Chapter 8: New Guardians and Going Under
Nat P.O.V.: (Bet you didn't see that coming)
"Okay, so. Here's the thing," Director Fury said from the chair opposite us.
After Nadia fixed the invisibility shield permanently and changing into another catsuit, The Director brought us to an empty confrence room.
I sat as straight as I could, anxious to hear what he had to say regarding the young girl to my left. Despite only knowing her for a couple hours, I had grown an almost motherly feeling towards the young girl. "Although we know who your family is, we need to do many things so that we can ensure your safety, such as: investigate them and those close to them so that we are sure that they have no connection to Hydra, we also have to make sure they are aware of your situation, and that they can handle another person in their home. But before any of that can happen, we need you to be trained how to blend in the crowd, and by that I mean not beating the first person who tries to hit on you to death."
She scoffed. "I wouldn't do that!" She said indignantly. We all looked at her. "I would burn him." She said pouting and crossing her arms. "Burn him?" I questioned. "Oh! That's right, you guys don't know about my abilities." She mumbled. "Abilities?" Clint questioned.
"Yes, I have abilities, several actually. I can control the elements, along with their subcategories, and telepathy." She mumbled. I could tell she wasn't telling the whole truth, I'll have to ask her about it later. Clint and Fury looked at her in shock while I kept my face stoic. "What?" She asked. "Nadia, where did you get these powers?" Director Fury asked me. She gave him the 'Are you for real right now?' Look. "Oh, right, sorry. Forgot all about the whole memory wipe thing." He said chuckling. I rolled my eyes. "So what were you going to say?" I asked.
He sighed. "Well, since we don't know who you are exactly and your blood family isn't here, we need someone to be your legal guardian." He said folding his hands on the table. "And...?" She said asking for him to continue. "Until we can find you one, you will have to have an agent with you at all times." Director Fury finished. "So what your saying is that I have to have a Nanny everywhere I go?" She asked, clearly outraged. "Yes, not that we don't trust you it's just that," he sighed. "We don't know whether or not you could have an episode or if you have a flashback and no one knows where you are." He finished.
I recalled Clint and I's conversation last night before what happened when Nadia had started screaming in her sleep. "Actually Fury, Clint and I were talking last night and um... we were wondering if....." I broke off. "Well Agent Romanoff...?" The Director asked unnerved. Obviously it startled him to see myself nervous. "We were wondering if maybe we could adopt Nadia?" I asked putting my hands together. I could feel her gaze on me. I instantly remembered the questions I had asked myself which were undoubtedly running through her head at this moment when Clint rescued me from the red room.
Why do these people care so much? Are they trying to get me on their side of the battle?
"Well Nadia?" A voice questioned, breaking my train of thought. "Huh?" She asked. "Would you like Agents Romanoff and Barton to become your legal guardians?" Director Fury asked her. I looked her as she turned her gaze on each of us, her face as impassive as my own. She finally turned her gaze to the floor. "I don't want to be a bother." She mumbled. "Are you kidding me!" Clint yelled "You think taking care of you would be a bother? You are an amazing kid! We would be honored!" He said ruffling her hair. She scowled.
"Fine, but could we cut down on the hair ruffling?" She grumbled attempting at fixing her hair.
"So, I'll take that as a yes?" Director Fury laughed. She took another look at Clint and I before replying. "Definately." She said nodding. Clint and I both wrapped her into a hug. "Let's celebrate!" Clint said as we broke the hug. "As much as I like that idea, we need to get Nadia some street clothes." I said. "Here." Director Fury said handing me a credit card. "Thank you Fury." I said taking the card.
We all stood. "Remember to be back before midnight." Director Fury warned. "We'll be here Fury." I said as we made our way to the door. "Nadia?" Director Fury called just as she reached the door. "Yes Sir?" He smiled at her. "Nick, or Fury is fine. You don't always have to call me Director Fury." He stated kindly. She smiled back at him. "Roger that." She said as she left the room.
"What was that about?" Clint asked. "He told me to either call him Fury or Nick instead of Director Fury." She stated simply. "Ah. Well, let's go find an outfit for you to wear while we take you shopping." Clint said as we began walking down the hall.
Le Time skip brought to you by Clint's bird cry~
"Alright! Now that we have that taken care of." I said as Nadia walked back out of the bathroom she had been changing in. She pulled down the sleeveless shirt. "Are you sure I can wear this?" She asked as she looked over herself.
Clint and I had taken her to a storage room filled to the brim with boxes of clothes for new agents. After searching for god knows how long, we managed to find a box with articles of clothing in her size,-which was startlingly small for someone her age. We had decided on a button-up denim jacket with a highwaisted white skirt. (Outfit above) "Yes, you can't wear catsuits your whole life!" I said. She looked at me. "Says the woman wearing a catsuit." She chuckled under her breathe. I rolled my eyes and threw a sweatshirt at her. She caught it mid-air before tossing it into a random box. Clint and I started laughing.
"Fury says if you want to make it in time you should leave now." Agent Hill said as she walked into the room. "Well let's get going." Clint said bounding out of the room. Nadia shrugged and followed him. I shook my head before following.
To get to the mall we took a jet to the nearest city before switching to an S.U.V. and driving the rest of the way there. Silence was a foriegn concept as Clint began playing twenty questions with Nadia, trying to get the girl to open up more than just a few halfhearted smiles and hollow laughs.
"Age?" Clint asked. "I don't know." Nadia replied, gaze on the floor.
"Okay how about we get onto stuff your more familiar with. Then we'll move from there." I suggested. She shrugged. I looked to Clint who nodded. "Only answer these if you're comfortable, Okay?" He asked quietly but kind. Nadia nodded. Clint cleared his throat. "Okay, where were you trained?" He asked slowly. Nadia folded her hands together as she thought.
Nadia P.O.V.:
As I thought about the question Clint asked me, I couldn't help but feel something nagging at the back of my mind. I shut everything out as I tried to focus on that small part of my mind. Suddenly my head erupted into a massive migraine. I tried my best to hold in a cry of pain but couldn't hold it back as I wrapped myself into a ball. "Nadia!" I faintly heard someone call my name. But the darkness consumed me before I could do anything.
HELLO LOVELIES! I APOLIGIZE FOR THE WAIT BUT I HOPE IT WAS SOMEWHAT WORTH IT!
