Chapter Twenty-Eight

{time waits for no one}

'Time ticks forward unto inevitable chaos.'

It was a line Jungkook had memorised from one of his favourite anime's back in the day where he had all the time in the world. He never seemed to grasp the real meaning behind it until now, until he felt that time was completely against him.

Hands clenched tightly by his side, Jungkook found himself freezing up at the male's words. The more anxious he became, the more pronounced became his intellectualisation of the whole situation. He rationalised and viewed the problem from different viewpoints. He gambled with countless possibilities in an attempt to force a positive outcome by his sheer brilliance of thought. There was no time to stand around and wait for a miracle, as of that very moment, Hoseok's life was at stake, Jimin's too. It wasn't just Hoseok that needed the antidote, but Jimin needed it too. The blonde haired male was still injecting it daily after his bite from an infected.

Jungkook narrowed his eyes at the two men, stare ridged and cold. All he could feel was the anger boiling up inside of him as he realised that there was nothing he could possibly do in that moment. Drawing in a deep breath his burning stare only continued to grow with the male's next words, "We're bringing our van back here in two hours." the male's cocky smirk returned as he dangled the suitcase over the edge of his finger tips, "be there or your friend is as good as dead." he finished, and the two male's walked away.

Jungkook felt as if he had been brutally cut through with a burning knife, he had never been torn apart before. Never in his life had he faced such a dilemma. It was pointless to stay with the squad if it was just going to lead to the death of two of his members.

"JUNGKOOK, TAE!"

The two said males quickly snapped their attention towards Yoongi's bellowing voice, the blue haired male stumbling towards them, obvious concern plastered across his face as he stood in front of them placing a hand on either one of their shoulders as he lowered his gaze, letting out a sigh of absolute relief, "Thank god you guys are okay." he breathed out.

Ignoring the emotional atmosphere, Taehyung raised a brow, "Since when were we on friendly terms officer Min?" he spat, earning a deadly glare from Yoongi as he silently dropped his arm from Taehyung's shoulder.

"I take that back..." Yoongi spoke, full attention diverting over towards Jungkook as he placed both his hands firmly against Jungkook's tired shoulders, "I'm glad you're okay Kook." he beamed, giving a tight lipped smile.

Taehyung simply rolled his eyes, startling Jungkook by once again snaking a hand around his waist, supporting the male's weight. Breathing hitching in his throat Jungkook felt as if he had melted into Taehyung, like ice-cream on a warm porcelain bowl he felt he belonged next to him as their sides moulded together, walking in perfect harmony. "Let's just head back to the van." Taehyung said bluntly, avoiding eye contact with both males, "We have a lot to discuss."

---------

"WHAT!?" Yoongi screamed, landing a clenched fist against the side of the van in rage after learning that the lives of both Hoseok and Jimin were at stake.

"So that's what's happening..." Namjoon spoke, dejectedly seated in the back of the van, head in his hands as he scrunched his hair in defeat after hearing Taehyung explain the severity of the situation.

What followed was nothing short of painful silence. All Jungkook could hear was the delayed ticking of the clock positioned on the dashboard, and the beating of his pulse against his skin. The noise made him want to beg to god to travel back in time and warn Hoseok of his fate sooner. Jungkook felt beads of sweat beginning to form against the heated skin of his forehead, slowly mixing in with the blood that he was yet to wipe from his wounds. He felt at fault.

Hoseok was wide awake, only suffering a mild concussion from the impact, he was quick to regain consciousness. Now seated against the wall of the van, a hand pressed against his bandaged shoulder, it began to painfully throb underneath his fingertips causing the orange haired male to flinch, "I know the situation is dire..." Hoseok spoke, surprising as much of his nerves as humanly possible, "but we can't just give up here." he finished, biting down on his lip and earning a look of remorse from the eight other people seated in the van.

"I agree..." Jimin spoke up, "if they gave us two options, lets just create a third!" he suggested, lacing as much hope and confidence into his voice as humanly possible, but the slight trembling of his lips weren't going unnoticed by the blue haired male seated closely beside him.

Ears perking up at Jimin's suggestion, Daisy's pleading eyes remained glued on Jimin's form, "A third option!?" she piped up, leaning forwards in her seat, "what do you suggest?" she asked, almost in a rushed manner as she thought of Hoseok's terrifying fate. Daisy was in a state of pure denial, bottled up with so much emotion that everyone was waiting until she finally broke.

Giving Daisy a look of sorrow, Hoseok grunted as he rose to his feet, swaying a little before placing a steady hand against the wall of the van. His breathing felt slow, giving him a feeling of light nausea as he took a few steps forwards, ignoring the pain as he made his way towards his notes glued against the back door of his van. Thankfully it was Taehyung's van that was trashed, not his own.

At Hoseok's sudden movement, everyone seemed to jump up to assist, "Woah, woah, woah." Taehyung sounded, quickly standing to his feet as he placed a hand against Hoseok's chest, "You need to take a seat." he said, gesturing towards a box as he placed a hand against Hoseok's shoulder, lowering him down until he was seated.

Hoseok, too weak to resist rolled his eyes at Taehyung's actions, "Don't be a hypocrite..." he chuckled, smiling through the pain, "take a look at yourself!"

Hoseok was right. Taehyung was in no shape to be standing himself. His hair was still dried with strands of blood, purple beginning to flourish against the side of his bruised cheek and blood still reddening his lips. His science coat had been torn at the sides, and most noticeably the shoulder, red blending into the white material where his shoulder had come into contact with a shard of glass. At the sight, Jungkook raised a hand, wrapping his fingers around Taehyung's wrist and gently tugging the male down by his side.

"As we were discussing." Hoseok spoke up, turning towards the back of the van, "we need a new plan, one that involves retrieving the antidote AND keeping Jungkook."

A pang of nausea erupted in Jungkook's chest.

There it was... his regret had once again returned.

The guilt sat not only on his chest but inside his brain. He could have prevented this in so many ways, he had failed them as squad leader, yet to prove his strength, his wits and his worth, "I'll go." Jungkook spoke up, earning the wary attention of the people seated in the room. Jungkook didn't want protection, he didn't want people going out of their way and putting themselves in danger just so he could survive. Just because he was immune it didn't mean he was any more important then anyone else in the squad.

"Jungkook..." Jimin trailed, facial expression softening at the male's determined stare, "It'll be too dangerous. Let Yoongi and I-"

"No." Jungkook spoke, pushing off his hands as he rose to his feet, standing firmly in position as he eyed down Jimin, "As squadron leader, I command that all of you remain here whilst I settle the situation." he commanded, stomping his way over to the dashboard. Swiping two handguns and a knife from the front of the van, Jungkook turned them on there sides, checking the ammunition before clicking them shut, slipping them into his belt. Snatching his black hoodie from the front seat, Jungkook pulled the material over his head, ruffling his tousled hair before he faced the squad once again, "I've handled worse." he spoke bluntly.

"Kook wait-" Yoongi called, but it was too late. Hands pressed to the back doors, Jungkook didn't even check for infected before he pushed open the back of the van, a flood of cold air sweeping through the interior as the brunette jumped out the back, shutting the door behind him with a thud.

--------

Jungkook felt it was his upmost duty to protect his squad, so wrapping his arms around his shivering form, Jungkook found himself standing in the dead centre of the city buildings located not too far from the accident sight. Letting his tired eyes trail up the sides of the structures, Jungkook felt as if he could be swallowed whole by the overbearing skyscrapers. His vision was still recovering from the freak accident, objects seemingly fluctuating in and out of focus every few minutes as he placed a heavy hand against his pounding head. But there was no time to worry about himself.

Sweeping his hoodie from his head, Jungkook revealed his face to the world, wind entangling itself through his soft brunette hair as he stopped dead in his tracks. Clenching his grazed fists, still covered in dried blood Jungkook called out in hopes of reaching one of the mysterious men he had encountered earlier, "I'm giving myself up," he spoke to no one in particular, raising his arms as a sign of defeat, "You win, you can take me."

After a brief moment of uneasy silence, the sound of shoes against solid concrete were heard, the slight shuffling of derby filling Jungkook's ears as a man emerged from behind an alley, "You're alone?" The man questioned, voice stern.

Jungkook gulped as the man rested a hand over his side, presumably were a gun was positioned, "I'm alone." Jungkook spoke through gritted teeth, "You can hand back the antidote, and take me." he argued, watching as five more men emerged from the shadows of the building, weapons in their grasp as they stared Jungkook down.

One of the taller, more built males did a quick search of the perimeter before confirming that Jungkook was in fact alone. Jungkook couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief knowing that the rest of the squad chose not to follow him.

But that was when Jungkook saw another man emerge from the shadows, a sinister smirk plastered across his face as he threw an apple up and down in his grasp. In the half-light of the morning, the street was eerie. It wasn't that it was a still day; the air simply stopped moving.

"Did you really think we'd hand back the temporary antidote?"

No.

To be entirely honest, Jungkook had watched far too many action movies to know that the criminals almost never followed through with an actual deal, always twisting their arraignments to leave the main character cornered. So to put it simply, Jungkook was ready to go down with an epic fight. That was the entire reason Jungkook had come alone. He knew this would've happened, and to keep them unprovoked, it would be better for Jungkook to make it seem as if everything was going exactly the way they had planned.

The sky was empty, not just of birds, but of clouds also. There was no weather at all; even the sunlight felt cold against Jungkook's skin. From the distance came a series of tinny clangs. It was like the sound of an old can bouncing down the road after a wedding car, but without the engine rumbling or the hiss of tires on wet asphalt. It grew louder and louder, more rushed even. Snapping his head in the direction of the noise, Jungkook's eyes widened when his gaze fell upon three more men, wooden bats dragging along the rubble. The bats weren't any ordinary wooden baseball bats, they had been skilfully equiped with blades and nails. One hit from something as deadly as that and it would be game over.

Turning his attention back towards the so called 'leader' of the group, Jungkook felt a cold chill run down the back of his spine, right down into his bones when he saw the group of men grab for their weapons of choice, some reaching into their pockets whist others reached for the insides of their jackets. Sucking in a sharp breath of air, Jungkook slipped his knife from his side pocket, twirling it between his fingers as it glistened in the sunlight. He held it in a firm ice pick grip, one hand raised in front of him as he slid a foot forwards. His stance showed he was ready for whatever the rebels had to throw his way.

All they saw was a boy with one blade.

The leader leant back against a worn concrete wall and crunched down on his apple. On the flick of his hand three tough guys, each holding a twin pair of knives stepped forwards.

Letting out a puff of his breath, Jungkook's bangs slightly parted from his forehead, giving him a clearer vision of the males stomping towards him, combat boots landing heavily against the concrete below.

It was time to show everyone why they shouldn't mess with Jeon Jungkook.

Skidding a foot backwards against the rocky surface of the road, Jungkook pushed off his back foot, almost flying forwards as he advanced towards the three males. His eyes were solely narrowed on his target, reaction time seemingly heightened as the male on the right swung a hard fist.

Harshly skidding to a stop, Jungkook watched as the males muscular arm passed right across his vision. Before the man could retract his arm, Jungkook wrapped his hands tightly around the male's wrist, tugging on his arm and sending the male flying forwards, crushing the male on the left. Spinning on his feet, Jungkook swept his arm from below, uppercutting the final rebel and sending him straight to the ground. All before the rebel leader could take a second bite of his apple.

Taking a second bite and crunching it slowly, the leader took his back off the wall. Jungkook's face was stony, but his heart was in a beating fit, about to burst from within his chest. He was still weak from the car crash, energy being sucked out of him with every laboured breath he took.

The apple eater stepped forwards, casting away the rare fruit as if he had a hundred others just like them. He extended a hand towards Jungkook, quite unarmed, "Jeon Jungkook." he didn't reply. "This is your final chance, now come with me." he spoke in a stern cold hearted tone. The male was much taller then Jungkook, towering over his tired form as they locked eyes. He dropped his hand and continued, "Fine, have it your way." then he smiled and walked away.

In a flash, Jungkook grunted as his legs suddenly gave out from underneath him, back falling harshly against the edges of the uneven cracked concrete below him. Eyes trailing up to the sky, his gaze fell upon a man looming over him with a devilish grin.

"Looks like we'll take you the hard way." the male smirked, a shadow being cast upon Jungkook's fallen form as the male lifted a baseball bat above his head, ready to swing it at full force.

As the male swung the blade filled bat, Jungkook sucked in a sharp breath, rolling out of the way before one of the blades cut deep into the concrete road. Jungkook was quick to get to his feet, ready to land a punch straight to the man's jaw. But the man beat him to it, bringing his foot to Jungkook's stomach.

A sudden gush of pain jolted through Jungkook's weakened state. His stomach ached, arms lost tension and legs weakened as he almost dropped back to the ground. He felt so close to crumbling, so close to letting himself fall, but he wasn't weak.

Eyes narrowing into a piercing stare, Jungkook was quick to slip his handgun out from underneath his hoodie. The male's eyes widened in complete surprise as Jungkook clicked the gun in his hand, aiming with narrowed eyes and firing. Breaking through the cold air, the bullet punctured straight through the man's right knee, sending him to the ground.

Slipping the other gun from his jumper, Jungkook turned towards the rest of the rebels, a hard stare on his face,

"Bring it."
