Chapter 27
They were twenty minutes into their two hour long trip, and everyone was bored out of their mind. Natsu's counting the hairs on his arms, Jellal staring out the window counting the number of blue cars that pass them, Levy pretending she has a book in her hands, Gajeel trying to fall asleep by counting imaginary sheep, Juvia and Gray are still asleep, Erza trying to come up with clever comebacks for Jellal, Lucy staring into space, coming in and out of reality, and Luna staring out the window tapping her fingers on the dashboard.
Cana was swaying to the music until she noticed the radio was going out, "no, no." She hit the radio, attempting to fix it, but only achieved in making it worse.
The radio was dead.
"Great! The one good thing on this trip is now broken." She gripped the steering wheel tighter, "there's nothing to do on this hellish trip."
"It's not that bad Cana." Luna said.
"Are you kidding me?"
"Come on! We don't have to make it boring, we should make the best out of this trip."
"What do you have in mind shortie?"
"Let's get to know each other better."
"Pass." Everyone groaned.
"Come on! That's a good idea." Luna pouted.
Cana sighed, "lets hear her out."
Everyone stared at Cana, confused as to why she would agree to give it a chance. They would have thought she, of all people, would disagree to it.
Lunas face lit up, "ok, so one person will ask a question and we all have to answer."
"I feel like I'm back in kindergarten." Jellal said.
"So who wants to start first?"
"I'll start!" Lucy said, "ok, I'm going to start simple." She cleared her throat, "what's your favorite food?"
"Boring." Gajeel coughed.
"Hey! I said I was starting off simple. Now answer the question."
"Fine." Gajeel said, "I like donuts." He smiled.
"What! I was going to say that." Jellal said.
"You snooze, you lose."
Jellal growled, "Well since metal head over here stole my answer..."
"I didn't steal it, I just said it first."
"No you didn't! I know you looked into my mind and stole just to piss me off!"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Shut up!" Luna said, trying to keep a smile on her face, "continue with the question Jellal."
He pouted, "fine. My second favorite food is rice."
"Such a basic answer for such a basic person." Levy said, shaking her head.
"What!?"
"Alright next person!" Luna yelled.
"Mine is strawberry cake." Erza said with glistening eyes and a bit of drool coming down her chin.
"Close your mouth before you catch flies." Jellal said.
"Maybe I want flies in my mouth, have you ever thought about that?!"
"That's disgusting Erza." He said.
"My favorite food is strawberry milkshakes." Lucy said.
"That's a drink." Natsu said.
"No one asked for your opinion." Lucy said, glaring at him.
"Sorry!"
"What about you Natsu?" Luna asked.
"Chicken!" He said, licking his lips, "I wish I could have some right now." He rubbed his belly.
"Levy?" Luna said.
"I don't have a favorite food." She said, flipping through her imaginary book.
Gajeel leaned toward Lucy, "I think she's finally lost it."
"Yeah, I didn't know she could get this way by not having a book."
A light bulb lit up in Natsu's head. He dug into his pocket and glanced at the book he grabbed from the soldier, "here Lev, you can read this."
The word read sent Levy into a high. She quickly grabbed the book from his hands and rubbed it on her cheek, "Yes! I needed this feeling! A book on my skin."
"She's gone crazy." Natsu said.
She flipped through the book, not having a care in the world.
"Well back to the game." Luna said. She glanced toward Cana, "so what's your favorite food?"
"I think It would have to be chicken noodle soup." She smiled, "it helps get rid of my hangovers."
Luna frowned, "great."
"What's yours Luna?" Erza asked.
"I already told you guys, beef stew. It reminds me of my dad." She smiled.
"That's sweet." Lucy said.
"Next question!" Natsu yelled.
"I think this would be the best time for me to go." Jellal said, "favorite thing to do."
"Ooh! I'll do this one." Lucy said, "I like to write."
"Really? Have you written any stories?" Natsu asked.
"One, but I don't think it's all that good."
"I doubt that." He said, "What's it about?"
"Well that's the thing... I don't know."
"How do you not know what your own story is about?" Gajeel said.
"I don't know, I got lost in the plot and it went from a girl going out into the city and finding happiness to aliens invading earth and stealing all our unicorns."
"Wow." Natsu said, adjusting his glasses, "that's... random?"
She sighed, "yeah I know, it's all over the place."
"What about you Gajeel?" Luna said.
"I like playing the guitar."
Luna shivered, "Oh yeah, I forgot about that."
"I still play in the future? Cool." He leaned back.
"And you're horrible." Luna whispered.
"Huh?"
"Oh nothing." Luna said, smiling, "What about you Erza?"
"Well I never really told anyone this but, I do like to bake."
"Oh yeah! I remember eating one of your famous strawberry cakes!" Luna said, rubbing her belly, "they were delicious."
"Whoa, my cakes are famous in the future?"
"No, but everyone who ate them seemed to like them."
"Oh."
"Natsu, what about you?" Lucy said.
"Hmm." He put his hand on his chin, "does studying count?"
"Did this loser just say studying?" Gajeel said.
"Hey! Studying and learning can be fun."
"Natsu... that's just pitiful." Jellal said.
"Fine I'll think of something else." He thought for a moment until a grin stretched across his face, "Well I do love to cook."
"That's nice." Lucy said. "Who taught you how to cook."
"My mom did. Me and my brother, before he died, used to always cook with her. She taught us a new recipe every week. We would even come up with our own, but ever since my brother died I haven't really cooked much. I think that was the first time I cooked in years."
"I'm sorry about your brother." Lucy said.
"It's ok." Natsu said, "even though I'll never get over it, I eventually accepted it."
Lucy smiled. She was amazed at how strong he was. Even though she doesn't know her family that well, she has lost a person close to her.
"And you Cana?" Jellal asked.
"I don't have a favorite thing to do."
"Everyone has a favorite thing to do."
"Well I don't." She took a sip of her drink.
"Alright, party pooper." He said, "What about you Levy?"
Levy was to into the book to even acknowledge Jellal's question, "that book can't be that good that you can't answer my question-"
"Shut up Jellal."
He turned into the corner of the car, in the trunk, drawing circles on the floor, "I just wanted everyone to be apart of the game." He sniffed.
"You didn't have to be mean to him Levy." Natsu said, crossing his arms.
She slammed the book shut and turned around to a now frightened Natsu, "where did you get this book?"
"From one of soldiers in those cars." Natsu squeaked.
She sighed, "Well lucky for us, we now know some of Veena's plan."
