Chapter Thirty-Five

{genius crafter}

The squad was full of relief when Yoongi and Jimin showed no signs of serious injury. The most major wound being the blotchy purple finger markings against Jimin's neck, sticking out like a sore thumb every time the male walked past a moonlit window. They had been darn lucky to have escaped unscathed, and now the squad found themselves on high alert as they continued to climb the final flights of stairs to the roof of the leaning tower.

"Yoongi?" Jimin spoke up, voice still horse after being strangled mere minutes ago by a flesh eating monster. Yoongi who was walking just ahead of him paused, turning a little to face the male behind him. Jimin brought a hand to his head, sweeping a few loose strands of his golden hair from his face as his eyes locked with Yoongi's chocolate brown orbs. The moonlight made Yoongi appear all the more ethereal, silvery rays softly illuminating his pale, porcelain like skin. Jimin gulped, "Thanks, for you know- helping me back there."

Yoongi's cherry red lips rose into a soft smile, a rare sight from the rather stern male, "It's not a problem... after all, you helped me too." he commented, referring to when at one stage Jimin had taken on the full forces of the horde whilst Yoongi reloaded.

Jimin gave a soft chuckle, "I'll make sure to improve your close combat skills later."

Yoongi smirked, crossing his arms across his body as he stood knowingly in place, "Same goes for you." he chuckled, "You really need to be taught how to use a gun."

Jimin rolled his eyes, "Yeah, yeah- I know." he replied, walking towards Yoongi and nudging him on the shoulder before they both turned around and continued heading up the stairs.

With each and every level they made there way through, Namjoon couldn't help but let his eyes fall upon the discarded objects. The latest residents of the abandoned apartments were the spiders. Many years had laced the walls with cobwebs of intricate beauty, though now even they lay in dusty rags. It had been four long years since a footstep had echoed within the walls, since the dust had been disturbed and the building awoken. The only furniture laying about were turned over and broken, papers, toys, keepsakes and electronics sprawled over the old floorboards. Namjoon found himself letting out a sad sigh, all of this must've been someone's life, someone's joy and happiness once lay here in this building.

As Namjoon's gaze remained glued on the reminisce of the building, Hoseok stopped in his tracks, turning to the rest of the squad, "Okay guys, we're about five levels from the top of the building." Hoseok mentioned. Daisy who was standing beside the orange haired male cast her eyes absentmindedly out the windows. The building beside them was so close, the inside visible from where she was standing. "Before we head to the top, grab anything useful, the city is unexpected and this may be our last chance to grab anything extra we might need." he explained.

The squad gave a nod of approval before spreading out over the floor, snatching up anything they found of use. Jungkook and Yoongi searched for any left over ammunition, whilst Tessa and Jimin searched the old rundown kitchens for any blades that may be of use. Namjoon on the other hand was searching for more specific items, he had been collecting items the entire way up in order to begin crafting something of great use to the squad. Yes, Namjoon was a tactician, but he was also cleverly skilled in crafting.

Once the floor had been searched, the team found their way back together again, meeting at the next flight of stairs in preparation for the upper levels of the building. Jungkook remembered looking up at the leaning building from his position on the ground. The towers were crossable at the very top, anywhere below was a slight jump away. It was too dangerous to take any chances, so Hoseok had instructed them from the very beginning that they were crossing at the top.

Which was why when they reached the next level, Hoseok was at a loss for words.

"You've gotta be kidding me." Daisy groaned, slapping a hand against her face as she stood beside a dumbfounded Hoseok. Flashlight cast in front of him, Hoseok was aiming the light where the staircase should've been. "There's no more stairs," Daisy spoke, talking in place of Hoseok who couldn't begin to fathom his words, "It's impossible to climb any higher." she explained, pointing a finger at the gaping hole present in the ceiling for the next two levels above them.

After taking a moment to process the situation, Hoseok let out a lace of curses, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration as he turned to face the group, "Sorry guys, but I'm at a loss." he sighed, gnawing the inside of his cheek as he attempted to calm his nerves, "The only way across now is... it's..." Without finishing his sentence, Hoseok lifted a shaky finger, adams apple bobbing in his throat as he pointed out the window, to the building on the other side.

There was a moment of silence, the only sound being the soft whistle of the wind as it channeled itself through the buildings. Jin ended up lowering his bag from his back, shuffling his way over towards the frosted window frame and peering outside, "The distance is jumpable for anyone with a lot of strength or really long legs..." he commented, eyes narrowed as he judged the distance, "By the looks of things, not all of us could make it." he sighed, almost sending the squad into a fit of panic as they realised that they were pretty much stuck.

Tessa ended up tapping her foot against the wood, pondering in place before she snapped her fingers in realisation, "I've got it!" she beamed, a smile spreading its way across her face as she turned towards Jin, "I saw a wooden plank down on the level below, maybe... 5 metres long?"

"Perfect!" Jin spoke in a more hopeful tone then earlier, "It's safer then jumping."

"Woah, woah, woah..." Taehyung interrupted, flailing his arms about as he took a peek out the window, "You're saying... we have to cross over that drop!" he exclaimed, nervous in his actions as he took a single step back from the window.

Jungkook had to stifle back a laugh, slapping a hand over his mouth when he realised Taehyung was in fact scared of something, and that thing being heights. "Come on Tae," Jungkook smiled, making his way over to the male and giving him a pat on the shoulder, "I thought you were tough as nails." A pout formed on Taehyung's lips as he soon realised exactly what Jungkook was saying.

Tessa rolled her eyes at the bickering males, "I'll go down and get it." she spoke, waving everyone off as she quickly hurried back down the stairs, footsteps trailing off into the distance until she was out of sight. Rolling his shoulders and shaking his arm, Taehyung sucked in a breath of air, "Lets just get this over with." he mumbled, taking his metallic suitcase from Jin's hand. Taking the case into both of his hands, Taehyung rose the object, swinging it across his form as he broke the window in front of him. Tiny fragments of glass littered the floor as Taehyung stepped back away from the shattered window.

As if everything had been perfectly timed, Tessa emerged from the staircase, dragging the wooden plank up the creaking stairs. Dropping the wood to the ground, Tessa placed her hands on her knees, puffing as she regained her breath, "Geeze... that's a lot heavier then I thought it'd be" she huffed, standing up straight once again and tucking her loose strands of blonde hair behind her ears as she faced the squad.

Moving away from the window, Jin thanked Tessa, taking the wood into his hands and sliding it over to the window, "It's wide enough for one person to carefully walk across at a time." he stated, examining the wooden plank before looking over at the window across from them. "But there's one slight problem." Sheepishly rubbing a hand against his neck, Jin pointed towards the window frame. "The wood might slide around a lot. There's a lot of glass pieces resting on the edge, it could slip on the fragments." he explained, "Someone will have to jump across and hold the plank whilst another person holds it in place here. That means, the last person will also have to jump across."

At those very words, Taehyung's skin went ashen, heart almost exploding through his ribcage as he realised that he was one of the tallest and most capable people in the room. Both Daisy and Tessa were completely out of the question, they were a lot shorter then the males present and wouldn't have a chance of reaching the window. Hoseok might've had a chance, but after taking an arrow to the shoulder and catching Daisy earlier, he wouldn't be able to save himself if he ended up slipping. Jungkook was in the same boat as Hoseok, having recently overworked himself, Taehyung wasn't going to let the younger male throw himself into even more danger. Letting his eyes trail over to Jimin and Yoongi, Taehyung wasn't going to allow them to jump across either. They had just physically exhausted themselves, not to mention, they were shorter then the other males, making it more difficult for them to jump the long distance.

So that left three people.

Namjoon, Seokjin and Taehyung.

Jin immediately stepped forwards, ruffling his windswept hair, "I'll hold the plank until the end and jump over last. I'm fine under pressure so going last isn't a problem." he shrugged as if jumping across a fifty story building and possibly falling to his death was nothing.

After Jin had announced himself as one of the candidates, Tessa stepped forwards, pointing a thumb over her shoulder at the tall male standing behind her, "Namjoon ain't jumping." she spoke, causing Taehyung to almost have a mini heart attack at her abrupt words, "I'm sorry, but he's the leader of one of the big 3 camps, I ain't loosing him." She stated, earning an eye roll from both Jin and Namjoon alike.

And in that precise moment, everyone turned to face Taehyung. He felt his heart beating in his chest, accelerating with each passing second. He couldn't give up his tough act, not now, not ever. "Fine." Taehyung spoke bluntly, running his grazed hand through his tousled hair as he turned towards the window. The faster he jumped, the better.

Placing his hands against the edge of the window, Taehyung climbed onto the ledge, breathing caught in his throat as he looked down upon the ground hundreds of metres below his feet. The drop felt further down then it actually was, and already he felt the adrenaline coursing unchecked, urging him to do what he felt he couldn't. Sure his muscles were stronger and more awake then they'd ever been, but this wasn't a situation were he felt it could help. All he had was the window, the wind, and a long way down. How could he ever of thought this was a good idea?

"I've got this." Taehyung breathed, closing his eyes as he tried to calm the pounding in his chest. Reopening his eyes, Taehyung narrowed his gaze on the window in front of him. "3" Taehyung sucked in a breath, "2" he bent his knees, "1" and as his heart lurched in his throat, he leapt. His feet flew through the air, arms reaching out in front of him to increase his chances of making it to the window. As his lab coat blew behind him, Taehyung let out a gasp as his foot landed successfully on the window frame, a hand immediately latching tightly onto the edge of the window as one foot hung out in the open. Swinging his body inside, Taehyung almost kissed the ground in relief.

From the other building, Jungkook let out a drastic sigh of relief as he took ahold of the wooden plank at his feet, "Catch!" Jungkook called, lifting the wooden plank before he let it fall to the opposite window frame. Taehyung took a tight hold of the wood, placing it against the window frame before giving a quick thumbs up.

Jin switched with Jungkook, taking the wooden plank into his own tight hold before he gestured for Jungkook to climb across. The younger male gave a quick wave as he confidently jumped up onto the wooden plank. Stomping on it with his foot, Jungkook confirmed it was in fact sturdy before shuffling carefully over the gap, arms stretched on either side of himself as he maintained his balance against the threatening force of the wind. Jungkook let out a huff as he made his way safely over to the other building, throwing his bag from his back before positioning himself by the window, just incase of an emergency.

"Daisy!" Jungkook called from the other side, catching the attention of the said girl, "You climb over next." he called, extending an arm from the window as a form of assistance for when she could reach halfway. Pushing a few strands of loose curls from her face, Daisy placed a hand against her chest, calming herself before she stepped up against the window cill. With one foot placed stably against the plank, Daisy was about to step over the edge before she abruptly paused in her tracks.

It wasn't just her who paused, but the rest of the squad stood frozen in place when a haunting groan filled the air. The sound of cracking bones and the dragging of broken feet over wood caused their hearts to sink into the very pits of their stomach when they realised what was lurking around the corner.

"Runners..." Daisy breathed, attention drawn on the horrifying sounds growing louder on Jin's side of the building.

Not wanting a similar repeat of events from before, Taehyung tapped a hand against the wood, snapping Daisies attention back towards himself and Jungkook, waiting on the other side, "quick, Quick, QUICK!" Taehyung called, ushering Daisy hurriedly over the plank. Realising the severity of the situation, Daisy scurried across the wooden plank, reassured when Jungkook took a hold of her hand, helping her quickly make it across the gap.

Hoseok found himself taking his bow from his shoulder, quickly loading an arrow and pulling back the string. The moans became louder, the dragging of limbs harder to ignore until a runner loomed into view, ravaged and mangled, lower jaw so broken that it's mouth hung open, watering for human flesh. Hoseok narrowed his eyes, "Found you." he smirked, releasing his fingers from the string as an arrow was sent forwards, slicing through the air at an unimaginable speed and striking the corps straight in the head.

But that wasn't the last of them.

Without warning, another runner rounded the corner, followed by another, then another. Yoongi found himself cursing at the sight, images of his recent attack with Jimin clouding his mind and leaving him frozen as of what to do. "Go!" Hoseok spoke, pushing both Jimin and Yoongi over towards the window. "Don't face another horde, we've got you covered." Hoseok reassured them, slipping another sharpened arrow from his back and loading it into the string.

Jimin hesitantly turned away from the fight, jumping up onto the plank and crossing to the other building, closely followed by Yoongi. Tessa on the other hand had thrown herself into battle, fists raised as she uppercut a runner to the jaw, backed up by Hoseok's flying arrows. Tessa found herself in full action mode, roundhouse kicking a zombie in the stomach before it was sent flying into the other two closely behind it.

Swinging his bag from his shoulder, Namjoon took out one of his crafted materials. It was a bottle filled with a number of different ingredients and it was safe to say, it reeked of gasoline. "Throw this if things get desperate." Namjoon spoke, leaving the bottle beside Jin as he climbed onto the window frame, spreading his arms as he crossed safely to the other side.

Short on arrows, Hoseok silently cursed to himself, slinging his bow over his shoulder before dashing over to the window behind him. "Get Tessa out asap!" Hoseok called to Seokjin, taking the case filled with the temporary vaccine into his grasp as he crossed over the wooden plank, letting out a sigh of relief as he made it to the other side.

"Jungkook, take out your gun." Hoseok instructed, gesturing across to the other building, "we need you to hold off a few of the infected while Tessa makes it across." Hoseok explained, earning a nod of understanding from the younger male. Slipping his gun into his hand, Jungkook rose his weapon narrowing his eyes and aiming with absolute precision before pulling the trigger.

Tessa was quick to notice the runners dropping to the floor, bullets piercing through their skulls as she quickly turned on her feet, scurrying over to the window. Tessa was quick to cross, leaving Seokjin completely isolated on the other side.

"Come on Jin!" Jungkook called, "I'm running out of ammo!"

Jin quickly pushed the wooden plank over the edge of the building, leaving no path for the runners to cross. Taking the bottle left by Namjoon into his grasp, Jin stood against the window frame. He could tell Jungkook had run out of ammunition the moment the gunshots silenced and the horde progressed in his direction, "This better work." he mumbled, raising his hand before throwing the object into the crowd of the undead.

Jin found himself covering his eyes as the smashed bottle ignited into a fiery ball of yellow flames, billowing outwards and filling the room with the blast. The noise had reverberated over the buildings, shattering the nearby windows and sending the building into distress. The sounds of cries and moans sounded over the blast as the smell of rotting flesh filled the stagnant air.

Refusing to stay another second, Jin turned to the opposite building, bending his knees before jumping off the ledge with all his might. He was almost there, so close to the edge as his fingers brushed over the opposite window frame. But it just wasn't enough.

Jin let out a gasp, heart leaping from his stomach as his hand slipped away from the window. Squinting his eyes shut, he awaited his death but was instead met by a warm hand wrapping tightly around his forearm.

Slowly opening his eyes, Jin's gaze drifted upwards to the male leaning out the window, holding tightly onto his wrist to prevent him from falling to his death.

Taehyung gave a soft smile,

"gotcha"
