Chapter Nineteen

(Taylor's Point of view)

Taylor awoke to the sound of a car dinging as a door opened. The pungent smell of gas hit her nose making her wrinkle it. Opening her eyes, she watched people walk by, some stared at her. She slunk down further in the seat as the door shut and rattled the car back and forth. She watched Stone pass in front of the car after a bit and go into the gas station. Taylor wished she knew exactly what he wanted. His answer for why he needed her wasn't very much to go on. Taylor wished she could contact her parents and let them know that she was okay. She hoped that they weren't too heart broken and would do everything they could to understand what had happened. She also hoped that they didn't think she had been kidnapped, but they probably did because that's what parents always think. A shadow near her window made her jump, she saw Stone standing there looking up and over the car with two cups of coffee in his hand. She pushed down the button and her window went down

Hey?" She called out softly. He blinked and looked at her.

"Wut?"

"You okay?"

"Sure." He walked around front as she put up the window. He put the cups into the cupholders

"Did you see something?" Taylor asks quizzically.

"Maybe. Could be nothing."

"Want me to keep a lookout?"

"No. Maybe." Stone scrunched his eyebrows together. "I Uh I got you coffee. I didn't know what you liked so I got you a Hazelnut Organic Nicaraguan flavored coffee." Taylor smiled as she grabbed it from him and sniffed it.

"It smells good." It was a warm fuzzy smell.

"Sorry if you don't like it." He said as put the car in motion

"I'm sure I will. It's a little hot so I'm going to let it cool off."

"That's fine."

"So, where are we?"

"Canada."

"For reals? I've been asleep that long?"

"Yes Ma'am." He said nodding his head

"Did you go through the border patrol and everything?"

"Yeah. They thought you were dead." He said with a chuckle, this caused Taylor to laugh too, but nervously.

"Why?"

"Because your head was flung off to the side, and you didn't move a muscle even when one of them clapped in your face." Taylor blushed as Stone let out another laugh

"Oh." She scratched her head, "That's embarrassing."

"Hey it's okay. You've had a tough couple days."

"Yeah." She cleared her throat, So, how did you convince them I was alive?"

"I didn't. I just paid my fee and kept going."

"Oh. So um where in Canada are we?"

Ottawa. We're about forty three hours from Vancouver and then we'll stop for the night."

"Okay. So wanna play twenty questions?"

"I guess. But how about just ten or five." He glanced at her and she caught his eyes and held them.

"Sure." She tucked her hair behind her ear and sat crossed legged in her seat. "Do you wanna go first or me?"

"You."

"Okay. Ummm. Do you have any siblings?"

I used to." He said with a sniff

"What happened to them?" She asked softly

"That counts as a second question." He said turning towards her

"I retract it then, do-"

"I need to ask you now."

"But you already know."

"So? That's how the game goes, you go back and forth." Taylor crossed her arms

"Nu uh. That's not how I play." Stone pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Do you want to learn more?"

"Yesss."

"Then play by my rules." He said roughly.

"Okay okay. No, I don't have any siblings."

"Now it's my turn. What's your favorite color?"

"Blue and white oh and black. You?"

"Black."

"Umm Where would you take your girlfriend on your first vacation together?"

"How do you know it would be a girlfriend?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow up.

"Well I-I just assumed-I don't actually I-." She sputtered out before falling silent with a red face.

"It's easy. I'd take her to Hawaii, and I would teach her how to surf." Taylor smiled as her face returned back to normal.

"That sounds like fun. I would take my boyfriend to Germany."

"Why?"

"Because I'm part German"

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah. My mom is German, my dad is Swedish."

"Mmm alright then. Next one, do you know how to shoot a gun?"

"No and I don't intend to learn. You?"

"Why? And yes, I do."

"Because they are dangerous. I have no need for one."

"What about for protection?"

"I've never been in danger. That is until now. But I still won't have to worry, I have you." She said as she sipped her coffee which tasted heavenly.

"I'm not always going to be here." Stone said after a while

"What does that mean?"

"It's not important right now."

"Why won't you tell me anything? I've gone quietly with you. I nearly killed us. We're driving a stolen vehicle. Why won't you tell me?" She watched him grip the steering wheel as he accelerated

"Because those things would just ruin everything. Everything needs to be done step by step. Do you understand Alina?"

"A-alina? I'm not Alina." She was jerked forward as he hit the breaks because the light had turned red. He sighed and glanced at her.

"You're right. You're not. Not anymore."

"Not anymore. What do you mean?"

"Just forget it Taylor." He growled out. The light turned green. He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck "I will tell you everything as soon as I can. But what I have to say you are not ready to hear. Now please stop asking." He looked at her pleadingly. She just nodded, uncrossed her legs and looked out the window. Soft country music began to play as Stone turned on the radio.

"I'm sorry Taylor. I didn't mean to lash out. Do you want to continue with the questions?"

"No." She shook her head. "But I am hungry."

"Wanna look up what's around?"

"Sure, but I don't have my phone."

"You don't?"

"No. All my stuff got left in the car."

"Well then use the extra phone. It's in the glovebox." She reached for the glovebox and opened it. Things slid out and she grabbed the items. As she glanced at the items, three things stood out to her. One was an old colorless photograph of a young boy holding a baby and the other was of two men. One had a missing eye. Then there was a note taped to a picture. Lifting the note, she held in a gasp as it was a photo of her and her parents. The note had their full names and ages on it as well as their address.

"Did you find it?" Stone's voice came.

"What? Oh yes. I did."

"You're going to have to turn it on. I turn it off when I'm not using it."

"Okay."

"I promise we'll replace your stuff. I'm sorry it got lost."

"It's alright. I suppose." She said nervously as she shoved the items back into the glovebox.

"Plus you'll need some winter clothing. Before we get to Alaska we'll stop. I have to stock up on canned food anyways. We'll make a day trip."

"Sounds fun." She gave a weak smile as she turned on the phone. Watching the apple logo pop up, her mind swirled. Why did he have their photo? What was he hiding?
