Chapter 47

Simon's death was gaining attention again in local media. It all started when his mom filed a complaint citing the prep played a part in her son's demise. She was interviewed on local TV accusing prep of denying his son's basic rights to self-expression. In her heartfelt interview, she passionately called for the Department of Education to conduct a preliminary investigation concerning his son's death and the involvement of Prep, or lack thereof to his son's bullying. "We are a community, we look after each other, what happened to my son might also happen to your children, if it's not happening already. We can choose to end this now." She was having her Nelson Mandela/Matin Luther King moment on TV.

Simon's Act of Confession also made rounds in local newspapers with one full feature article dedicated to Simon's struggles as an open homosexual student in a purely catholic school. Soon the call for justice spread like wildfire and demonstrations were held outside prep by an LGBT group advancing the rights of people like Simon who called themselves "Rainbow Warriors", a name which I thought was so gay. They were holding printed pictures of Simon and placards quoting a line from Simon's poem the Act of Confession; "May God, have mercy on me, set me free...".

Reporters and protesters from Rainbow Warriors as well as Simon's mom were denied entry in the premises of prep during their demonstrations. It didn't stop them anyway. At one point, it had all the ingredients of a fruitful revolution, something that might indeed achieve its goal in due course. But it didn't. It was short-lived. Everyone got tired and realized they had better things to do than to be holding placards and screaming aimlessly at the walls of prep.

Days went by slowly and the Simon issue was naturally covered up by other 'more pressing concerns' like what sister Maria Segundina said during her speech for the students to remain steadfast and pray for the school's absolution from the accusation she called "scandalous".

By mid-September, the call for justice in Simon's death had died out. With no witness willing to testify for Simon, the complaint could not move forward.

It was not surprising. Nobody wanted to defend an odd homosexual kid who hung himself. That's two unforgivable mortal sin right there and this mainly catholic Christian town would have none of it. One female reporter from the local TV who had a boyish haircut and might easily be a lesbian by common standards did not give up on the topic easily however. Her name was Narcissa Castro of the MGM news, I saw it printed in bold letters across the calling card she handed to students that ended up in trashcans. She pressed on and asked couple of students and teachers at prep hoping she'd get enough grounds for her article. I had seen her car parked a couple times outside the school but nobody gave a damn about Simon or interested to be interviewed in his defense. It did not take her long enough to drop the topic altogether like the rest, and prep was once again cleared from any accountability whatsoever.
