"HAZEL!" James yells as I walk into the bright, sunlit garden, the gentle breeze hitting my face as I stroll to the little black table. I continue to ignore him as he yells my name twice more.
He stands beside me with his arms crossed as I open my book: The perks of being a wallflower and turn to the page I left on.
"Hazel Joanne Robinson you listen to me right now!" James yells and I look over to see him very red in the face, I edge away from him and I let out a loud tired groan.
"What?" I say, really irritated.
"Don't use that tone with me!"
"You sound like Dad"
"James stop it" Laura says with a sigh as she walks over and tries to plead with him.
"I won't stop it! Believe me it's going to be just like last time with..."
"James stop this now, you should be happy for Hazel and shouldn't be comparing Daniel to her ex-boyfriend! You're making me very stressed and that is not good for my current state of health!"
His angry expression softens and he runs a hand through his brown hair.
"Okay fine, I can't believe Mum and Dad have let this go, but I like Daniel and I'd rather it be him and let's be honest I love it here and I don't want to ruin the holiday"
I nod with a smile, leaping up to hug him and he hugs back.
"Thanks James"
"No problem, now where is Dan anyway?"
"Well after we came home yesterday holding hands you flipped, and when we told you the truth Mum and Heather started getting all excited about it and he ended up going shopping with Ellie and his Mum this morning because he was scared of seeing you again"
"Oh"
"Yeah, well done" I say sarcastically, picking up my book and running a hand through my wavy hair before marching into the house.
"I know you're her brother and everything but you don't have to be so damn overprotective!" I hear Laura yell at him.
Dad actually took it really well and Mark was really happy, I received hugs from both of them and Mark told me that he had a small hunch that something like this would happen.
I open the fridge and I pull out a can of coke; I open it with its usual fizzing sound that makes Murray stare at me, I sip it quietly as James and Laura come in.
"Do you want me to give him a ring or something?" Laura asks putting her hands on my shoulders and looking at me with a small smile.
"Nah I'll probably head over to the high-street in a minute, see if I can find them"
I grab Dan's jean jacket and I hook it over my arm along with my small little black bag, I start out of the kitchen but James' words stop me.
"What are you going to do when we leave?"
I freeze and spin round to him, he gives me a serious expression. His hands buried in his black jean pockets.
Laura glares at him and shakes her head.
"You don't need to answer that Hazel" she says making James stare at her in confusion.
"We'll cross that bridge when it comes to it"
"Haze..."
"Bye!" I say before slamming the door behind me.
***
I walk down to the crowded high street where tourists are dashing around into the various gift shops, people are taking pictures in front of the various scooters that are racing around and a woman and a baby stand outside the sweetshop and she rocks him as he begins to cry.
"Ethan please be a good boy for Mummy!" she says exhausted.
I give her a sympathetic smile as I walk past and she returns it; I turn left into the small vintage clothes shop which is far less crowded, the walls are packed with racks and racks of tops and skirts, a few dresses and some mannequins which always freak me out because they remind me off someone who is just frozen in time. I examine a mint green blouse that hangs smartly on a metal hook.
"How does this look?" I hear a familiar female voice ask.
"Nice"
"Dan you said that about the last two!"
"Well it's not my fault Mum left me to come in here with you, why can't she do it?"
"Because she's Mum and she always finds an excuse"
A smile tugs at my lips and I chuckle at the sibling banter between the two of them. Ellie looks up, her long brunette hair swaying at her shoulders and she smiles.
"Hi Hazel" she says
Dan jumps and looks over his shoulder and waves enthusiastically.
"Hazelnut!" he says running over and giving me a tight hug and pressing my face into his chest.
"Dan...can't breathe..."
"Oh right, sorry"
Ellie slyly edges past us and nods to the shop assistant.
"Bye guys!"
Dan rolls his eyes and slips the unwanted material back on the hooks and we head out of the shop onto the street.
I feel something gently nudge my hand and I look down to see Dan's hand lightly brushing against my own, I smile up at him and he looks a bit taken a back.
"Sorry, I-I just..."
I slip my hand into his and a small smile creeps onto his face which I return.
"Don't worry about it"
We walk side by side to the café and we sit down to enjoy some lunch (which Dan insists to pay for) and then we head home.
"So you're sure James doesn't hate me?!"
"Yes Dan, I've sorted it!"
"So you don't think James would mind if I took you out tonight?" He asks rather slyly with a smirk on his face
I laugh as I smile at him and I shake my head.
"And where would this be taking place?"
"Oh, that's a surprise"
"So this is like a surprise date?"
"Yeah a date, exactly"
"No I don't think James would mind"
A date huh?
***
"Hazel?!" Yells Dan from downstairs.
"I'm coming" I yell over my shoulder before turning back to Laura.
"How do I look?" I ask spinning in a circle, letting my light blue dress fly around me.
"Stunning" says James poking his head in.
"I totally agree" Laura says nodding.
"Who did your hair?" He asks, motioning towards my French plait on that sits on the top of my white and blue striped dress. And Laura waves her hand and he congratulates her.
I bounce on my toes flapping my blue flip flops around due to my nervousness.
"Haze, this is Dan you're worrying about, you've known him for ages remember?" Laura says adjusting the silver hairband on my head that has tiny silver detailed butterflies with small crystals incrusted in each that Laura had lent to me.
I nod with a small but nervous smile and I walk down the stairs to where Heather stands next to Dan smoothing out his freshly ironed white t-shirt and light brown shorts.
"Mum seriously?!"
"Sorry...sorry!" She says backing away with an anxious expression.
He looks up at me with his bright green eyes and smiles widely.
"You look...beautiful" he says placing his hands on my own.
"Thank you" I say smiling.
Laura grins and James rolls his eyes with a clearly un-satisfied expression.
"Let's go then! Bye Family" Dan announces, taking my hand and leading me down the hall to the front door.
***
Dan steadily helps me off of the scooter and my flip flops make a flap noise as I step carefully onto the pavement.
I look over to the beach, almost deserted except for the one dog walker who is making his way to the steps, the sun is ever so slowly setting giving the sky a pinkish glow, the sound of the waves fills my ears and the smell of the salt air calms any of the remaining nerves I have about this date thing.
"Well?" Dan says fearfully.
"This is amazing!" I say as he grabs a small picnic basket and grabs my hand.
We walk onto the beach and he lays down a small red blanket and perches himself on the soft fabric with me opposite him, we open the basket to reveal a small crab and rocket salad in two pots and a selection of breads with pink lemonade.
"Did you do this?" I ask enduringly.
"Well Dad helped me with the salad, the lemonade Ellie helped me pick and I know someone who owns the bakery in the high street so he gave me some of his best breads"
"Dan this is lovely"
He smiles and shrugs his shoulders.
"It was nothing"
"No seriously this is like my perfect date, I've always wanted to have a picnic on the beach"
"That's where I got it from!"
I raise my eyebrow and he shakes his head in stupidy.
"There was this lingering thought in my head about a beach date and I must've remembered you saying it to me"
"Maybe" I say taking a bite from the salad on my fork.
A burst of flavours fill my mouth, chilli, lemon, pepper, the spice of the rocket the zing of the sauce.
"Oh my god" I say closing my eyes and going back for more.
"Good?"
"That's the understatement of the century"
He sniggers and I laugh along with him.
"Sometimes you can be such a dork" he says, shaking his head again.
"Oh...really?" I ask a little hurt.
"But that's okay because you're my dork"
I smile at him and lean over to kiss him on the cheek and he smiles sweetly.
"Dan you just...Has Ellie been giving you tips or something?"
He gives me an odd expression, shaking his head.
"No"
"Well you know exactly how to make a girl feel wanted"
He grins and bites into a wholemeal slice of brown bread.
"One of my best friends is a girl, maybe which helped"
"Maybe"
I stare out to the sea and I unfold my legs so I'm sitting in a more comfortable position.
"So Hazelnut I'm curious, tell me when's the first time you felt like you liked me?"
I look over to him and he leans forward curiously, the bread in his hand being pulled to his mouth again as he takes a bite, never taking his eyes off me.
"Uh... well I felt different when I told you all that stuff about Harvey and you listened...yeah that and also the next day where you held onto me when I bumped into you and every time you saved me I got shivers it was like you were...my superman"
I blush and he laughs, closing his eyes before looking at me again.
"Superman? Oh man that feels good, I try my best"
"How about you?"
"Oh well probably like the day after you first arrived and I got a little distracted when you wore this white dress and...you just looked stunning"
"I wanted to make an effort"
"Well it worked, but it's not just your good looks for me it's your personality, but I told you about that in the alleyway"
"I still think it's weird that we had our first kiss in an alleyway...it's a good weird though"
"Yeah, but that was just the situation we were in and the misunderstanding with Emily"
"What happened with her by the way?"
"She saw Mum and then ran to the ferry, don't worry I called her explaining!" he finishes as I give him a guilty expression.
He turns his attention back to the crab and I do also before he gasps.
"What?"
"I'll be right back"
He hops up and runs to the scooter as I sigh and then laugh at him, same old Dan.
He hurries back with a small bouquet of white lilies, a small smile on his face as I gasp.
"For you" he says as I stand up and take them from him.
"Oh Dan, I...Just...You're going to make me cry and that's going to ruin my make-up"
"Which you don't need"
"Lilies are my absolute favourites! Especially white ones!"
"I thought roses were too stereotypical for a unique girl like you"
I put the lilies down onto the blankets and I pull him down into a hug which makes him chuckle.
I then pull him in for a kiss and we stand like that for what seems like forever before we sit, with Dan resting on my lap as I play with his brown hair as we talk about everything we have time for while sipping the pink lemonade.
And when asked later when I walk into the door after a kiss goodbye, grinning like crazy with the beautiful smelling bouquet as Dan runs upstairs for a shower because he got sand on his feet. But back to the point, when asked by Laura how it went all I can say is: "Wow"
