month I would no longer be Mallory Blake. I would be Mrs. Mallory Chase, wife of The Billionaire Heart Breaker Xavier Chase. Holy shit!
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I was fine, everything would be okay. Surprisingly though, the ache I normally felt when thinking about getting married didn’t come. I had finally come to terms with it. Was I happy about it? No, not really but, there really wasn’t anything that could be done. Plus, it was a hell of a lot better than living with my parents.
I used to think that my father would always be on my side when it came to one of my mothers outrageous ideas, but, this time I was wrong. My father had changed, I didn’t even know who he was anymore. He was no longer the man I used to call daddy and that pained me. No matter how much he apologized for this whole situation he was no better than my mother. All of this over money they didn’t need.
I hadn’t known I had fallen asleep until Elena shook me awake to let me know we had landed. It was still quite a bit early in the day when we got to New York since the girls showed up at around 8am back at home. Who knew these girls could get up so early on a day we didn’t have school. A car picked us up and took us to meet up with Sharon for lunch. We pulled up to a restaurant with a name I couldn’t pronounce and were ushered to the table Sharon was at.
“Hello girls,” she smiled sweeping us each into a hug.
“Hi, Sharon.” we all said.
“Have a seat,” she gestured around the table. We did. “Okay, so I have some ideas for dresses for the two of you,” she said to Elena and Corrie. “I would like all of your opinions but, we all know that Mallory here has the last say.”
“Oh no, keep me out of this one,” I laughed “These two can fight over which dresses they should both wear. But, I can guarantee that they wont agree on anything.”
“Okay then,” Sharon chuckled handing the girls a folder with different pictures of dresses in them. “There are also some flower girl dresses in there as well.”
Just like I knew would happen they couldn’t agree on a damn thing. Sharon and I spent most of lunch laughing at how childish Elena and Corrie were being. By the time our little lunch ended the only thing they agreed on was the dress for Maria and I had to agree also. It was a cute little white princess style dress complete with the poofy ball gown skirt that I knew she would love.
While Elena and Corrie continued to duke it out over which dress they should wear Sharon and I met with a bunch of different designers. Since I really had no idea what I really wanted for a dress no matter how hard I tried to think it just wasn’t working. We ended up settling on looking through the designers one-of-a-kind wedding gowns. There were a bunch that were simply stunning but, none of them caught my eye. I didn’t want a dress I just liked. No, I wanted to get a dress that just screamed me and one the I would love. You know ‘The One’.
By the time dinner rolled around I had literally given up hope that I would find a dress. We had talked to every designer that Sharon knew and I hadn’t found a thing. It was really starting to bring my mood down. We stopped at another restaurant and settled in for dinner. Corrie and Elena still hadn’t agreed on a dress and they were starting to drive me crazy with all the bickering they had done today.
“Okay, you girls are driving me nuts,” I whispered yelled, trying hard not to raise my voice while we were in the restaurant. “The only solution I see for this is that you each where a different dress.”
“Are you serious?” Elena asked with wide eyes.
“But, brides maids always wear the same kind of dress.” Corrie added
“Seeing as how I am not having brides maids but, instead two Maid’s of Honor’s - who by the way wear different dresses from brides maids - the two of you get to choose your own separate dresses.” I said
“Well, that makes it so much easier.” Corrie grumbled
“Totally,” Elena agreed
“It figures that, that would be the only thing the two of you have agreed on today aside from the Maria dress.” I mumbled shaking my head.
They each showed me the dresses they would like to wear and handed the folder back to Sharon. She assured me that she could get the dresses made in the colors that I had chosen for the wedding. Since the dresses were all from the same designer back in California it would be ready long before the wedding would take place. I would have to talk to Xavier when we get back about when we should hold the ceremony. Not like we have a lot of time left and we needed to get the invitations out at least by Monday.
Since there wasn’t really anything else for us to do in New York Sharon called to get the jet ready so we could head back home. Once dinner was over we headed back to the airport and headed home. The flight back to Cali seemed like it was dragging. Probably because I couldn’t fall asleep during the flight like I had earlier. My mind was filled with thoughts of my up and coming wedding. I tried to think about other things like the fact that we would be going back to school on Monday. But, not even that worked.
I watched as the darkness began to fade as we flew from the east coast to the west. It was kind of a weird thing to witness. It wasn’t a drastic difference but, still weird. It was around 8pm when we touched down in California so the sun had set while we were still in the air. There were two cars waiting when we got off the jet. One was for the girls since I would be driving back with Sharon to her house to talk to Xavier since he was there with his father.
Xavier was sitting in the den with his father holding a glass of scotch. I greeted them and nodded over my shoulder for Xavier to follow me. I walked through the kitchen and out the back door. I was pacing back and forth in the yard when Xavier came out. He and I hadn’t really talked about anything that had to do with the wedding and I wasn’t sure where to start.
“Did you have a good time in New York?” he asked starting up the conversation.
“It was alright,” I nodded but didn’t stop my pacing.
“Did you find a dress?” he asked
“No, I didn’t.” I replied
“Why are you pacing, it’s making me nervous.” he said raising an eyebrow at me.
“Sorry, it’s just all this wedding stuff is making me crazy.” I sighed stopping and turning to him. “We have a month left before we get married.”
“Yes, I know.” he said
“We need to set a date and according to the documents my mother showed me we only have until the week after I turn 18 to do it.” I said rubbing my temples “So basically we have until the ninth of next month.”
“How about the fourth?” he asked leaning against the railing on the porch. “It’s a Saturday and since you’ll be in school during the week it’s pretty much our only option.”
“You’re right,” I nodded “Well, I’ll go let your mom know so she can get the invitation’s out.”
Sighing I walked past him and back into the house to let Sharon know that we had set a date and we planned to meet up the next day to do another round of wedding dress hunting. After saying my goodbye’s I left the house to call a cab back home. Xavier came out keys in hand while I was making the call.
“I’ll drive you,” he said walking to his car.
“No, I’m already calling for a cab. It’s fine.” I said putting the phone to my ear.
He snatched the phone away and hung up. “Just get in the car Mallory.”
“Okay,” I said rolling me eyes and getting into his car. He was going to have to let me drive it one day.
He drove me straight home and gave me a goodnight kiss on the cheek. I sent him a small smile in return before I got out of his car and walked into the house. I wasn’t at all surprised that no one was home when I got there. It seemed like nothing was surprising me anymore. I didn’t need any more of those for a while anyway, I’ve too many surprises in the last month to last a life time. After a shower and dressing I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
The next day myself, Sharon and the girls were once again on a mission to find a dress. We were walking down Melrose Place in L.A. when I stopped in my tracks. I was standing in front of Monique Lhuillier Salon and I knew this was the place I would find me dress. Without saying a word I walked in. Sharon and the girls were all following behind me. I looked around the shop as Sharon went to talk to someone, probably whoever worked here. After a few minutes of looking around on my own Sharon pulled me aside and introduced me Monique herself.
“Mallory, I would like you to meet Monique. She is the owner of this Salon and also the designer of these beautiful gowns.” Sharon said
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, your designs are amazing.” I smiled shaking her hand
“The pleasure is all mine.” she smiled “So, Sharon here say’s that you are searching for the perfect wedding dress.”
“That would be correct, I’ve lost count of how many I’ve looked at and I haven’t found a single one that jumped out at me. I can’t even help with just designing one.” I sighed
“Well, come with me to the back and let’s see if we can find you a dress.” she said leading the way.
The dresses in the back were even more beautiful then the one’s in the front and that’s saying something since they were all amazing. There wasn’t that many to go through and I really hoped that I found a dress today. I would not leave this shop till I found one. If I had to go through another day of dress shopping I was going to lose my mind. I looked through all the dress in the back, there was only one dress left. Monique opened the garment bag and my jaw dropped.
“This is definitely the dress.” I grinned lightly running my fingers over the fabric.
It really was perfect.
