The experience of walking half a mile to get to the boats was... nerve wracking. Every time a soldier in red looked in my direction, I silently panicked, sure that they would see right through the disguise and arrest me. Fortunately, Herc's costume worked better than I could've hoped!
Besides the lingering worry of getting caught, my main attention was focused on getting Y/n. She was in one of those prison ships, probably locked away with no food or drink.
Finally, after what felt like hours, I arrived at the ships. They seemed worn down, falling apart, and some even half submerged in the water. I couldn't think of a worse place to live. I approached a guard, trying to look tough and serious. "Sir!" I called toward the man. There's been word of some prisoners escaping. From what I've heard, they've headed North!"
The guard glared as his grip tightened around the gun he had been holding. "Take my post." He said, and ran off in the direction I had pointed too. When the red coat was out of sight, I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding. Then, I went on to fulfill the mission I had assigned myself.
Inside the ship was worse than the exterior. Mold grew in every corner, only adding to the foul smell that drifted through the air. An unmoving figure laid on the floor in one of the cells. Even in the dark, I could tell it was a girl. I knew immediately it was Y/n.
I heard footsteps enter the moldy cabin behind me and I froze, expecting it to be the guard from earlier. To my relief, it was Mulligan.
"Laurens!" He called. "Did you find her?" I looked back down at her, not knowing whether she was alive or not. "I-I think so."
"Is she okay?"
"I'm not sure."
Hercules sighed. "Well come on. Let's get her out and see if we can get her to a hospital nearby." I could tell he was trying hard to keep his cool in this situation. He quickly busted the door and we both ran in. I fell to my knees and frantically tried shaking her awake. "Come on Y/n! Please, you can't go yet!"
Her eyes fluttered open, and relief flooded through me. I hugged her, tears forming in my eyes. "Y-your alive!" I gasped. She managed a small smile. "Of corse I am."
Mulligan butted in our short-lived reunion. "Guys, we better go. There's no telling when a red coat will come through for a security check."
"He's right." I agreed, then turned to Y/n. "Here I'll carry you."
She waved me off. "No, I'm fine. I can walk." With the help of the bars, she stood shakily, but as soon as she let go, she crumpled to the floor again. We watched her try again, but it was no use. She groaned on frustration.
"I give up." She grumbled. I quickly picked her up in my arms, and we set off to get out of the camp. "So." I asked. "What's the plan?"
"We get out without getting caught."
"And how do we do that?"
Y/n spoke up. "If we go out the back of the ship, there should be some rowboats attached to it. We can use those to cut through the river, then go through the woods on the other side."
I nodded. "Good idea."
Herc and I ran in the direction that Y/n told us too go, and sure enough, there was about half a dozen rowboats all tied to the ship. "I saw them on my way here." Y/n explained. "I figured that they would always store their smaller boats behind the prison ships."
We chose the sturdiest looking one and piled in as Hercules sawed off the rope with a knife. The fibers broke easily, probably because the rope was old, and soon enough, we were rowing across the river.
I was surprised to find out that no red coats followed us, or even seemed to notice until we were halfway to the other side. We heard shouting from where we had came from. A group of British soldiers congregated on the shore, pointing and screaming at us. A couple piled into a boat of their own and began to chase us. We had to act fast.
"Is there any way to row faster?" I panicked. Y/n was curled up on one of the seats, looking ghastly pale. That didn't help my trepidation.
"They're gaining!" Mulligan cried in alarm. "Go faster!"
"What do you think I'm doing!?"
I closed my eyes, and focused all my energy into getting to the shore, and soon enough, we had reached a sandy beach, with a wide forest that seemed to stretch forever. We all spilled out of the boat, and tumbled onto the grass.
Again, I picked Y/n up off the ground. I looked over at Mulligan, the fiery, determined glint matched my own. "I guess this is it." I said.
We dashed into the woods, leaving any sight of the British camp behind.
