Chapter 25
Natsu climbed inside the car, breathing heavily, "that was... fun."
"You really are an idiot." Gajeel huffed.
"So, no thank you for saving all of our butts?"
"It's not about that Natsu, you could have gotten yourself killed." Erza said.
Natsu sighed, "I'm sorry, is that what you want me to say?"
"Listen you idiot-" Lucy climbed to the back and slapped Natsu, throwing him off guard.
"You're so stupid! You should have been more careful, what would have happened if you didn't make the jump? If Gajeel didn't catch you? Everyone would be sad. I would be sad." Natsu touched his now red cheek while staring at the blonde. She grabbed him, pulling him into a hug, "but, I'm glad you're ok."
He couldn't help but smile at her. Knowing that someone cared about him, touched him. He wrapped his arms around her, "thank you."
A flash blinding both Lucy and Natsu caught their attention. They glanced at a smirking Levy with an evil grin.
"What are you doing?!" Lucy said reaching for the camera.
"You'll thank me later Lucy." She cooed.
Jellal glanced behind him to see that the trucks were slowing down, "Hey they're slowing down."
"Why are they slowing down?" Natsu asked.
"Who cares, as long as they're off our asses." Cana said.
"The exit is just up ahead." Lucy said.
Cana spotted the entrance, "do any of you have any money?"
Everyone gathered everything out of their pockets, "I have twenty." Natsu said.
"Fifteen." Levy said.
"Thirty." Gajeel said.
"Ten." Jellal.
"Twenty." Juvia said.
"Ten." Lucy said.
Erza was struggling to get the rest put of her pockets, "Fifty."
Everyone stared at her, "Why do you have so much money on you?" Levy asked.
"Lunch and for emergencies. You always want to carry around extra cash with you just in case something happens, and in this case something happened."
"Okay I have about eighty." Cana said, taking out her money, "and a hundred in the glove compartment."
"And why do you have so much money?" Gajeel asked.
"I didn't know how long I was going to be away from home."
"So what do you need with the money?"
"For gas and a hotel room."
"Does this mean we're on the run now?" Natsu said grinning, "I always wanted to say on the run.."
"Yes were officially on the run... you nerd." Cana said.
"What kinda hotel can we get with that much money?"
"A crappy motel." Erza said, "the ones filled with germs, roaches, and all kinds of other health hazards." She shivered at the thought.
"Well it's that or we're sleeping in the car." Cana said.
"Whatever." Erza pouted.
"Don't worry about her, she's used to staying in luxury hotels with the fancy soaps." Natsu teased.
"Am not. I've slept in plenty of motels."
"Name one." Jellal said, crossing his arms.
She sighed, "fine, I haven't, but I'm fine sleeping in one just for tonight."
"It may be for a couple of days." Cana said.
Erza's eye twitched, "T-That's fine too."
They pulled onto the main road, "finally." Cana said, "I thought we were going to be in that forest forever."
Lucy stared out the window in amazement, "What? You look like you've never been outside before." Jellal said.
"I've never been out here during the day." She stared at the different buildings and landscapes, "It's beautiful during the day too."
"Wait, you're telling me that you've never been off the campus during the day?" Levy asked.
"Nope, I snuck out for the first time the other day in about ten years."
"You haven't left the campus in over ten years?" Juvia said, worry in her voice.
"Yeah, but I'm glad I met you guys otherwise I wouldn't have been able to experience this."
Everyone stared at other with sorrow and worry filled in their eyes.
"Let's stop here to take a break." Cana said pulling into a gas station.
"Are you sure we're far enough?" Levy asked.
"As long as we make this quick, we'll be fine."
Soldiers were dragging their feet up the trail as they were carrying the injured men.
Men were breaking the metal pipes, wrapping around the soldiers and Veena.
She finally broke free, "finally, it took you idiots long enough." She dusted off her coat. She turned to look at the injured soldiers walking up the hill, anger filling her soul. She walked up to them, "where are they?!" She yelled.
"We're sorry, but they got away."
"They got away? How do you let a bunch of stupid teenagers get away and take out half of your men."
He bowed, "I'm sorry, but there was nothing we could do."
She leaned her head back, trying to calm down. She grabbed the soldiers gun from his belt and shot him in the head.
Point blank.
Everyone stopped and stared at the scene, terrified. She pinched the bridge of her nose, attempting to calm down, "I want every highway blocked, every street corner occupied by an officer! Track thier phones if you have too, I dont care! I want them here now!" She yelled.
They saluted, "Yes mam."
"Pack all the Meta humans in this school up and bring them to my lab." She stepped over the dead body, "and clean this mess up."
"Ok, the cheapest motel I can find is over a hundred miles away from here." Levy said, typing on her phone, "Fifty dollars a night."
Erza gagged, "that sounds like it's going to be dirty."
"A little dirt won't hurt you." Jellal said.
"You may be used to sleeping with roaches, and just being dirty in general, but not me." She crossed her arms.
"Oh really? At least I-"
They both heard Gajeel growling. They slowly turned their heads to him to see him pointing at the, now sleeping peacefully, Luna.
They both bowed their heads, "we're sorry."
Lucy ran from inside the store with a few bags, "ok so all the antibiotics they had in there was ibuprofen." She handed the pill bottle to Juvia, "and I got him a ice pack. See? It has a cute flower on it." She smiled.
"Cute..." Juvia said. She took one of the pills and put it in Grays mouth. He was barley conscious, but he was awake enough too swallow the pill. She gave him some water to swallow it down, "I hope that helps."
He closed his eyes again, falling back into deep slumber.
Cana came back into the car, "What are you guys doing?" She asked.
"Looking for a motel."
Cana shook her head, "no, no, no, they can use our phones to track us." She grabbed Levys phone and slammed it on ground smashing it into pieces.
"M-My phone." Levy whispered.
"In fact, everyone's phone out now." Everyone pulled out their cellphones and gave it to Cana, "even you princess." She stared at Erza.
"Absolutely not, this phone is a one of a kind and it costs over four thousand dollars."
"Well I'm sure your rich daddy can buy you a new one." She grabbed the phone from her and stepped on it, making pieces fly everywhere, "Damn rich kids." She whispered.
Jellal couldn't help let out a little giggle as he saw her disappointed, horrified face.
She slid back in seat, "how am I supposed to call my dad now?"
"There's this thing called a payphone." Jellal said.
Erza bit into her bag, trying to restrain from kicking his face in.
Groans could be heard from Luna as she was starting to wake up from her endless slumber, "you're finally awake." Cana said, taking a sip of her drink.
"What happened? I remember being in the bathroom and you were there telling me..." the memories hit her like a train. She grabbed her head, "no, no, no, no!"
Cana grabbed her hands, "It's ok Luna, I'm right here."
"Are they still coming after us?"
"Yes, but not right now. We lost them."
Tears began blurring her vision, "I just got so scared when you told me there were here. I thought they were going to find me. I thought the same thing was going to happen again."
"That's not going to happen again, I promise."
"As long as we're with you, nothing is going to happen to you." Juvia said.
"We have your back shortie."
She wiped the tears from her eyes, "thank you guys." She glanced around the car until she spotted Gray, lying on Juvias lap, breathing unevenly, "What happened to Gray?"
"Veena shot him." Lucy said.
"When he was protecting us." Juvia said, "I just sat there and watched him almost die."
"Stop trying to blame yourself." Erza said, "you know it wasn't your fault. If you want to blame someone, blame Veena."
"You're right." She glanced down at Gray, "I just wish I could have done something more. I wish I could've protected him. "
"What you're doing now is enough." Cana said, "as long as you're right by his side, you are protecting him."
