November 5th
Riley followed Liam out to the car and got in the passenger seat. She waited for him to get in and thanked him for the ride for the second time. He turned on his music and Riley didn't recognize any of it. It sounded pretty old, but she couldn't place when.
"So, uh... Boston told you guys?"
Liam nodded as he pulled out of the driveway, "Yeah. That was two weeks ago though, Riley." He looked over at her and watched for her reaction. She didn't really give one, instead just nodding.
"Oh."
"He also said that you guys were broken up," Liam continues and sighs slightly, "Do you want me to take you straight home?"
"Well, would Katherine be mad at you for talking to me like this? And like giving me a ride?" Riley asked him because she didn't want to be a homewrecker. Not more than she already had.
Liam gave a kind of scoff when he heard what she said. He shook his head and sighed before replying, "No. We actually, uh, broke up a couple of weeks ago." He hadn't sounded too upset when he confessed it, but Riley still felt horrible.
"Oh my gosh, Liam I am so sorry," Riley looked down and mentally kicked herself for not being more aware. "I didn't know. I would not have said anything. I'm sorry."
"Nah, it's okay. It was overdue."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Riley wasn't sure if she was overstepping, but she felt bad complaining to him about all of her issues if he was going through something of his own.
Liam shrugged and said, "Maybe next time," he didn't realize the butterflies that that sentence gave Riley, but she didn't say anything before he continued, "Besides, this is so we can talk about your problems right now."
Riley was totally surprised by the utter selflessness that he had exhibited. She nodded and said, "I guess it's just frustrating that he made all the promises and then the first time that he got the chance, he just broke them all." She looked down and leaned forward in the seat as he drove around their small town.
The senior hummed a little and then asked, "What promises?"
"Not to lie? Not to use me. I don't know, but he promised to stay there, to be good. And I had faith in him. It's the same thing with every guy who shows moderate interest." Liam glanced over at Riley and something flashed across his eyes before Riley kept talking. "This is how it goes, okay?"
"Okay."
"A guy will tell me that he has a crush on me, or that he thinks I'm pretty. And then my insecure need for validation will say, 'oh yeah, we like him back,' but it's not real. The guys always just want to see my body, or touch my butt, and when I don't do it, it's the end of the world and I'm not cute or pretty anymore."
Liam didn't say anything, but he kind of chuckled when Riley slapped a hand over her mouth and her eyes went wide.
"Wow. That was a lot of sharing. I am SO sorry." She looked down and sighed.
"No, it's okay. I get it, sometimes we just need someone to vent to."
