Chapter Two: The Concert
The Superstar's Autograph
_Chapter Two
I parked my Matte-Black H2 Hummer a little from where the stadium stood. Individuals make 2 specific long lines from the entrance gate. After I locked the transport's door, I looked at my surroundings like a lost pirate on an unknown island. The field in front of the place was full of red-blooded human beings, talking and laughing. Pure happiness is visible on their faces. There are several merch booths, kiosks, untidy tents, sleeping bags laid on the green grassy clearing, and garbage too. These people had been here from daybreak. It feels like they are here in this specific abode to unite and rebel against a powerful being.
"Babe! You made it!" Someone hugged me from my back. I turned to her and her eyes met my brown ones, my girlfriend smiled sweetly. God, I love this girl. She looked so amazing in her sandy curled hair.
"What are you wearing?" I cocked my eyebrows and slowly eyed her very short white dress with only a pink lacy crochet cardigan to keep her warm on the cold winter night. The hem of the dress stops at the upper portion in the middle part of her thigh. I could imagine strangers drooling at her bare legs and fantasizing about it.
Zoey pouted cutely, holding an LED board with 'I LOVE YOU YIBO' on the screen.
"What? It looks good on me, right?" She gave me the board and spun in front of me.
I sighed, "It's too short, babe, and the cleavage." The dress is cut enough to reveal a lot of cleavage. A lot of it.
She circled her hands around my neck and kissed me on the lips. I always liked her taste of dark chocolate and almonds.
"Here, wear my jacket," I said after we pulled away.
"You're so protective!" She looked at me and laughed wholeheartedly.
"Please, baby..."
"Okay~." She nodded as I removed my black leather jacket and helped her wear it leaving my red cable-knit sweater on.
"It's not much but it can hide some of your perfect edges." I kissed her forehead.
She giggled and held my hand. "Let's go to that line."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop right there, lioness." I pulled her against me. "Do we really have to?"
"Xiao Zhan, we're here because we'll be watching Yibo's concert."
I nodded. I figured it all last night that like all the people in this city, I have to go to this place too not because I'm one of those die-hard fans of whoever this idol may be but because my girlfriend wanted me to. I have to be here.
For her sake. For her sake. I have to be here for her sake. I kept chanting these words in my brain.
The only question I want her to answer is why she would want me to be here. To do what exactly? I don't believe I'm here, tagging along for that shallow reason. Watch with her? Really? She knew too well, I don't watch concerts. I really hate it. "Why don't we eat ice cream somewhere and forget about this concert, baby? You like cranberry ice cream with white chips, right?" I gave her a weary look with my best persuasion statement. I'm hungry and I'm tired from uni but because I adore her, I'm here with my soul intact in my body.
"Aww, don't be such a spoilsport babe," she gave me a look worse than mine a second ago. "It's okay if you don't want to watch Yibo, all I need you to do is protect me from the entrance gate until we reach the inside pit of the stadium. All those girls are Yibo's loyal fans, and they'll do everything and anything to see him perform up close. I want you to keep me safe. I don't want to be trampled upon by them. You're tall and have a strong body after all, so it's not difficult for you to shove other people out of your way."
Here we go, the real reason why I'm here.
"I already told you all about this," She pointed out.
"Yeah. I think you did." I lied while crossing my fingers in my free hand. Yeah. I didn't listen to you when you did and that's my biggest mistake.
"Come on, let's go the line." She walked towards a line were being formed by girls to the entrance of the stadium, dragging me.
"The hell of a damned!" I hissed under my breath while squeezing my body into the line. I'm delighted its winter, if this is one of those summer nights then no question, it will be a complete torture, and I would be sticky with no good reason at all. Nonetheless, this was the worst.
I grasped Zoey's waist with both of my hands and protected her from all of the enthusiastic fans.
Can't they pull themselves together?
I turned to my side to a group of girls who were disturbingly pushing me aside from the moment my girlfriend and I arrived in the line. When they recognized me, their mouth hung open.
"Oh god! Xiao Zhan?!"
"Why is he here?"
"Such an eye candy!!" They whispered at each other like I can't hear them, and they gave Zoey a hard look of 'Shit! He's with his girlfriend!' I glared at them and tuned out their conversation mostly about how dare my girlfriend steal me from the world and whatnot. I love my girlfriend.
I did my best to calm down and the girls pushed me like I'm a huge log. We've been here for almost an hour waiting for the stupid door to open and everyone is restless.
After a few minutes of battling the agonizing deathly journey, the door opened, and the wild fan girls started to do whatever they could to settle inside of the stadium's seats but not before the staff checked their tickets and placed a colorful wristband on their wrist. Security personnel also made sure the bags and other stuff they'd brought with them were safe.
There are rules to follow inside the concert dome. No Camera, Video Camera, and Phone Allowed. But I just saw Zoey hide her phone inside the secret pocket of my jacket.
"Wow. You are one of those lucky people to be in the pit. Can I put your wristband for you, sir?" A venue staff informed so I held up my wrist.
"Sure but I wouldn't call it lucky," I said.
She laughed a little and blushed, doing her job, after that, she handed Zoey a box with things inside. It's some kind of freebie, I guess. Someone scanned our tickets and directed us to our general direction. My girlfriend gestured to the part of the place where there were black iron-made barricades that separated the audience from the cool-looking stage. "We're going to stand there the entire time?"
She nodded at me. "Yeah. It's the perfect spot to see Yibo up close."
"Hah." Nonsensical. Hectic and stressful.
"Are you mad at me?" She's trying to read my thoughts.
I smiled, "No. No. Why would I? If it's for you, I'll jump to Gehenna or any misery world."
Her face turned red, "I love you, Xiao Zhan..."
"I love you too babe." I kissed the top of her head.
We slowly walked with strangers in the aisle of the stadium to the pit. It felt like I was playing football with rhinos. There is whining, cursing, more shoving, and pushing from where we are until we safely get through those obstacles of people and stand at the foot of the expanded stage. It has four sections the pit was very large and I could see lots of enthusiastic females around. Overall this site was packed up with myriads of humans.
After the emcees said something I didn't hear, the lights went out. There was a dazzling haze of smoke around the stage with red lights coming somewhere above that shined through the platform, alluring people. Then loud hip-hop or pop or R&B music, I don't know, began to play, I once heard these songs from a radio station, a remix of Finesse by Bruno Mars and Turn up the Music sung by Chris Brown. Eight individuals appeared and someone in the middle caught my eyes as he turned to face the audience. He wore all-black clothes, white shoes, and a black Panama hat. The idol has long legs, a cool aura, an attention-grabbing form, and power moves. He showed his great dancing skills in a Michael Jackson dance routine.
Mesmerizing.
The dude's steps contribute to chills in every bone of a mortal.
Synchronize.
He danced faultlessly with his backup dancers. I mean I don't know anything about dancing but the guy got some swag and hype. And I don't have to prove my point because people of different ages and any genders adore him. All the people here were drugged by his movements. I smiled at the teenage girl who was being carried by her father on his shoulders, she mouthed every line of the song, swaying her little body as the rhythm progressed, her father seemed to know the music too.
High-pitch squeals of the girls rose that can make anyone's blood in their heads rush throughout their ears and leave them dry. I think they took the 'how to scream in front of your idol training', kind of moronic if they did it and every one of them seem to exert more effort doing their make-up today, retouching it, occasionally checking their appearances in their decorated mirrors, put some things girls place on their hair just to feel confidently beautiful and some glimmering substance in their eyelids to look noticeable and went back to screaming rave, waving their lightsticks, banners, and materials I don't know exists in my dark life.
I don't get it. Why waste your time with a person who doesn't know you've existed with a heartbeat or even appreciate what you've done for him?
Girls obsessing is not the right scene for me to see. Apart from my girlfriend, I wish I could say that. She's so entranced with the dancing guy.
I, on the other hand, got headphones on hugging my neck so I put it on my ears and listened to some old calming music, yawning. Speaking of music, I can't relate to any songs the guy above the stage was dancing. Who cares anyway, I got my ears covered and slowly closed my eyes. Drifting into sleep. I can sleep anywhere, in any position, and I can sleep while standing so it's not difficult for me to do it now.
A pat on my arms woke me up. I looked around, there are a lot of crying and 'boos'. I glanced at the girl beside me, who I knew did that pat. I removed my headphones.
"Lisa," I stated to Jia Cheng's stepsister. Of course, she's here in this concert. Here in the exact place where we stood. She won the war between her brother and her yesterday.
"Hi, Xiao Zhan. Before you say whatever to me, talk to your girlfriend first, it looks like she's in shock." She pointed at Zoey who was staring far from me, staring at an empty stage.
"Zoey?" I walked to her and waved my hand in front of her face, no answer.
"It's over babe, want to go home?" No answer.
"Zoey? Babe?" I asked again. No answer.
I touched her arms but she was frozen in her place. "Zoey?" No answer.
"Babe?" I shook her. She blinked at me and I saw her lips tremble and she weep. Bawling like everyone here. I felt a tug of pain in my chest. Lisa was still there, quietly watching us.
"Yi-Yibo-Yibo said he won't sign any autographs tonight," she said between hiccups.
"I thought you knew about that. Yibo is Yibo, that's why we love him right?" Let me correct that, Lisa didn't stay quiet, she decided to talk. "He's unique like that."
I nodded at her and looked at my girlfriend.
"Don't worry, maybe he'll change his mind and do a what do you call it? Fansign? Fan meeting? Either of the two tomorrow before going back to whatever parallel universe he came from." I soothed her.
"He won't do that! He never changes his mind!" She stomped her shoes, still crying her eyes out.
"Yeah. Yeah. You're right, Zoey," Lisa agreed, nodding her head. I ignored her. I thought she was on my side.
"He will believe me. Let's go home and order some cake and ice cream." I feel like I'm someone who was talking to a spoiled kid.
"No. I only want Yibo's autograph."
"What about a new phone? Do you want a Lamborghini? I'll buy it." I asked her. I heard Lisa's rude snicker.
"No!! I want him to sign this!" She brought her hand in front of me and showed me her bra.
"What the fuck?!" Both of our eyes bulged out. Lisa's and mine.
"A br-bra?" I tried to persuade myself that it was the wrong stuff I was seeing.
"Yes." She answered. I looked at her chest area for confirmation. I am right. I didn't know when did it happen but there was no brassiere on her breast now.
So that means she unhooked her bra for this Yibo guy to sign? Right here?! Apparent to anyone?!
What the hell?! Electrifying jealousy burned my heart.
She lowered her head, "I liked him a lot."
"I'm jealous. Your boyfriend's here. In case you forgot about it, Zoey."
"I'm sorry," she mumbled.
I cupped her chin and kissed her cheeks, "I'm just kidding, it's all right with me. You can be anybody's fan but don't change the fact that we'll always be one, okay? You and me."
She nodded. "I love you so much, Xiao Zhan."
"I love you too, baby" I kissed her lips and she returned it.
Lisa's unnecessary cough ruined the atmosphere. "I'm here ya know."
"I'll drive you home, babe. Bye, Lisa," I waved at my best friend's sister.
"Drive me home too, Zhan." She said to me.
"Call your brother." I poked her forehead.
"I won't. I don't need him." She pressed.
"Alright. Come on." The three of us started walking to the exit door and I caught her. My girlfriend glanced at me with eyes asking for sympathy. MORE THAN SYMPATHY.
She stopped and bawled harder. Lisa hushed her. "Zoey, stop crying already. Zhan, do something!"
"What can I do?" I yelled at her.
"Your girlfriends asking you to do something for her! Idiot!" She screamed back.
"Zhan!" Zoey opened the floodgate of emotions.
"I thought you've changed. I thought you loved me. I thought you accepted all of me. I thought you understood me. But I am wrong. I am so wrong! You are always heartless! You don't care! You don't love me or anyone or anything! You pretend to be someone you are not to get me!" Anger was in her voice.
"No, Zoey... I care about you. I loved you for who you are, baby. The only thing that I can't understand, is why are you obsessing with that kind of guy?! That's too nonsensical," I don't know what to think anymore so I said what I truly feel.
"So you think I am a fool?! You don't know Yibo so you can't judge him. He is my inspiration!" Is this what mental breakdowns look like? DAMN IT.
There's a minute of silence between us and it's making my brain uncomfortable. "Baby.."
"Leave me alone." I tried to kiss her but she backed away. "Don't come near me. Go away!"
"No. Don't. If this was all about that autograph, I would get it for you, and from now on, I won't say any bad stuff to that fangirling of yours. I'll support you." I held her hands.
"Prove it." She's being serious about this.
"All right." Shit, I should've never said those words in the first place.
"What if he won't succeed?" Shut up, Lisa!
"Easy. He is not for me. I'll dump him." Like arrows and spears, Zoey's sentences flew to me directly.
"What do you mean?" I asked. I felt like I was being blackmailed.
"You said, you care for me. You loved me for who and what I am. So show me. Respect what I like and do what I want." She spoke under her breath.
WHOOOAAA. SHE'S LOSING HER FUCKING MIND!
"For an autograph? You'll end everything between us? You can't do that." I found this funny but if I dissect her reason, what a logically inconsequent explanation.
Beyond invalid.
"I love you; I do Xiao Zhan but I'm sorry. If you can't do such a simple thing for me then maybe you're not the one and you are just one of those mistakes I made in my life." She confessed.
I sighed, "Complete bullshit."
I don't know how I should take this to my mind, so I stood there, staring at the top of her head for a greater length of time.
Only an autograph...A mere autograph...
"All right", I said out of the blue grabbed the Victoria's Secret laced bra from her hand and traipsed to the door leading to the back of the stadium.
I don't want to change anything, so I made this decision. I love her and it's not easy to let go. I won't lose my girlfriend just because I'm too coldhearted to ask some celebrity for an autograph.
"Zhan, I'll go with you." Zoey ran after me. Maybe her conscience kicked in.
"No. Wait for me in the truck. Lisa, take her there." I told them after I noticed seven bodyguards stationed at the backstage door darting their eyes on us.
When Zoey obeyed and disappeared with Lisa, I approached the man who looked like the doppelganger of Dwayne Johnson in the movie Hercules.
"Good evening." I said with no hint of 'goodness' in my voice.
He gave me a hard look. "What do you want, kid?"
"I want to go to the other side." I point to the door of the backstage.
"Why would I let you?" He asked me with smugness in his voice.
Before I could muster strings of reasons to answer the brute, he averted his sight from me. I turned around to see where his eyes landed. A prepossessing woman in her mid-thirties gracefully waltzed her way to where we are. She has lots of high-end-looking paper bags.
"Good evening, ma'am." The bodyguards chorused as they straightened themselves in the presence of the lady. They continued to talk in the Korean language flawlessly.
"No, it's okay. I understand why he is in a bad mood." She handed them the stuff. "Help me take these gifts to him."
The men nodded and took her things.
"Now what? Open the door. I want to see Yibo," The escorts stared at each other. Debating using their eyes.
"Of course, ma'am," Hercules dude offered. Opening the metal door for her.
"You're not coming?" She asked looking at where I buried my shoes.
I blinked for a while and pointed at myself, "Uh..me?"
She smiled, "You are a fan of Yibo, aren't you?"
"Uh..yes ma'am." I awkwardly rubbed my nape. "I am his fan."
