70 [important] things I learned freshman year✌
1. I'm not an 8am class type of girl. Finishing early is nice, but it's not worth my sanity xD
2. Don't overdo your work load. +15 credit hours is a lot (especially if you're taking a lot of hard classes), and it's ok to tell your advisor you're not comfortable with it.
3. Also, having +4 classes in a row can be rough! It will give you a lighter week, but the days with +4 classes in a row will be exhausting. Know your preference, and know your limit.
4. When picking classes pay attention to class location. I'd strongly suggest looking at a campus map while making your schedule. You don't want to leave yourself 15 mins to get across campus, and try to eat something on the way. #BeenThere
5. If you have a large gap in between classes go the library, and get some work done. It's tempting to take a nap ( and of course if you need it then go for it), but if you're able to be productive you're really going to thank yourself. 😊👍
6. Not having a car really isn't a big deal. Considering it takes forverrrrr to find a parking space (up to 40 mins at my school) you're better off without a car lol. Oh, and let's not forget gas, maintenance, and insurance money.😭😂
7. Having a bike is really nice. It's convenient, dependable, and good exercise.🚴😊👍
8. The school's busing systems are legit, and pretty reliable...and free 🚃😏👍
9. Try out different clubs/ organizations!! You could discover your new favorite hobby, as well as meet your new bestfriend 😱😊😃😉
10. Going off of #9, it's ok to not like a certain club/ organization. Give it a try, and if you don't like it then don't keep going. Don't give up your happiness for someone else's.✌👍
11. Be careful with over extending yourself. Being a part of too many organizations will leave you really exhausted, not fully committed to any of them, and your grades will probably suffer too. 🙁👎
12. Chances are there's a lot more to the city you're in than just the school itself. Get out and explore! You might just find your new favorite hangout spot 😱👍
13. Explore your campus! Don't just limit yourself to where your classes are, see all of the campus! Check out that grassy area, or that courtyard, or that random coffee shop😃
14. Freshman 15 is real! Try to eat right, and exercise. Simple things like taking the stairs, walking to class, and biking to campus all help. A lot of universities offer fitness classes like yoga, spinning, and Zumba! Check them out!!
15. Football games are really fun, and it's kind of a right a passage to attend at least one game. Even if you're not into sports, go for the experience! From the tailgate, to the the energy/ school spirit, everything is incredible.🏈🍕🍔🎉
16. You will make friends...if you want to (and trust me, you will. College is a lot less fun when you're lonely 🙁
17. Try to be social. Chances are he/she is just as nervous as you, and you never know when you could be talking to your future bff. 😉👊
18. Befriend the lunch lady, security guard, repair dude, cleaning people, and everyone in between. It's a nice thing to do, and you'd be surprised by how much it means to them. Xx
19. Don't forget your friends from home. You probably will lose some (and that's ok), but your true friends won't leave your side despite distance/ busy schedules.💪✌
20. It's ok to sit alone in the dining hall. No one will think you're a loser lol. Lots of people sit alone, and it's totally acceptable, pretty normal tbh. You don't have to be with people 24/7, it's ok to take time for yourself 😊
21. The stress of finals week is real, and so are all nighters. The libraries and starbucks are opened 24/7, and they're both super busy 24/7.😂 ***A lot of teachers like to assign a final paper...don't wait until the last minute to start them all... #BeenThere #ItsRough😭😂😂😂
22. Depression and anxiety are also real, and it's ok to not be ok, and to seek help. Most schools offer free therapy/ counseling, so take advantage of it.💪👍👊
23. It's ok to drop/ withdrawal from a class. Withdrawing from a class is much better than failing. Failing a class will look worse on your transcript, and will kill your GPA. *** But don't go crazy with it. Withdrawing from a ton of classes won't look too hot either, and most schools only give you a handful of withdrawals, so use them sparingly. Also pay attention to the drop/ withdrawal deadline!!
24. If something happened that caused you to fail a class (death of a loved one, a sickness, etc.) you can tell that to your counselor/ advisor, and they will remove that grade from your transcript.👍
25. Receiving mail is beyond exciting. Send your address to your family and friends, an ask them to write you. A single letter from a loved one can really brighten your day 😃❤📪✉
26. Living on campus is fun, convenient, and really helps you get plugged in. 😊👍
27. Befriend your RA/ people in your hall, and go to your hall's events. You'll make a lot of really good friends, and some amazing memories 😄👍
28. It's ok to take a personal day, but don't get too crazy with it. Your parents are paying big bucks for your education, so don't throw it away lol. Plus you never know when your professor might drop some handy exam hints, or even extra credit. 😱😏😉
29. In general the fraternity/ sorority stereotypes are true; both the good and the bad. Yeah most tend to be expensive and party hard, but if you join one you truly will have lifelong best friends, and amazing connections for down the road. 😊👍
30. Roommate nightmares are legit. I strongly recommend investing in earplugs and a night mask. 👌😂😂😂
31. Be honest on roommate agreement (basically a contract that says what your roommate can and can't get away with)...if your roommate brings people over past a certain hour, and you said in your agreement that you didn't care, well there's not much you or your RA can do about it. ***If this or something similiar does happen to you then your best bet would just be to nicely ask your roommate to stop. 😊
32. EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK STORE IS CRAZY EXPENSIVE. Check amazon, and other students first, and then as a last resort go to the bookstore. Also, wait until your first day of classes before you buy books. You might not need all the ones on the syllabus, because sometimes they're just suggestions, and teachers are legally required to list them. ***Pn ratemyprofessor other stduents will tell you how often they actually used the book(s). 😄👍
33. Some schools have a Facebook page where students sell their old textbooks for cheap, so be sure to check if your school has one!😄👍
34. As a student you get free amazon prime (crazy fast delivery from Amazon), so take advantage.😊👍
35. Rate my professor is super legit, and can save your life. I'd definitely check it out as you pick classes.😂👌
36. Homesickness is normal. Go home sometimes, and if you live too far to visit then call, write, and skype sometimes.😊👍
37. Some colleges have Facebook pages dedicated to carpools that make stops all throughout your state. Be sure to check if your school has one, especially if you have issues getting home for holidays.
38. Wearing PJs/ gym clothes to class is acceptable, and honestly the norm. People who dress up and put in real effort end up looking out of place, and silently get judged the hardest xD 😂😂😂
39. There's always something more exciting to do than homework...so learn to say no. It's hard, but it'll be even harder trying to write a paper in a few hours. 😭😂
40. Professors can be flexible, and most actually do care about you. If you're having trouble just tell them, and 90% of the time they will help you.😊
41. Professors can also be really bitter, and as a result make your life unnecessarily difficult. In this case all you can do is try your best, and summon your inner fighter.💪✌
42. If you don't understand something it's ok to get help. Going to tutoring doesn't make you dumb, not going and staying confused makes you dumb. If you're lost get help asap, because the longer you wait the more confusing things will get. 😢
43. There are a lot of free tutoring opportunities at your school, so pick them out, and utilize the resource... don't hire someone.
44. Office hours are your bffs, and really give you brownies points. It's ok to be a suck up to your professor lol. Going to office hours really gives you an edge. Even if you don't have a question, find a reason to go anyways :P It shows you're serious, and actually care about their class. They're sooooo much more likely to write you that letter of recommendation or round your grade if you're on their good side, and going to office hours will get you there.😏😉👍
45. Some classes are hard. This means you're going to have to legitimately study. Depending on your learning style study groups could be your new bestfriend. If being in groups of people is distracting then putting in some extra personal studying time, or meeting with a tutor for a one on one session will be your best bet.😊👍
46. There are a lot of cool places to study on campus (grassy areas under a tree, libraries, study rooms, random courtyards tables, lowkey coffee shops, a dining hall table), so get out of your dorm room and give them all a try! You could be missing out on a major sweet spot!😊😉
47. Your grades don't define you. Doing badly on a test doesn't make you a bad person, it just means you didn't quite grasp the material. If you fail a test don't beat yourself up over it. Just study harder, get help, and nail the next one😊💪👍✌
48. Having the number of someone in each of your classes can be really helpful. If you miss class, or aren't sure about something it's nice to have someone you can ask.😊📞
49. Between classes, due dates, meetings, clubs/ organizations, and different events life can get crazy! The best way to keep up with everything is some type of planner. I recommend google calendar.😊📅📆
50. This is your chance to start fresh, you don't have to be the shy awkward girl from high school if you don't want to 😊 But don't forget to be yourself. Don't use this as an opportunity to lose yourself in some fake façade, but rather to feel free to be your true self.🙈❤👍
51. Peer pressure is real. Make sure you're solid in your beliefs, values, and faith, because in college they're going to be heavily challenged, and if you don't have a solid foundation you're going to give in.
52. The syllabus is everything. You're playing a new game, and the syllabus is the rule book. It's your secret weapon. You won't survive without it. All the important due dates and important rules are in there. My chemistry professor shred papers slid under her door...I would've found out the hard way if I didn't read the syllabus lol.
53. If you have a long walk/ bus ride across campus it's nice to have music to listen to, so be sure to bring earphones with you. The days that I leave them I personally get really bored.😢😂🎵🎼
54. Invest in a refillable water bottle. It's convenient and good for keeping your hydrated, especially if you're in a hot state and on a big campus.
55. Don't over pack. Dorm rooms are small, and move out/ in day will be tough if you have a lot of stuff. If you can't cut back then try bringing a few items home each time you visit. This will make move out day a lot lighter 😊
56. Take lots of pictures/videos! You're gonna wanna remember your college experience 😊🎥📹
57. It's ok to not know your major, and/or to switch later on.😊
58. Academic advisors are your friends. If you have any questions about a major, or school requirement you're gonna want to see them. 😊👍
59. You really are broke, and Publix is crazy expensive. #TeamWalmart #TeamMarkedDownRack #TeamOffBrandStuff 😂👍
60. You'd be surprised with the amount of free stuff on campus. Different campus groups/ companies (usually apartment complexes at my school) often come to college campuses to advertise their cause/ product. To reel you in they often offer free things...even if you aren't interested in whatever they're selling there's no harm in picking up that free water bottle, tshirt, tote bag, lunch, etc.😏😉😂
61. Never walk alone at night, even if it's a short distance. The campus is physically accessible to everyone, so be careful. Take advantage of the campus bus system, bring a friend, don't listen to music or have your face glued to your phone, and have pepper spray just in case...
62. Starting a Netflix series during the semester is dangerous...
63. Due to such tight quarters colds spread like crazy! If your roommate is sick it's very likely that you'll get sick too. Try to use Lysol wipes, wash your hands frequently, and take vitamin C.😕😷
64. Have medicine beforehand, because when you're sick the last thing you want to do is get out of bed and go to a store.😴😷
65. Start apartment hunting early. If you plan to live off campus your sophomore year, and wait until the summer after freshman year you're gonna have issues.😐
66. Always be on the hunt for scholarships, you might just get it 🙂👍
67. Fill out your FAFSA each year, and do it on time!👍
68. ATMs usually charge a service fee, so instead of using an ATM just ask for cash back the next time you're at a store and use your debit card.😊
69. Pack at least ONE business outfit. You never know when you'll have an interview, or formal presentation. Also pack at least one formal outfit.
70. College is amazing, and it's a time to grow as a person. It really is one of the best times of your life, so make the most of it, live it up, and enjoy it to the fullest. 😊
This list started off with just 5 things, then 10, then 20, then 40, and finally 70 xD I hope you find this helpful, and have an amazing college freshman year! Did I miss anything?? Let me know in the comment section! Lots of love, and God bless. Xx
