Chapter Forty
A minute after he said that, a gun went off, a fire erupted, smoke detectors went off and Alina felt herself being pulled from the cabin as it blew up into flames. They were thrown into the snow and the coldness startled her system. Debris rained down on top of her.
"Are you okay? Are you okay!?" A worried voice asked as she was rolled over. With blurred eyes, she saw Alexie kneeling over her, blood trickled from his temple. Alina regained her hearing
"Yes, Yes I'm alright. What the hell was that?"
"A trap that Danka and I set up. We knew they were coming for us and it was only in a matter of days. We set a silent timer to go off which tripped the gun hidden in the T.V cabinet, it went off which tripped the lighter to spark fire to the gasoline floors. Then we rigged the cabin with a bomb to go off the minute the smoke dector went off."
"But your cabin."
"It's alright. We'll be lucky if none of them survive." Alina sat up in a frenzy.
"Where's Danka?" She looked around but couldn't see her.
"Spread out, let's find her." Alina rose to her feet shakily.
"Okay." Her ribs screamed with pain, looking down she saw a gash on her bicep. But other than that she was in one piece. She prayed that her sister would be too
"Alina!" Called a voice, filled with despair. Looking, she saw Alexie a little ways off holding something. She ran across the snow and fell to her knees. It was Danka, still breathing but barely. Her side was bleeding too much, Danka held up her hand and Alina took it
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about me sooner." Danka said as she coughed up blood, but before Alina could respond, Danka continued, "I-I-I had to protect you. Please take this with you." She shoved a necklace with a gold heart into Alina's hands. Danka kissed Alina's cheek as tears and blood mixed together. Then Alina held her sister close to her body as her sister breathed her last breath. Alina cried out to the sky with her sobs as she bent her body over Danka's.
"Alina, we have to go. The police will be here soon." A hand shook her shoulder as she sobbed
"I can't just leave her, why couldn't it have been me?"
"Alina, Alina!" The name sounded foreighn to her now, but she looked at Alexei, his eyes sad
"What?"
"I know it's hard, but we have to leave her here, we have to-" Headlights hit their eyes.
"Stay where you are!" A voice said through a megaphone. They froze, Alina looked at Alexie, her tears stopping instantly.
"What do we do now?"
"We run." So they did, into the night of dark with the police right on their heels. Leaving a trail of bodies behind them....
