Chapter 18
IT'S SUMER! YEAH! Hopefully I will be able to update some more. I do still have things going on though. I have some camping trips, long road trips, and acting, but I'm not as busy as I was during the school year.
Also, go follow my sister PhillipHam4life!!!
British Admiral Howe's got troops on the water. Thirty-two thousand troops in New York harbor.
They surrounded our troops.
A large group of men stood, emotionless, watching as the ghastly boats appeared on the horizon. You were the only woman. You knew two things were about to happen. One, since you were surrounded, the British general would attack and most likely succeed. Two, Washington was about to come an moment to assign troops.
Then, you heard your brother's voice. "As a kid in the Caribbean I wished for a war. I knew that I was poor, I knew it was the only way to-" John joined in, "rise up!" You took a breath and said what was on your mind. "If they tell my story I an either gonna die on the battle field in glory or-" Now, Mulligan joined in with you and the two other men,"rise up!" John took your hand in his. You looked up at him. Hopefulness flooded his eyes. You gave his hand a reassuring squeeze, then turned to look at your brother.
You caught Alex's eye. He gave you a smile, which you mirrored back. "We will fight for this land, but there's only one man who cam give us a command so we can-" You and your brother said as Lafayette joined, "rise up!" Still together, you kept on going. "Understand it's the only way to rise up! Rise up!" Next to you, Alex whispered, "Here he comes."
The crowed of soldiers split, and everyone cheered. "Here comes the general!" One man. who you recognized as Aaron Burr, the one who you saw talking to Alex a long time ago, must've been really excited, because he ran around screaming, "Ladies and gentleman!"
"Here comes the general!"
"The moment you've been waiting for!"
"Here comes the general!
"The pride of Mount Vernon!"
"Here comes the general!"
"George Washington!"
The General turned to face the crowed. Worry and seriousness was etched across his face. His voice boomed over the rabble's.
"We are out gunned!"
Your heart sped up, and your breath caught. "What!?"
"Out manned."
"What!?"
"Out numbered, out planned!" The crowed went wild.
"And we gotta make an all out stand! Ayo, I'm gonna need a right hand man!" You nudged your brother. He could be the General's right hand man! Alex shook his head, knowing what you were suggesting to him without even using words. You nodded your head right back at him, not taking 'No' as an answer.
As Washington talked on, a sinking feeling grew inside you. A war was about to happen. People would be killed. You had already experienced the pain of heartbreak, and you didn't want to again.
You glanced over at Alex, your only family you had left. Only a couple of months ago did you realize that the passionate man at the bar was him, and you already couldn't bear the fact of loosing him.
Next, you looked over where Hercules Mulligan was. You remembered how he made you all laugh in any kind of situation, good, bad, or terrible. He was always there to put a smile on any sad face.
Nothing would ever be the same without Lafayette. He was the one who tried to teach you french, and never gave up on you, even when you couldn't pronounce the word for the life of you. Not only had he just not given up on you for learning french, but also for everything. He was almost like a cousin to you.
You finally directed your thoughts towards John. You remembered the multiple times he had saved your life, how he had always been there for you, and you loved him for that. You promised yourself that you would try to keep them alive, even if it meant putting your life on the line to do so.
You snapped out of your thoughts just in time to hear the General give orders to meet at the camp tomorrow morning. You nodded to show that you were listening. The General continued to give orders, "For now, we will try to fight these British soldiers who are coming by their ships. Now go!"
Everything turned to chaos. Patriots ran everywhere, grabbing weapons, ammunition, or firing away at the ships. Then, you heard a creak, which sounded like someone was opening an old, wooden door, coming from the boats. Everyone froze. You could feel the color drain from your face. You knew what was coming. The British were about to fire their cannons, and not just any normal ones, but the most huge cannons in the world. One of these could destroy an entire city, or crush a whole army.
The first cannon fired, shaking the ground with the force of an earthquake. The pain filled screams rung in your ears. More cannons were fired. Again the ground shook. One of the gigantic metal balls smashed into the building beside you. Pieces of brick and concrete were hurled at you in unimaginable speeds. You saw one chunk coming towards you, but you couldn't run. Your foot was stuck between two smaller pieces that you hadn't yet realized were there. You braced yourself for the pain, but it never came. You felt someone push you out of the way, and your foot coming free. Nothing hurt until you hit the ground.
You opened your eyes to see the ruined building in front of you, and the deadly chuck that could've killed you. You turned to see that John Laurens was on the ground next to you. He was breathing heavily, a look of panic plastered on his face. You knew it was him who had saved you, again. "Y-You okay?" You asked, your voice shaking from the terror you had just felt. He nodded and sat up. You did the same. Both of you were still on your knees. He looked at you for a second as his breathing slowed to a normal pace, then wrapped his arms around you. You immediately returned the hug, surprised to see that tears were starting to flow down your face.
"Y/n, I thought I was going to lose you." John said quietly. "As soon as General Washington ordered us to retreat, I went looking for you. When I found you, the cannon ball had hit the building," His breath quickened again, "and I thought that-" He couldn't finish. You cupped his cheek, "Thank you so much for saving me." He gave you a small smile. "I'm always right here for you." With that, you pressed your lips against his, until you heard the sound of another cannon.
"Didn't you say that the General ordered us to retreat?" You asked.
"Yeah." John replied.
"Oh. I never heard him."
"Well, let's still get outta here."
Both of you got up off of the stone street in the middle of that ruined town and ran towards the direction of the camp.
