Chapter Twenty-Two

{moving forwards}

After a long night of hardships, morning swung around rather quickly.

Hoseok lay peacefully on the floor of the van, sleeping bag unzipped as it was draped loosely over Daisy and himself. Daisies hand moved gently around Hoseok's middle, warm and soft and within seconds, her body was moulded to his own, sharing her body heat as easily as she shared her heart.

Daisies long curly hair began to tickle at Hoseok's nose, causing the male to stir in his sleep. Shedding the sleep from his brain, Hoseok allowed the visions of the night to give way to the day, to move from that of which he created to something more fixated and real. In a few short minutes Hoseok's eyes fluttered open, greeting the sunlight to see the colours as bright as the images on cinema screens.

"Good morning." Daisy chuckled, head rising from Hoseok's clothed chest to meet him.

Hoseok smiled as he fully adjusted to the light, loosing himself in Daisies emerald green eyes, "morning." he mumbled, sitting up in place and stretching his tired arms over his head. The sun shone softly through the windows of the van, causing Hoseok's honey like skin to glow all the more golden under its rays. He promptly rose to his feet, ruffling his bed hair in-between his fingers as he walked to the front of the van, checking the time.

Hoseok narrowed his eyes, vision still a little blurry from his sleep, "It's 7am." he yawned, turning back around to face Daisy, who was still slowly climbing out of bed... or the mattress. It didn't really count as a bed, it was simply a roll up thin mattress on the floor with a sleeping bag sprawled over the top. But Hoseok didn't mind, it was all the more comfortable with Daisy by his side.

Daisy quickly rose to her feet, catching Hoseok off guard by slipping her small petite hands into his larger ones. She began to hum a soft tune, a popular love song Hoseok enjoyed dancing to before the virus had broken out. Hoseok found his lips creep into a smile, warm eyes focusing on Daisy through the golden sunrise. She continued to hum her tune, swaying side to side with her partner until Hoseok took her into a bear hug, kissing her forehead. Hoseok swore that Daisy was an expert on keeping his heart beating, without her he was sure it would have stopped a long time ago in this world without hope.

A loud knock against the outside of the van caused Hoseok to unwrap his arms from around Daisy, shuffling to the door as he latched onto the metal handle, swinging it open. A faint breeze flew past him as he lay eyes on the male standing at the door.

"Kim Taehyung?" Hoseok asked, hoping he remembered the name correctly. Now that daylight flooded through camp Beta, he could finally see the scientist up close. Golden hues danced throughout his soft brunette hair, complementing his beautifully tanned skin. He was young, but rather tall, maybe a few centimetres taller then Hoseok himself?

Taehyung's eyes trailed up to meet Hoseok's, "Move aside." he spoke bluntly, placing a hand against Hoseok's shoulder as he lightly shoved the older male aside, stepping into the van.

Hoseok raised a brow in question as the scientist pushed his way inside, "can I help you?" he questioned, a hint of annoyance in his voice as he noticed the startled look on Daisies face.

Taehyung swung his head towards Hoseok before pointing at the city map sprawled across the back of the van, scribbles and notes of different pathways drawn over the complex terrain, "Namjoon explained you're the famous city navigator, correct?" Hoseok simply nod before Taehyung continued, "I need your expertise. We'll need to cross the city, from one end to the other."

Hoseok's eyes widened as he tensed in place, "That's extremely dangerous." he commented, biting down on his lower lip, "I only ever go into the city for supplies, never from one side to the other." he explained, walking towards Taehyung who was now positioned in front of the map.

Hoseok watched as Taehyung placed his finger on the paper, right over a thick red pen line, "But you've already mapped it out, have you not?" Taehyung smirked, smugly crossing his arms across his body. Yoongi had warned Hoseok about Taehyung's persuasiveness.

Hoseok gulped, "For emergency reasons, yes." he spoke, anxiously stepping between Taehyung and the back of the van, shielding the map from his sight, "I don't take orders from you Taehyung. If you wanna do this, bring it up with our squadron leader Jungkook."

"I assure you, Jungkook would agree to this." Taehyung took a step forwards, standing tall as he placed a finger against Hoseok's chest, "and you would too."

Taehyung was younger then Hoseok for sure, but just the way he moved was intimidating. The way his voice trailed deeper then others, and how he looked down upon people as if he was trying to mock a persons insignificance. Yoongi had warned Hoseok about Taehyung, but Hoseok never knew how stern the boy could actually be until he was witnessing it up close.

Hoseok took another step back, colliding with the wall behind him, "What makes you say that?"

Taehyung let out a sigh, "My dad was a leading scientist at the government research facility here in Korea." he spoke before placing a firm hand on Hoseok's chest, moving him aside from the map positioned on the back wall, "He was located just past here, on the outskirts of the city. Also were the virus spread from, the epicentre." he explained.

Eyes trailing to where Taehyung was pointing Hoseok's face lit up, "I know where that is, it's by the old high school, I grew up in that area." Hoseok spoke

Taehyung turned to face him, "Me too, I was in class the day of the outbreak, but I managed to escape to this side of the city, away from the science facility." Taehyung gnawed on the inside of his cheek, running a hand through his hair, "We have to go back to that lab, it could be the difference between saving humanity or loosing to the infected." he stated

Hoseok frowned, "Are you crazy!? That's literally the most dangerous place in all of Korea! We'll be up against, horde after horde!" Hoseok exclaimed.

Taehyung sucked in a deep breath, "I know... but with my fathers notes, a cure can most likely be created." he spoke, "my father- he was so close to one..." his words trailed off as he rose a hand to his face, scrunching his hair between his fingers in frustration.

Drawing closer and closer to the touchy subject, Hoseok decided it was best not to question Taehyung any further. After all, he along with Jungkook and Jimin were practically still kids, forced into the bigger world due to untimely circumstances.

"Hoseok?" Daisy hesitantly spoke from the front of the van, seated snugly in the front passenger seat as she pointed out the front window, "The others are here."

Hoseok moved away from the back of the van shuffling up to the front. Squinting his eyes, Hoseok found it hard to peer out the front window, the sun's rays almost blinding him. There, walking towards the van was Jungkook, Jimin and Yoongi, chuckling lightheartedly amongst themselves as they made there way towards the van.

Hoseok swung himself to the side door, sliding it open for the three males to cram inside. Jimin was first to walk in, greeting Hoseok before seating himself up the front of the van beside Daisy. Yoongi was next to walk in, waving a tired hello as he shuffled over to a pile of boxes, making himself comfortable. Last to walk in was Jungkook, stepping into the van and eyes meeting with Taehyung's.

"Taehyung?" Jungkook spoke, shutting the van door behind him, "What are you doing here?"

Jungkook watched as Taehyung took in a breath, sliding his hands into the pockets of his perfectly white lab coat, "Listen up everyone." Taehyung said, raising his voice so that everyone's attention was directed to him, "I've thought about Jungkook's immunity all night and there's only one explanation for it." he explained, earning a questioning gaze from Jungkook.

"One explanation?" Jungkook mumbled before his eyes widened, "So you know why I'm immune?" he said in surprise.

Keeping his composure, Taehyung nod his head, "Yeah, I think I do."

Jungkook couldn't help but dash towards Taehyung's form, grabbing him by the shoulders. Taehyung was caught off guard, breathing hitching in his throat as Jungkook's face drew closely to his. The younger male's soft breathing filled his senses as Taehyung lost himself in Jungkook's chocolate brown eyes, eyes that were longing for an answer, "What's the reason then!?"

Taehyung opened his mouth to speak, Jungkook's pleading gaze unsettling him before he decided against it. Taehyung regained his composure, placing his hands firmly against Jungkook's chest as he pushed the brunette away, "I don't think it's right to explain just yet... it should wait." Taehyung spoke, turning his head away from Jungkook as the younger male stepped back beside Hoseok, eyes falling to the floor as he sadly nod his head.

"If you're not going to tell us the reasoning behind Jungkook's immunity..." Yoongi piped up, sitting cross legged on a pile of boxes, "Then why are you even making a grand speech out of it?" he spoke, guns sprawled around him as he loaded them with new ammunition. Taehyung rolled his eyes at Yoongi's cocky attitude.

After their confrontation last night, they hadn't spoken a word to each other. After all, their relationship before the outbreak wasn't the brightest. Taehyung was a local gang leader, bringing up rough fights within the area, and Yoongi was a cop. The only one who could deal with Taehyung's uproars. They were like the perfect enemies forced together in a dire situation which forced them both to cooperate.

Stepping aside, Taehyung revealed the maps hung against the back wall. Jimin's eyes widened at the sight, "Woah, these weren't their when we first arrived at camp," he uttered, standing from the front drivers seat and making his way over towards the papers.

Hoseok chuckled, "I've been doing a bit of work... the city is forever changing, building after building crumbling and blocking roads in their paths." he explained, earning a nod of understanding from the blonde haired male.

"Exactly." Taehyung voiced, gesturing towards the map of the city, "I rarely go into the city. Only on expositions to study the multitude of infected that lie there. For anyone with common sense, crossing through the city is basically suicide." Taehyung explained, stressfully running a hand through his hair, "But now that I've finally met Hoseok, I think we have a chance... a chance at crossing the city."

The temporary silence that lingered throughout the van was cut short by the sound of a gun dropping to the floor, the metal clanking against the hard ground. Yoongi sucked in a sharp breath of air, "Y-your joking." he stuttered, choking on his words in the shocking moment.

It seemed Jimin was also at a loss for words, shaking his head in denial, "We'll die... do you even know how hard it is to make it into the city!?" he exclaimed, voice raising higher as his words trailed on.

Seeing the panic in the van, Hoseok stepped forwards, "I think we can do it." Yoongi opened his mouth to protest, but Hoseok was quick to cut him off, "and no Yoongi... I'm not saying this just to reassure you. I mean it."

Deciding to back up Hoseok's words, Jungkook placed a firm hand against the male's shoulder, "I've traveled into the city a couple of times, never passed through.... but with the squad we have here, I think it's definitely possible." he spoke, earning a soft smile from Hoseok.

Daisy was quick to stand from her seat, "We'll be fine... I'm sure of it." she piped up, drawing everyone's attention to her, "We've got the best squad in all of Korea! We've got the apocalypses best scientist and medical expert," she spoke, gesturing towards Taehyung standing confidently in his lab coat, "An incredible close combat expert," she trailed on, gesturing towards Jimin who was absentmindedly twirling a dagger in-between his fingers, "A stubborn shooter who never freaking misses, a squadron leader from one of the top three camps, and Hoseok! The famous city navigator who can guide us with no problems!" she explained, rolling her eyes as she looked at the five men standing stiffly in front of her.

The corner Taehyung's lip curved into a smirk. He had one the fight. "Let me say this once more then." he chuckled, pointing at the map,

"We're all going to the city. And that's final."
