Story #1-Sorrow Beginnings

This was written by kingleyah

Dear Book of my Soul,

"OUCH!"

I'm okay. I just stubbed my toe, but I'm sure you don't care. You're just a notebook full of blank pages I'm supposed to fill.

I'm still debating on what I should call you. Diary, journal, load of shit. Mrs. Know-It-All says this will be good for me to express what I go through on a daily basis, but I don't think I agree with her. How is a notebook supposed to solve my problems? Am I to unleash all my deepest, darkest secrets, talk about how that mighty nice looking boy over there looks at me as if he wants to take me out for a drink, what?

I guess I can start with my name. It's Avery. Avery Watson. Like the Watson's go to Birmingham. I had to read that story in 7th grade, but got bored and never finished it. I still managed to make a 100 on the quiz.

Now I guess I will write about how my day went.

I was forced to wake up at 6:30 this morning due to some banging at my window. My best friend has trouble realizing people are still dreaming about ponies during that time. After I dressed, I let him in.

I wish he would choose front door over my window. Any normal person would do that, right?

Today was one of those days where he decided to rant about his ex-girlfriend to me. He told me that I was cold-hearted because I had advised him to stop caring about her and let her get a taste of her own medicine.

He is cute, but way too emotional for me.

Eventually, I told him to leave since she was the only thing he wanted to talk about. I then shut my window and laid back down to get some more rest. Not even fifteen minutes later, my niece came jumping on top of me.

My younger sister was only fourteen when she got pregnant. My mother was heated when she found out; I thought she was going to kill her. Nevertheless, the baby happened, and it's now sprouted into a feisty two year old.

Since she's only 2 and still working on her speech, she calls me Auntie Abey. I asked her what was wrong. Apparently, my sister wouldn't wake and that's very strange because my sister wakes up for Evelyn no matter how tired she is.

I popped out of bed and headed for her room, two doors down from mine. I peeped inside her room as if we were playing a game of hide-n-seek. She was sprawled out on her mattress like a dead animal, her covers stripped from her body.

At first, I called her name softly. I thought maybe she was playing then I got louder and louder, shaking her as if she was a brand new toy.

No sound. No movement.

Evelyn then came running in the room crying. I didn't want her to think something was wrong. I soothed her momentarily, before I made her go downstairs and wait on me.

After standing in Marie's room speechless for a couple minutes, I rushed down the stairs to locate the nearest phone. Without thinking, I had dialed 911. I knew the ambulance would be there in 10 minutes. I gathered a bag for Evelyn and one for myself as well. I was so terrified that I began to sweat, and let me tell you, I'm too beautiful to sweat.

When the ambulance arrived, I drove my own car and followed behind them.

To me, the ambulance wasn't going fast enough. I wished I could've been the driver of the ambulance so we could already be at the hospital. They drove as if my sister wasn't the most important person in the world.

I'm not sure why anyone likes being at the hospital. When I was younger, my mother would work night shifts as a nurse and I would have to sit in my god mother's room while she worked. She would always let me go sneak a vanilla ice cream. Man, I wish she was still living.

Marie was rushed into the hospital. Nobody told me anything. I was used to the way things were in hospitals due to my numerous times being in them, so I picked a spot in the lobby for Evelyn and I to sit and wait. My patience was running short but there was nothing I could do.

I remember hearing Evelyn ask if Marie was going to be alright. It was cute, but sad at the same time. Instead of saying alright, she says awright. I told her that's all I could hope for. I didn't think things would be okay, but I wasn't going to ruin my nieces thoughts on her mommy coming home.

Which brings me here.
