Chapter 7: Late nights and discoveries
N's P.O.V.:
Nat, Clint, and I spent most of the night watching strange things on the television. I believe one of them was called 'Spongebob'. After a few episodes Clint had taught me the theme song and we sang it at the top of our lungs. Nat sat in the corner laughing and I could of sworn I heard passing agents laughing at our behavior. But in that moment, that amazingly peaceful moment, I didn't care. I was free.
But as they say, nothing lasts for ever. Eventually an agent came to where we were and informed us that Fury wanted to speak with us. We immediately took up an air of total seriousness despite yelling the spongebob theme song only minutes before. I examined the agent before us as we walked to Director Fury's office. She looked to be in her late twenties to early thirties, brown hair that was kept in a bun besides a strip of bangs that was tucked behind her ear. She wore a dark blue catsuit that had the Shield insignia on her upper arms. She also had a certain air of authority much like that of Director Fury.
The other agents in the hallway either gave nods of respect or didn't even look in our direction as we followed Agent Hill. We finally reached Director Fury's office after a long awkward silence and many twists and turns. "Well that was Hawkward." Clint muttered under his breathe so only Nat and I could hear him. "Hawkward?" I questioned with a smirk. "Since his field name is Hawkeye, Clint likes to use play-on phrases with his name." Nat muttered over her shoulder at us.
We filed into Director Fury's office. I couldn't help but feel nervous as we lined up into a straight line. As Agent Hill went to talk to Director Fury, I tried to hide my fidgeting hands behind my back. "Don't be nervous. Fury isn't a bad guy, he would never intentionally hurt you." Nat said under her breathe as she leaned over to me. Since I was only 4'9 she had to lean down several inches to reach my ear.
Although what Nat had said greatly helped me, I still couldn't help but feel nervous. After several agonizingly long minutes Director Fury dismissed Agent Hill and turned to us. "I would like you all to take a seat." He said gently. Nat and Clint walked over to the rows of chairs that sat around the oblong table in the center of the room. Despite my confusion I followed them. We all took one side of the table. Nat and Clint had made sure that I was between them.
The Director walked over to the other side of the table and took the seat directly across from mine. He sighed. "Well N, I have good news and bad news." He said as he put his hands together. I raised my eyebrow in question but didn't say a word. Clint broke the silence. "And that would be...?" He questioned. I looked at him astonished. You are never to question a comanding officer, ever. The Director chuckled in amusement.
He's not angry? But Clint questioned him.
Director Fury seemed to have noticed my distraught. "N, asking questions is not a crime. It's natural to ask questions. It's how you learn." He clapped his hands gently. "Now, onto the news. We got the DNA back." I tried to hide my eagerness as I waited patiently. This is it, I'm about to find out who I am. "We will have to go down to the lab though so we can get a better explanation." I nodded my head quickly. Director Fury chuckled at my eagerness. "Alright then let's go." He said standing up.
TIME SKIP BROUGHT TO YOU BY FURY IN A PRINCESS TIARA~
When we arrived at the lab Director Fury immediately walked over to one of the doctors in the room. "The results please." He said holding out a hand. The doctor immediately handed the Director a file. Nat gave my shoulder a reasuring squeeze. Director Fury walked back over to us. "We can read these in a spare lab. That way people can't intrude upon your privacy." Director Fury said leading us to a room on the right. Director Fury and I sat on a couple of stools opposite each other while Nat and Clint stood beside me.
"Are you ready N?" Nat asked as Director Fury handed me the file. I nodded and released the breathe I had been holding subconsciously. "Yeah, might as well do it now, otherwise I might not have the courage later." I chuckled nervously. Clint gave me a quick shoulder hug. I gave him a small smile. I closed my eyes and took a deep breathe.
Slowly I opened both my eyes and the file. The first thing I saw, was the name. Or should I say, My name. "What is it?" Nat asked. I realised I had been staring at my name. I cleared my throat. "Well, at least I know my name now." I said quietly. "What is it?" Clint asked excitedly. I chuckled.
"My name is Nadia Amelia Alderkey. And I have an Aunt named Irene, an Uncle named Harold, and two cousins named Elizabeth and Louis!" I said excitedly. Director Fury and Clint laughed at my behavior whereas Nat just smiled. Then I realized something. Nat seemed to notice my confusion. "What is it?" She said laying a hand on my shoulder.
I quickly skimmed over the few pages in the file before my suspicions were confirmed. "There is only information on my mother's side, nothing on my father's." I said quietly. Director Fury sighed. "Yes, unfortunately when we tried searching for your father we were able to narrow most of it down but as we were just about to get the truth some kind of virus crashed our computers."
I nodded taking in this new information. "Wait, Sir, if the computers crashed, how will we detect the danger?" Nat asked. I looked back at Director Fury who had begun pinching the bridge of his nose. "Until the computers are back up and running we are unable to find any danger besides our risk of being spotted." "Spotted?" I asked. "Because S.H.I.E.L.D. is a secret organization we have to keep a low profile, but without the computers our one way of avoiding discovery, our invisibility shield. is down." I put my hand up to my face and began biting my practically non-existent nails.
"How long do we have?" I said from around my finger. "We are about 15 minutes from the shore-line. We can't turn around either because it takes even longer to reposition the fans. Why do you ask?" The Director asked as he sat forward in his chair. "Where's the computer room?" I asked him as I stood. "I'll take you there." He said as he stood and walked to the door.
"You know, you never did answer my question." Director Fury asked from beside me. I kept my eyes forward. "Because if I can get one of my hard-drives from my old suit I'll be able to delete the virus and get that shield back up again." I said calmly. "I'll have Agent Hill retrieve the hard-drive." Director Fury said as we rounded a corner. I chuckled. "Actually it would be best if she could just bring the hard-drive case because I have multiple different use hard-drives and if I put the wrong one in we might not have a ship anymore." I stated casually. "You are a scary little girl." Clint muttered. "Who are you calling little?!" I yelled. "Calm it you two." Nat said putting a hand on each of our shoulders. "He started it!" I said pointing at Clint who was sticking his tongue out at me. Nat gave us each a gentle shove apart. Clint and I started laughing.
"Okay, the computer lab is just up ahead." (A/N:Computer lab is in the bridge)The Director said as we came to a large metal door. "Okay, I'll need access to the main computer." I said as I walked through the door. "This way." Maria Hill said from where she had been speaking to a computer attendant after looking at Fury for confirmation, to which he approved. She led me over to a large computer by where The Director normally stood. "Can I get a stool or something to stand on?" I asked politely. An agent brought a small stepping stool that he set in front of the computer. "Thank you."
"Agent Hill, if you wouldn't mind, could you retrieve my hard-drive case from my back pocket?" I asked as I began typing. "I'll be right back." She said running from the room. I managed to bypass the security protocals to reach the main desktop. (A/N: I actually don't know much about this I'm just making it up as I go) "I got it!" Agent Hill said as she ran through the doorway and over to where I stood.
"Thank you." I said taking the small hand-sized case from her. I opened the case to find that all my precious hard-drives were present and accounted for. "Now where is it?" I muttered. "Ah! Here we are!" I said as I pulled the hard-drive I had been looking for out from it's special compartment. "Five minutes 'til we reach shore." An agent said from the lowered area. "I only need three." I said as I plugged in the hard-drive. I began typing as fast as I could. "Computers online." An agent said from a computer below. "Invisibility temporarily up." Another agent called. "That should hold up until we can get back over water so I can fix and remove remove the virus completely." I said as I turned to face an impressed Nat and a gaping Clint. The Director's face took on a curious expression as he began stroking his goatee.
"Tell me Nadia, have you ever taken an I.Q. test?" Director Fury asked. "Actually Agent Coulson said that he would get me tested for that after I told him what I specialized in." I said calmly. "And what would that be?" Director Fury asked. "Weapons design and a back-up for The Winter Soldier." I stated non-chalantly. "Well how about we finish our earlier conversation while we get the ship a safe distance from the shore." Director Fury said walking down the hallway.
"Hey Nat?" I asked as I realized something important. "Yes Nadia?" She asked concerned. "I just realized something," She looked down at me. "And what's that?"
Before I spoke I stroke a superhero pose,
"I just prevented S.H.I.E.L.D. from being dicovered by the regular population in my pajama's!"
