As Anabeth sat in the corner checking her reflection in the dark screen of her mirror, I poked my head outside to see what was going on. Complete darkness filled the tunnels outside of the car, not even the emergency lights were on.
"Hey, come look at this." I whispered to Anabeth, motioning for her to come over.
"What," She mumbled, stomping over. Once she saw the emptiness, fear and horror filled her eyes.
"It's so dark," Anabeth murmured, looking down the long subway tunnels.
"Yes, thank you, I have eyes." I huffed.
"Shut up you little brat!"
"Oh, what's that?" I said, pulling her gaze down to the tracks where little creatures scurried about the rails, trying to escape the light blazing out of the car.
After a single glance, she jumped back, running to the opposite end of the car.
"What's wrong? It's only mice."
"What's wrong? What's wrong?! I'll tell you what's wrong, I'm stuck in a subway car with none other than 'king of the emos' here. We have no food, no water, and no help! What am I supposed to do?!"
"You're in no better shape than me, princess. I'd rather be stuck with anybody else but you here."
""Ugh, you're so annoying!" Anabeth growled.
I polished my nails on my jacket. "Why, thank you."
Anabeth groaned and stomped over to a seat near the back of the car. "What can I do?" She cried, holding her face in her hands.
"Here, I'll show you what you can do," I said, smiling. I walked over, grabbed her wrist and pulled her back over to the doors.
"Wait, here?" Anabeth asked, pulling back. I pushed her forward, stopping her at the edge of the car.
"Can you just relax...?" I trailed off, letting go of her arm.
"Relax and...?"
"And fall into the darkness!" I yelled, nudging her with my elbow, forcing her out of the car and down to the tracks of the subway.
I took a quick glance back at the car. Although I hate to admit it, Anabeth was right, we have no food, no water, and no help of any kind. We need anything we can get, and we need to get out of here fast. Of course, she was still a bit wrong, I have food. I thought, swiping a half-eaten slice of pizza from the floor of the train car. Pizza in hand, I hopped off the subway car over to where Anabeth lay, whimpering in a patch of light. Even she wasn't stupid enough to think we could go our separate ways and escape alone. We were going to have to work together.
"You idiot!" Anabeth growled under her breath, rising to her feet with a wild look in her eyes. Wincing in pain, she stumbled over to me. "How dare you throw the Anabeth Brite off of the Subway!"
"How dare you insult my actions!" I smirked, taking another bite of my pizza.
"Where did you get that?" She asked, crossing her arms. I pointed up to the subway car and her mouth dropped in shock. Anabeth marched over to the tracks again and picked up a stray magazine, rolling it up.
"Don't, eat, food, off, the, floor!" She screeched, whacking me upside the head with each word. With that she plucked the pizza out of my hand and threw it across the floor, where a happy pair of rats picked it up and carried it away. Well, at least we made their day.
"Hey, you took our only food!" I crossed my arms and pouted like a child, or at least like Anabeth.
"Yeah, yeah." Anabeth gave me a little talking hand and walked on her tiptoes down the tracks, yelping at every rotten banana peel or apple core.
"Where do you think you're going?" I called after her. Maybe she was stupid enough not to realize we needed to cooperate.
"The exit?"
"And where might that be?" I crossed my arms and tapped my foot impatiently, waiting for her response.
Anabeth twirled around like a puppy chasing its tail, looking for the answer to my question. After she must've gotten dizzy she held her hand to her forehead and stopped to steady herself.
"There's no exit." She whispered. I wasn't sure if she was telling me or herself.
"Yeah, I know, princess." I huffed and crossed my arms.
"There. Is. No. EXIT?!" Anabeth looked up at me, fear in her eyes. I took a step back, afraid of what she would do. Not that she was scary or anything, but the girl looked like she could throw a punch if needed."
Like the little priss she was, Anabeth laid on the floor, tears flowing from her eyes. Before I knew it, she was hugging her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth slowly. I jammed my hands in my pockets and looked around, unsure of what to do at her soft whimpers. Like any confused teenage boy would do, I poked her with the tip of my shoe.
"I will never understand girls," I sighed.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Anabeth cried out through her tears.
"I understand you're upset but, you realize you're lying on the concrete floor of the subway. Basically the home of the rats. I wouldn't even do that, and according to your friends, I'm even a dirty rat myself."
"I never said that." Anabeth stopped shaking and stood still, her eyebrows furrowing slightly with a mix of confusion and slight anger.
"Oh please, don't even try that." I rolled my eyes and waved the thought off. Before I knew it, she had lept to her feet and was holding my arm midair. I tried to retract my arm, but it wouldn't budge. She was strong for a princess.
"What's wrong with you?" I tried to pry her fingers off my arm, but I couldn't.
"I never said that." Anabeth repeated, her words like knives. "Clear?"
"Okay, jeez!" I held up my other hand in surrender and she released the arm she had been holding captive, dusting herself off.
"Alrighty then! Shall we find the exit?" Anabeth gave me a fairytale-like smile and skipped down the tracks. I watched mesmerized as she got farther and farther away, and ran to catch up, the crash and car fading behind.
