Chapter Sixteen
{Arrival}
Idly sitting by the window sill, Jungkook found himself tracing his finger against the glass. It had begun to rain just before dusk sending the camp into a flurry as people scurried inside. Rain beaded against the broken paintwork of the buildings, bouncing from every hard surface. The hissing sound came from every direction and the storm drains flooded with run off water. For once autumn had come on time.
Transferring his gaze beyond the camp, Jungkook's eyes fell softly upon the distant skyscrapers, the light pink and purple hues of the sunset bouncing off the un-shattered windowpanes. Jungkook could see the clouds in the distance growing darker, he knew a good storm was brewing.
Standing from the window sill, Jungkook swept his hoodie from the back of his chair, pulling the thick cotton material over his head. It would be best to make it to the dinning hall before night fall. He would rather be able to see where he was going in the rain then to stumble around like a blind bat.
Shuffling down the small hallway and downstairs, Jungkook made it to the bottom level of the inn. He was about to exit the building, but quickly decided to let Yoongi and Jimin know he was going to eat.
Raising a hand to the first wooden door, he gave a small knock. He didn't have to wait long before the door creaked open, rusted hinges on the door squeaking a little with the movement.
"Yoongi?" Jungkook spoke as he cocked a brow in surprise, "isn't this Jimin's room?"
Jungkook heard shuffling from inside the room before Jimin appeared behind Yoongi, "It is." he giggled, "Its just that my room has a good view of the west so I called Yoongi in to watch the sunset."
Jungkook's eyes flickered back to Yoongi who raised is hands in denial, "I had no say!" The blue haired male spoke, "Jimin dragged me in here." Yoongi explained.
Jimin glared at Yoongi before turning his attention back to Jungkook, "So what brings you here?"
"I'm gonna go grab dinner, you coming?" Jungkook spoke, gesturing towards the exit of the inn.
Yoongi gave a slight nod, "You go on ahead and get a seat," he said, exiting Jimin's room, "I need to go put on something warmer if we're running through the rain." Jimin agreed with Yoongi's statement also heading back into his room.
Jungkook pushed open the wooden doors of the inn and was engulfed by a cold chill. Not hesitating, he stepped out into the cold rain, smiling as a drop of crystal-clear water appeared against his skin. The rain was something that calmed him, but at the same time excited him.
He pulled the black hood over his saturated form as he began to dash through the pouring rain, small pellets of water spitting on his hands clenched to his hood as his combat boots splashed up the water of the puddles at his feet. Through the sound of the rain a familiar voice called out, gaining his attention. He managed to lift his head just a bit.
"Quick Jungkook!" Tessa called from under the awning of the dinning hall, "You'll catch a cold!"
Jungkook picked up his place, landing his feet undercover as he swept the hood from his face, "Too bad no one saved any umbrellas after the outbreak." Jungkook said, earning a giggle from Tessa.
Tessa began peering through the rain, "Where are the others?"
"Getting dressed, the'll be here soon."
Tessa gave a nod as she gestured for Jungkook to follow her inside the dining hall. Jungkook let out a breath of air as he was engulfed by the warmth of the room, steam rising from the freshly cooked meat on the counter tops.
Tessa smiled, "You're lucky you made it early tonight. It's the one night a month we can have meat!" she spoke, licking her lips as she scurried over to grab a plate.
Jungkook found his mouth beginning to water at the sight. Meat was so rare now a days as livestock was scarce. Even if a camp did have a well working farm, they would never have enough cattle to be able to eat meat nightly, so this was the next best thing.
Jungkook held out his wooden platter towards the server. He was given a warm piece of bread with a slab of melting yellow butter and a thick, hearty slice of grilled steak. Sitting down alongside Tessa, Jungkook felt there was no need for pretentious manners and grabbed the steak, ripping a chunk off with his teeth. He ate rapidly, stuffing his mouth too full.
Tessa watched on in awe, tucking a strand of loose blonde hair behind her ear as she took ahold of her knife and fork, cutting into her meat like a civilised woman, "Slow down Kook, you'll choke before any zombies can get to you." she warned, taking up a piece of steak in her fork and placing it on her tongue. The meat practically melted in her mouth as it rolled around her tongue and slipped down her throat.
Jungkook held his hand up as he swallowed what he had shoved in his mouth, "You'd understand if you had been living at camp Delta for the past four years." Jungkook explained, earning a shocked expression from the blonde sitting next to him.
"Did you not receive meat!?" She questioned, popping another cut of meat into her mouth,
Jungkook shook his head causing a few drops of water from his soaked hair to roll down his face, "We did, but it was VERY rare. Maybe once or twice a year? It's because camp Delta is all about strength and fighting skills. Not so much about farming and technicality." Jungkook finished, chomping down on his bread after he had finished eating the piece of steak in one clean swoop.
"ahhhhh, makes sense then." Tessa sounded, watching Jungkook finish up his meal from the corner of her eyes.
The Dining hall was rather quiet, the only sounds heard being the low chit chat and clanging of silverware against plates, accompanied by the rain pounding against the rusted rooftop above them. Jungkook noticed the dining hall was a lot more organised then camp Delta, but still quite shabby. The tables allowed for small groups to sit together, on each chair was a thin square of foam, likely from old sleeping mats too thin to be of any use. But even if there was a lack of luxury, just being there was a treat. The food was hot, tasty and plentiful. On every face was a smile and the volume began to raise with chatter and laughter.
Jungkook placed his knife and fork on his plate, standing from the table as he took his clean dish back to the front to be washed up by the kitchen staff. He had noticed there was a lot of order in this camp compared to others. Maybe Namjoon was a better leader then he originally thought?
"Jungkook!"
Snapping his head in the direction of the entrance, Jungkook spot Hoseok calling out to him from afar. His orange hair was saturated, drenched to the point where the orange was so dark it looked like a totally different colour. The water dripping periodically from his hair was beginning to soak into his shirt. He had obviously just run through the rain.
Putting his plate away Jungkook quickly jogged over to Hoseok, "What's happening?" Jungkook asked.
Hoseok ruffled his hair in an attempt to shake the water, "Namjoon told me to call you, the scientist guy we've been looking for is about to enter through the gates." Hoseok paused before he continued, "Apparently they're having difficulty and they might need our squad to help."
Jungkook knew where this was heading
Hoseok continued, "We're technically not affiliated with this camp. So as squad leader it's your call whether or not we leave the gates."
Letting out a dejected sigh, Jungkook gave a nod of understanding. It wasn't like they were being forced to leave the security of the gates and help. It was just a possibility. But usually, trouble outside the gate meant something bad, so it was best to be prepared.
"Go grab Jimin and Yoongi... we need everyone to be prepared for a potential excursion." Jungkook spoke, but was cut short when two familiar faces appeared behind Hoseok.
"Yoongi, Jimin." Jungkook spoke, acknowledging their presence.
Yoongi was bent over, hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Jimin was also looking puffed as he wiped the small raindrops that still littered his skin.
"We *huff* we heard the news," Yoongi panted, taking his hands off his knees as he stood tall, "The scientist is out front, but apparently they can't let him in."
Jungkook cocked a brow in question, "Do you know why?" he asked, a cold chill running down his spine as a large gust of wind spiralled its way through the door they were all conversing at.
Yoongi gave a slight nod, "I think. I heard that there was sightings of a horde passing from the north. They don't want to risk opening up the gates when they're about to order everyone inside." Yoongi explained.
"Shit!" Jungkook cursed, raising his hand to his forehead. At this rate is was looking like their squad would most likely be heading out of the walls to assist. And the sooner the better.
Jungkook placed a firm hand on Hoseok's shoulder, "Hoseok, grab your bow, be prepared to loose a few arrows." Jungkook spoke, earning a 'yes sir!' from Hoseok. Jungkook then diverted his gaze to Yoongi and Jimin, "Yoongi, get your hand guns and Jimin, be prepared for close combat with me." The two males nod simultaneously before dashing back out into the rain to collect their gear.
If a horde was passing through the camp, Namjoon as the camp's leader would surely order everyone inside as soon as possible.
Escaping the sight of a horde is rather simple actually. Step one: don't draw attention. This is usually done by moving inside, shutting and blocking windows, turning off lights and not making any sounds. Step two: don't engage. And Step Three: if all fails and you're noticed, don't let them near your infrastructure.
They can tear down walls as easy as ripping open flesh.
Jungkook knew that if that scientist guy... or whoever, was at the gates with a squad van he would have no where to shelter himself from the oncoming wave. At this rate he was a dead man walking. And Jungkook refused to let that happen.
Sweeping his hood over his head once more, Jungkook dashed out into the rain. It wasn't just rain, it was downpour, as heavy as Jungkook had ever seen. The drops struck the ground like heavy bullets from above and Jungkook already knew that he would be getting a cold from this weather. The fact that it was now night wasn't helping either, his vision shortened by the rain and darkness.
Maybe thats how he bumped into someone's shoulder.
Colliding shoulders with someone else, Jungkook was relieved when he turned around to be met by a friendly face, "Namjoon, thank god. I'm heading down to my team, we're getting that scientist." he spoke in a hurry, not wanting to waste his time standing around in the rain.
It appeared as if Namjoon was also in a hurry, just about ready to speed off, "Thanks, I owe you one Jungkook." he smiled, water flooding over his face, "Get out there ASAP. Tessa and I will join you once we've secured the camp." He reassured, giving Jungkook a pat on the shoulder before dashing off into the night.
Jungkook was about to head to the gates, but was stopped once again by Namjoon's voice calling out through the rain,
"BY THE WAY, THE SCIENTIST'S NAME IS KIM TAEHYUNG!" Namjoon called,
Jungkook stopped dead in his tracks, almost chocking on his own saliva as a cold chill ran up his spine, and not from the rain. He just stood there, wide eyes in the middle of the downpour,
And then his senses came flooding back,
"..... WHAT THE FUCK?!"
