Chapter 37
Oh my gosh. We're actually here. The last chapter of Story of Tonight. I seriously can't believe this. This chapter might be a little shorter that I would've liked it to be but oh well. But stay tuned for an author's note at the end! You might wanna read what it has to say!
My world had plunged into darkness.
We had brought her to a nearby village where they took her away. That was the last time I ever saw her face.
Yet somehow, I kept going.
Maybe it was her last words. She didn't want me to give up. She wanted to win the war. So I had to fulfill that dream.
It's been about a month since Y/n's death. Hamilton retreated back to his room, probably to write all the sadness away. Washington's expression remained the same, grim and dark, as I told him the story. Generals aren't supposed to show weakness, but I haven't seen him smile since.
It felt like a new hatred for the red coats spread through the camp as I told everyone of the tragedy. Now, we seemed to be winning more battles, cutting the enemy down faster than we ever had before. I truly believed that we were close to the end of the war.
The Revolution would soon be won, and the colonies would emerge victorious.
I wish I could've been there in person.
Instead, the Battle of Combahee River came. My team and I fought hard, but not hard enough. The raging pain from the bullet was painful, but not as painful as the loss I had experienced only weeks ago. Tuesday, August 27th. The sky was clear that night and the stars twinkled brightly against the vast darkness that lay beyond.
One star started to shine brighter, with an intensity that I've never seen from anything less than the sun. Suddenly, it morphed into a silhouette. I watched in amazement as the impossible took place before my eyes.
The figure became more familiar, turning into a shining version of Y/n. She held a hand out to me. I wasn't sure what to do. Surely, my hand would pass straight through hers, but I took it anyway. It held as she pulled me to my feet. Any previous pain from the bullet was gone.
"I should've told you to take your time." She crossed her arms, but a smile rested on her face. I looked back to where I had been lying, a little shaken to see that I was still there.
But I was also here in... ghost form? I was too shocked to say anything for a while.
"I know. It's a bit odd at first, to see yourself like that." A bit odd was definitely an understatement.
Finally, I found my voice. "I-I can't believe it."
"Can't believe what?" She asked.
"That I'm there and here at the exact same time. You're here, but you came from a star, and now..." I stopped myself. "Now my head hurts." I mumbled, probably sounding like a little child. "Trust me, I can relate." Y/n said.
Then she hugged me. It was a feeling that I'd missed so badly. A feeling that mended the hole in my heart.
"Come on," She said. "I'll show you what life... or death... is like from the clouds."
