Chapter 2 The journey
Hello!
So here's another chapter :D (I'm going to have to work on these introduction things :P)
I really love the sibling banter in this one (ha banter sounds so British) between Hazel and her brother James, I guess there was a bit with Daniel and Ellie in Chapter 1 but I like how James is teasing Hazel more (Speaking as an older sibling) So it's hard to try and experience what it would be like as the younger one which is why I can easily write Daniel teasing Ellie.
Ugh I just confused myself.
I do that an awful lot.
I'm rambiling (beware I do that a lot too)
If you haven't read Chapter 1 READ IT O_O
So not many reads, as expected of course haha, I'm really just talking to myself right now. I think I've had about 6 as I have had to check some chapters but apparently that counts as a read too so 11 is false, 6 YAY :)
Let me know if there are any errors :)
By the way if you are reading this from an ipod or iphone (whatever) You won't be able to see trailers (if I ever have one) from youtube, the cast list which you basically says that if it was a flim who would play your characters and it's an option only for computer users,or any pictures I decide to put at the side, just saying :)
Hope you like it!
Lauren :D

Hazel P.OV
I am finally finished packing, so I place my shoulder bag over my shoulder.
"Haze are you ready?" Asks Dad.
"Sure Dad"
He grabs the handle of my suitcase and heaves it out of my door and onto the landing.
I take a last look at my bedroom that I won't see for two months, yeah two months away from this place HALLEUJAH!
"HAZE!" Mum shouts
I close my door behind me and I fiddle with my owl necklace, allowing my fingers to graze over the detailed eyes and feathers of the silver charm as I walk along the landing and down the carpeted steps.
Mum hands me a packed lunch which I take miserably, I'd much rather buy a sausage roll or a peppered steak pastry, but I won't mention this, I slip it into my bag.
Mum's hair is brown like mine, dyed though (as she's secretly going grey, but she says I have to keep that to myself) she has blond highlights in it (she says, and I quote: "all the young hip people are doing it") and has ocean blue eyes that look happy and excited today. My brother has her eyes and the same hair as me although his is flat and short, mine is long and wavy and usually in a ponytail. Dad's hair is grey and boring but his brown eyes are wild, and full of humour whenever he cracks an unfunny joke.
"Got everything?" Mum asks.
"Yes Mum"
"Good girl, oh...is it okay if you sit in the very back of the car, we need to put a bag in between Laura and James, who will be sitting in the back"
"I guess"
She's referring to our seven seater, I'll have to sit in the foldable seats that drive me mad, but I'll let them off as I want to give Laura some room, the seats are quite comfortable in the very back I suppose but not as much as the rest of the car.
***
I walk down the gravel driveway, listening to the crunching it makes under my trainers.
Laura stands next to me, we both control our laughter as Dad struggles to put the cases in the silver seven seater, James sighs and shakes his head when Dad looks at him.
James takes the case from Dad and lifts it simply into the car, they continue to work together, and then Dad closes the boot and opens the back door.
Dad pulls down one of the black seats and motions for me to climb over.
I clutch my bag and climb grudgingly over the seat, I shift over to the left seat and buckle myself in, relaxing against the soft material.
Soon the car is filled and Dad starts up the car, I look back at the semi-detached house and I know that I won't miss life here.
***
The car bumps as Dad drives over to the entry bariier.
"Tickets Clary?"
Mum rolls her eyes at the nickname and gives him the white sheet containing our details.
He hands it to the man and he nods, he gives us a hook on thingy which Dad hooks onto the mirror, he thanks the man and we wait patiently behind the other cars.
***
I walk around the deck, watching the mainland get further and further away. A small baby is crying his lungs out not far away; I look at Laura who stands next to me watching a man go past on his sailing boat.
"That'll be you soon" I say.
"Yeah, in nine months"
I smile at how stupid what I said sounds, it's nine moths away! I don't think that comes under soon.
"That will go quicker than you think" I retaliate.
"I think he or she will be born in March or April"
"Aww, oh I have been meaning to ask, how are you?"
"Better, but I think it's going to get worse"
I hug her sympathetically.
"Where's my brother?"
"He went to get me some water"
James emerges from the inside area with a bottle of water.
"Here you are babe"
She kisses his cheek and takes the bottle from his hand.
"Thanks"
They really are the cutest couple, though I feel my eyes tingle a bit, I blink rapidly, I can't cry, I will get over Harvey, this holiday will get my mind off him, hopefully.
***
Dad is tapping the gear stick impatiently, waiting for the ramp to go down. Mum turns to us in her seat, her hair bounces as she does.
"Is everyone okay?"
James turns to Laura.
"I'm fine" she assures him with a smile.
"If she's fine I'm fine" says James
Aww when did my brother become such a hopeless romantic?
"Hazel?"
"What?...Oh yeah I'm fine"
"Cheer up, you'll be seeing Daniel soon"
"Something to look forward to" says my brother, twisting in his seat and smirking at me.
I kick his seat and he opens his mouth to say something.
"Calm down!" Mum shouts, her voice bringing deadly silence afterwards.
James has been teasing me all weekend about seeing Daniel, after some false rumour about Daniel having a crush on me when we were 14.
A man dressed in a luminous yellow sleeveless jacket, gives the all clear to Dad and he slowly descends down the ramp, Mum gripping the sides of her seat in panic of how steep it is.
My parents give a sigh in relief as we reach the bottom; we are finally on the Isle of Wight!
I whoop for joy at my realisation, James gives me a weird look, I have the strong urge to kick his seat, but I'm being mature about this.
I'm back to being bored again.
Great...
***
Dad stops at a petrol garage.
"Does anyone want anything" he asks.
"No" I say shuffling in my seat to get a better view at where we are.
"James?"
"I'm good thanks"
"Laura?"
"Water please if that's okay; ill give you the money"
"Nonsense!"
Mum rolls down the window as Dad reaches the store.
"Wait Graham! Can you get me a coffee?"
"Sure"
***
Soon we are back on the road with the SatNav guiding us, Mum is stressing as we are going down a very narrow road.
We drive past a pub that seems oddly familiar.
"Mum where are we?" I ask
"Newport"
"Don't they live in Newport?"
"Yep, so not far now, in fact it's only off of the high street"
We go through the high street which includes: a sweet shop, with lots if coloured lollipops and fudge in the window, a fish and chip where five people are waiting, a café that is almost full, a restaurant and many other things.
Dad suddenly turns left.
"I think it's that one" Mum says pointing at a road labelling it green leaf avenue.
I smile as we go down the road towards number 28.
As we past 20 I am thinking of what to say when I see Dan.
"Hi Daniel, lovely to make your acquaintance" first pops to mind.
No too formal.
Ugh what am I going to say?!
Just say hi, come on Hazel you can do this; he's a friend not a Duke!
Dad stops the car and looks behind at us all with a grin.
"WE'RE HERE!" he shouts deafening us all.
Thanks for that Captain obvious.
He leaps out of the car and practically skips to the door.
Heather opens it and I hear her call to the others as Dad has left the door open.
I take my bag and sit patiently waiting for Mum or Dad...No probably Mum to pull up the seat so I can leave this claustrophobic nightmare
"It's nice to see you Graham and Clarissa" booms Mark shaking Dad's hand but then hugging them both.
"And Laura and James, lovely to see you and congratulations on the news!' He continues
"Thank you" James says awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.
"Yes thank you, we are very excited" Laura says after glaring at my fool of a brother.
Fool or hopeless romantic?
Hmmm...
I'll go with fool.
"Hi guys" says a girly voice, must be Ellie.
"Hi" says another voice, is that Daniel?
"Oi Dad!" I yell
All right heads turn to look at me.
"You forgot Hazel!" Mum says
Dad comes over and peeks through the still open door.
"Sorry about that Haze"
"I might forgive you if you get me out!"
He quickly moves back the seat and I take off my seat belt, and I jump out of the car clumsily.
"Hey Haze" says Ellie giving me a hug.
She pulls back and I smile enthusiastically.
"Hi Ellie" I say looking down at her grinning face.
"Mark" I say nodding.
"Good afternoon Hazel" he says with a small smile.
I look over to my left to find Daniel, my legs suddenly feel like lead.
"Hi Hazelnut"
If my legs were made of lead, they would've snapped by now, as I throw my arms around his neck and hug him tightly.
"Hi Dan, long time no see"
He squeezes me back just as hard.
"They act like a couple and they aren't even one...yet" says Heather.
I reluctantly pull away from Dan with a puzzled expression, I clear my throat and look over at Heather, what's that supposed to mean?!
"What do you mean?" Dan asks
Thank god he asked it, I don't want to make an awkward atmosphere when we've only just arrived, thank you very much.
Heather chuckles, she looks at Mum with a strange expression, as if Mum knows what she's going on about.
"Just a small joke Danny, Hazel understands my humour don't you?"
I look at Dan; he's confused, made obvious by his expression.
"Of course" I lie, thank god I'm good at lying; I remember I covered for Dan once, when we said that we were definitely not sitting on the shed roof when we were about 8. Heather smiles brightly at me as I try to look like it's funny.
"I'll bring in the suitcases, can you help me mate?" Dad asks Mark
"Of course"
"Come on, I'll show you your room" says Dan leading me towards the detached house, it's a lovely house and is absolutely huge, but then again this is coming from a girl who shares a semi detached house and whose neighbours are either young families with small kids or cranky old coupes, his house is plain white with simple windows, a blue door and a flat roof.
I follow Dan down the little welcoming paith and into the...let's call it...The Foster residence.
It's exactly how I remember it.
The floor is dark and wooden and has a scarlet rug with gold trimmings in the middle of it, to the tight of the hall there is a corridor that leads to the other rooms, on the left are the stairs leading up to the wonderful rooms above.
Mark used to work as a lawyer before he became a fisherman, that's why everything is so luxurious, he only earns a small salary now, I think Heather is unemployed, I'll ask soon.
Dan stands there with his hands in his pockets.
"Um...Haze?'
"Yes? Sorry...It's just exactly how I remember it"
"Nothing's changed really"
"Where should I leave my shoes?"
"By the door, there's a cloak room"
I bend down and untie my laces carefully, concentrating hard; I pull then off and place them next to a pair of Dan's trainers.
Something pink and sparkly catches my eyes, it turns out to be just a pair of plastic flip flops, probably belonging to Ellie. Hmm, I wonder if I could get them in blue?
I finally follow Dan up the white carpet stairs, I examine the paintings or framed photos briefly as I walk past them, one is a photo of Ellie and Dan when they were younger, the next is a painting of some Poppies, I have to skip a few of them to keep up with Daniel.
We reach the landing, a smallish area leading to the many bedrooms and two toilets. He leads me past a few of them then stops outside two.
"This one's mine, that one's yours"
"Yes I remember"
"Bathroom..."
"Forth door on the right and second door on the left"
"Jeez, are you sure you even left?"
I genuinely laugh for the first time in days, finally something good is happening.
"Here you are" Says James as he walks down the corridor pulling my heavy suitcase.
"Thanks bro"
"Dad told me to give to give it to you"
His eyes go to Daniel and he gives me a smirk, he then strolls off .
We walk into my blue and white themed room, with a small double bed and white wood furniture, exactly how I remember it.
"Don't mind him, he always teases"
"He always used to, I'm not better with Ellie"
"She's very girly"
"Yes she is...annoying actually"
"I bet you are the best brother"
"Nah"
I put my case by the wardrobe and walk over to the desk, where there is a photo of a younger Daniel and a little girl.
"Who's the girl?"
"That's you"
Then I remember, they came to ours when I was about 10 for New years Eve, I've got a pink wig, on that's why I don't remember.
I should've remembered, this is my room after all.
I turn to him with a smile.
"This is definitely going to be the best summer ever"
"Yes it is" he agrees meeting my eyes with a grin.
