Chapter 28

Hello my peoples! My precious readers! My cinnamon roll lovers! I AM SO SORRY!  I haven't updated in a while and now.... SUMMER IS OVER!! I was spending the last couple of summer days with my friends and family and not to mention I had to celebrate a special event...

MY BIRTHDAY! It was not too long ago.

I'm probably going to update less frequently because of school and studying, but I'll try to update as much as possible!

Last thing, everyone needs a shirt with the picture above on it!

The war came all too soon. Before you could even say 'George Washington', the carriages came to take us away. You looked out the window as New York disappeared into the distance. Laurens placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "You alright?" He asked. You nodded silently, leaning in closer to him. You sighed, closing your eyes, trying to erase the thoughts in your head of what could happen.

When you opened your eyes again, the carriage rolled to a stop. "Everyone off!" Yelled the driver. You quickly got out and felt the cold air, like icicles pricking your skin. You shivered, your breath puffing small clouds into the sky. John put a comforting arm around you.

You quickly walked towards the tents, but were interrupted to hear a distant voice yell. "Attack!" It was a British soldier. You quickly grabbed and loaded your gun, getting into position. All around you, soldiers dropped like flies. The once green grass was stained red.

Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Alex fall to the ground. You broke position, running towards your brother. Bullets flew everywhere, almost invisible from the speed. "NO!" You cried helplessly as Lafayette was shot down as well. You saw a redcoat swing his bayonet towards Mulligan, piercing him in the chest. Tears filled your eyes, running down your cheeks.

Your head was spinning and your vision went blurry. You could hear John's faint call. "Y/n! Look out!" He threw himself in front of you, taking a bullet meant for you. "Y-Y/n..." He choked, blood seeping through his fingers where the bullet had impaled him. You dropped to your knees, sobbing and Laurens slowly died in your arms, and soon enough, you felt an intense stinging in your chest, and the taste of blood. Your vision turned black.

Then you woke up.

You were still in you bed in the guest room of John's house. Nothing had changed. You were panting heavily, tear stains on your cheeks. Your heart was pounding so hard, you thought it would burst. You could hear faint footsteps in the hall, gradually getting louder as they came closer.

Laurens threw open the door. "Y/n! What happened? Are you okay?" He asked in a panicked tone. You didn't realize you were shaking until now. "I heard you scream. Are you okay?" He asked again. Slowly, you nodded. "I-it was just a nightmare." You stuttered.

Laurens came closer, sitting on the side of your bed. "Do you wanna talk about it?" He asked tenderly.  "We were going to war, but when the British attacked, Alex, Herc, and Laf all were shot or stabbed," You started shaking again. "T-then I... I wasn't watching what I was doing, a-and then you saved me, but y-you got shot and you... you d-." You cut yourself off.

Laurens wrapped his arms around you, pulling you closer to him. Your head rested on his chest. "Y/n, just listen to my heartbeat." He said. You did, and slowly stopped trembling. John was still alive, and that comforted you. The two of you stayed like that for a while as Laurens stroked your hair. Your eyelids grew heavier, and you yawned tiredly.

John laid your head down on your pillow, and quickly kissed your forehead. He started to walk out for the room, but you called him before he closed the door.

"John." You said quietly. He turned, leaning on the doorway. "Will you stay?"

He smiled brightly, nodded, and walked back towards you. He quickly got under the covers and you snuggled up to him. He cupped your cheek in his hand, and kissed you gently. You hugged him tightly in return as all your fears of the way were washed away and replaced with admiration and solace. Before you closed your eyes, John lifted you chin tenderly. He spoke quietly.

"Always."
