Chapter 10

Lily couldn't sleep, her mind was spinning. She felt like she'd failed the old team, the Original Avengers had trusted her to take care of their kids, and to train new heroes. But she hadn't realized how deeply Sarah Rogers was depressed, she should have done something. Sarah couldn't quit, she was Captain America! She held the team together, and Lily had to convince her to stay, to somehow pull her out of her depression. Lily realized  that It had been going on long before Dean had been injured on that mission.

Lily rolled out of bed, and headed to the training room. If she couldn't sleep, at least she could train. But she found that someone else was already in the training room. Sarah Rogers, and she was beating the ever loving crap out of a punching bag. Sarah wasn't wearing any gloves, the skin on her hands was torn and bloodied, but she seemed oblivious. Sarah didn't notice when Lily walked quietly into the training room and sat down on the bench, when Sarah finally knocked the punching bag off it's hook she looked around and saw Lily.

"What are you doing up Ma'am?"

"I couldn't sleep, I thought I'd train."

"Of course, would you like me to leave?"

"No Sarah, let's train together." Doing a midnight training session with Sarah would keep Sarah from beating another punching bag to death.

Sarah nodded, and began wrapping her hands with tape. Lily saw Sarah wince as she taped over her bloodied knuckles.

They began circling each other, Sarah wasn't fighting with her shield. Lily was actually thankful for that, no one on the team could beat Sarah when she had her Dad's shield. Lily threw the first punch, Sarah grabbed Lily's wrist and pulled her forward, and pushing her off the mat. Sarah may have been depressed but she was still an excellent hand to hand combat fighter. In addition to Sarah's skills, it had been a while since Lily had been in the field, so she was a bit rusty.

After 10 minutes Lily gave up. "Wow Sarah, nice work. You've beaten me."

"I didn't hurt you did I Ma'am?"

"No of course not, I'm just dramatic."

Lily left Sarah alone in the training room, after making her promise to go to bed and relax. It broke Lily's heart that she couldn't help Sarah. Lily had helped Steve and Sharon raise their daughter, she'd seen Sarah's first steps. She remembered how determined baby Sarah had been, dragging herself up using anything she could get her hands on. Sarah also had extreme OCD, when she was younger if someone set a mixed bowl om M&M's in front of her, she would take them all out and line them up by color. Lily remembered one night when Steve and Sharon had both been on mission, 12 year old Sarah had spent the night at Lily's house. Lily wasn't much of an organizer, all of her pictures had been crooked, and things had been out of order. By the time Sarah was done, all of the picture frames had been straightened, and everything was lined up perfectly. It was all done by Sarah with robotic precision. Sarah's bunk was always extraordinarily neat, her bed made perfectly, everything lined up. It was a stark contrast to her best friends bunk, Mila's bed was always made, but her possessions were all shoved in drawers, as though Mila didn't have time to put them away.

Lily decided she'd walk out to the small graveyard behind the training center. It was where the Avenger's were buried. The cold night air filled Lily's lungs, reminding her of the time she'd gone to JotunHeim with Thor and Hela. There were 16 graves, each with a name engraved on their headstone. Steve Rogers. Sharon Carter. Bruce Banner. Natasha Romanoff. Vatoni Black. Bucky Barnes. Wanda Maximoff. Vision. Pepper Potts. Tony Stark. Thor Odinson. Jane Foster. Scott Lang. Peter Parker. Sam Wilson. Clint Barton.  All Avengers who'd fallen saving the world, and left their kids to carry on as protectors of earth.

God. The kids were so young, and they had a tremendous responsibility on their shoulders. Heck, Sarah Rogers was only 22 years old, and she was one of the older Avengers! Lily sat down on the soft grass, ignoring the voice inside her head that said she was going to end up with a bug crawling up her pant leg. Lily sat there for hours, lost in thought.
