Chapter 20
Here we are! Chapter 20! Honestly I didn't think I would get this far, but I have! I will try to post this as soon as I can because I'm going to a sleep-away camp with my friends (Yes you hamiestar!). Then i'm going to the mountains for the 4th of July and sing Hamilton songs forever and ever and ever and ever and ever you'll be back... *cough* sorry. Soooooo yeah.
Everything was a blur, and not because it went by fast, it wasn't fast enough. It was mostly because you couldn't stop crying from worry. Alex and Lafayette came back with nurses who took John away. You followed them to the hospital tents.
"What do you need?" A stone faced woman said when you tried to enter the tent. "To get in." You sidestepped, but she blocked your way. "You look fine, you're not hurt. Also why is a woman, such as yourself wearing a soldier uniform?"
"I never said I was hurt, but my... my friend is." You said, ignoring the soldier question. "I'm sorry," The woman replied, not looking sorry at all, "but you can't come in. It's the rules." She began to walk away, but you grabbed her wrist. "I can help!" You said, desperate to get in.
"Huh." Stone-faced woman looked confused. "I can help! I'll do anything you want me to do!" You pleaded. The woman sighed, looking at the ground. When she lifted her head back up, she had a small smile on her face. "You're a stubborn one, aren't you?" She sorta chuckled. "Yup!" You replied proudly, "Just like my brother."
"Well, miss- what's your name?"
"Y/n Hamilton." The woman looked at you, surprised. "Hamilton? Well then, I assume your 'also stubborn brother' is Alexander Hamilton?"
"That's right."
"Well miss Hamilton, my name is Mary Weston, and may I ask, again, why you are wearing a soldier uniform?" She had that look of curiosity in her eyes. "George Washington appointed me." You promptly said. "But you're a girl." Mary Weston looked confused.
"Can't a woman do anything a man can do? We can't just sit around in a house all day, watching men go to war and never come back." You were ready to say more, but she cut you off. "I suppose that's why I'm here too. I don't know why I ever asked."
"Anyway," She continued, "You wanted to see your friend?" She smiled on the word 'friend', which made you blush madly. "Aha!" She exclaimed loudly, "I knew he was more than a friend! I wouldn't think that someone would be this desperate to go see a friend!"
Mary walked you into the tent. "So who's this guy you wanted to see so desperately?" She asked.
"John Laurens." You replied, searching the hospital tent. Her face darkened. "He's over here," She ushered you over to a nearby tent, "but we don't think he will make it. He was out in the sun for way to long. It'll take a miracle to-" Mary cut herself off. She gave you a sympathetic look and put a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Also, Y/n, make sure to get that cut cleaned up." With that, she walked away.
You took a breath and slowly walked into the tent. Tears formed in your eyes as you saw Laurens, his eyes shut, his fists clenched. He was breathing heavily, slightly shaking. You hurried over to his side and immediately took his hand.
You sat there for who knows how long, mumbling 'stay alive'. Doctors came by sometimes to check on him or switch out the damp towels on his forehead. All of them questioned your presence. Every time you would say, "I got permission." Then after that, they would question your soldier outfit and you would say, "Ask General Washington." The longer you stayed, the better John got. Slowly but surely, he stopped shaking and his breathing slowed to a normal pace.
"It's a miracle!" Incoming doctors would exclaim.
You thought back to what Lafayette had said, that day when Laurens saved you from death and your evil step mother. The day you found Alex. The day you made friends.
"No. Not a miracle." You replied every time, "Just love."
