CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

"When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were things like astronaut, president...Or in my case, princess. When we were ten, they asked again and we answered – rock star, cowboy, or in my case, gold medalist. But now that we've grown up, they want a serious answer. Well, how 'bout this: who the hell knows?!" Jessica tells the crowd of graduating teenagers and angsty parents.

Olivia looks around in slight awe.

A few years ago, she never would have dreamed of making it this far. She had no plans, she never wanted to make plans because she always assumed she wouldn't be here to see them through.

But here she was.

Sat in a small crowd of her peers. Each of them holding a different story, preparing for the next steps of their life.

"This isn't the time to make hard and fast decisions, it's the time to make mistakes. Take the wrong train, and get stuck somewhere chill. Fall in love... a lot. Major in philosophy because there's no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind. Then change it again, because nothing is permanent..."

Olivia looks beside her where her twin sister sits knowing she may be making a life changing decision, hard and fast, that was in no way temporary. Her sister has always been that way though, all in or nothing at all.

"So make as many mistakes as you can. That way, someday, when they ask again what we want to be... we won't have to guess. We'll know."

Olivia walks up to the podium as they announce her name and her face turns a cherry red. Between the packs wolf whistles and the Cullen boys hollering she was completely embarrassed. But she'd be lying if she said it didn't make her feel good that she had so much love surrounding her. She used to think it was a bad thing, it would only hurt you in the end.

Maybe she was right.

But as she looked out into the crowd she saw Jaspers beaming smile, Charlie clapping ecstatically, Edwards smirk, Paul with his hands cupping his mouth, Sam's rare grin... She realized she wouldn't trade them for the world.

How could you be grateful for love if you had never experienced a little hurt?

Olivia joins Bella at the door of the Cullen's home that was currently filled to the brim with crazy teenagers running off the high of graduation. Alice per usual had outdone herself and made it a night no graduate would forget.

Jacob, Quil, Embry, and Paul flank one another as they tensely survey the home.

"What are you doing here?" Bella rudely questions the wolf as Olivia pulls Paul into a hug, soon doing the same with the rest of the boys aside from Jacob.

"You invited me, remember?" Jacob cockily replies.

"Was my right hook too subtle for you? That was me uninviting you." She glares.

"Did you get to see it?" Embry questions Olivia quietly.

Olivia sadly sighs. "No. But I did get to be there when he told Charlie."

Paul snorts. "Even better."

Looking back at the two they see Jacob give the younger Swan a charm bracelet. Olivia turns to Paul sassily. "Where's my present, Pauly?"

Paul pulls her into a fake choke hold. "Someone is a bit moody today, eh?"

"I have to be. Don't know if you heard but I graduated." She smiles.

"Oh, uh." Quil stutters. "Sorry I couldn't be there. Someone had to stay on patrol."

Paul and Embry snicker, the former saying "I don't think she noticed."

Olivia smacks Paul on the arm but gently smiles at Quil. "I noticed but I promise not to hold it against you."

Looking toward the stairs it takes a moment for Olivia to register Alice standing there staring at seemingly nothing. Feeling worry evade her senses she pushes past the group to make her way toward the woman.

"Why? What's going on?" She hears Jacob say behind her but she doesn't pay him any mind.

"Alice, what is it? Is everything okay?" Olivia quietly questions her. She gets slightly pushed aside as Jacob and Bella push their way through.

Paul lets out a quiet growl

"Okay, something is going on. Tell me." Jacob demands.

Alice side eyes him and attempts to make her move to find her family but Jacob steps in front of her. Olivia narrows her eyes at him in annoyance. "Move."

Jasper suddenly appears staring down the wolf. "I suggest you move, before I make you."

Jacob looks like he's still contemplating and Paul takes a step closer to the group. "Jake." He lowly warns. When he finally does move Alice quickly struts away up the stairs and Olivia makes a move to follow her but not before whispering to Jacob. "This is why you don't have a girlfriend."

Jacob rolls his eyes following the rest of the group as they all head into a secluded room.

"The decision's been made." Alice announces but it was really only meant for her families ears.

"What's going on? You're not going to Seattle?" Bella questions confused. Olivia had decided to stand beside Edward when entering the room because she didn't want to start an unnecessary argument with either Paul or Jasper.

"No... They're coming here." Alice solemnly tells the room.

"How long?" Edward questions.

"They'll be here in four days." Alice responds.

Olivia begins to nervously fidget with her hands as a million thoughts run across her mind.

"This could turn into a blood bath." Carlisle looks to the ground, his hatred for killing obvious.

"Who's behind it?" Edward questions, he nudges Olivia with his elbow lightly as her fidgeting gets rougher. Snapping out of her train of thought she looks back up and meets Jasper and Pauls worried gazes.

"I didn't see anyone I recognize. Maybe one..."

"I know his face. He's local, Riley Biers." Edward furrows his brows as he sees Alice's thoughts. Olivia's eyes widen in recognition. "He's been missing for a year now."

"He didn't start this." Edward shakes his head.

Jasper steps forward gaining everyones attention. "Either way, the army is coming... and there aren't enough of us to protect the town."

Jacob quickly stands and interrupts. "Hold on, what damn army?"

Carlisle shares a look with both Edward and Jasper knowing it effects them both. "Newborns. Our kind."

"What are they after?" Embry questions. When everyone remains silent for a moment too long Paul scowls. "It's them isn't it?"

Jasper solemnly nods, wanting nothing more than to go to the brunette and move her half way across the world.

"What the hell does this mean?" Jacob snarls.

"It means an ugly fight. With lives lost." Carlisle is honest.

All of the packs faces drop. Jacob and Paul share a somber glance before looking toward the other two who nod.

"No." Olivia's heart drops.

"Alright... We're in." Jacob announces as he and Paul step forward.

"No. You'll get yourselves killed, no way." Bella denies at the same time Olivia quickly walks to Pauls side. All of the vampires in the room pretend not to notice Jasper looking away with pain in his eyes. "Paul, no."

"Olivia, yes." He sternly responds.

"Do you believe Sam will agree to... an understanding?" Carlisle questions him.

"As long as we get to kill some vampires." Jacob half heartedly grins but both girls are still vehemently denying their participation. Jacob looks at the girl with snark. "Really think about it, Olivia. Your Paul's imprint, do you truly think the pack can stay out of an army of vampires coming to kill you? We couldn't even if we wanted to."

"Watch it dog." Jasper snaps as he watches tears well in her eyes.

"I won't let you sacrifice yourselves because of some bond!" She argues. Paul's eyes darken and Edward outwardly winces from across the room. "It's not just some bond, Liv. You became my whole entire world the moment I imprinted on you. If the pack refused to fight I would go myself. I would do anything to protect you."

Alice and Emmett both quickly make their way to Jasper's side as his eyes darken and his lip snarls.

"Jasper?" Carlisle questions, not only to snap him out of his rage but also questioning the packs participation.

Jasper doesn't respond until Olivia turns toward him hopefully. He sighs. "They'll give us the numbers. And the newborns won't know they even exist. That'll give us an edge."

"Carlisle, they're gonna get hurt." Bella pleads the patriarch.

He purses his lips. "We'll all need some training. Fighting newborns requires knowledge that Jasper has. You're welcome to join us."

"Name the time and place." Jacob smirks. Less than a minute later the pack leaves the home to take their leave and Olivia hurriedly follows them out. "Paul!"

He gestures for the remainder of the wolves to take their leave to the truck they had arrived in as he pauses his steps for her. "I don't want to fight with you, Liv."

"I don't want you to fight." .

"You can't stop me." He shrugs.

"Please. I don't know what I would do if I lost you." She pleads, throwing her hands in the air. "You're my best friend, Paul. Don't make me lose you."

"You know.." He harshly laughs. "I don't know if I should take it as a compliment or an insult that you haven't asked the same thing of that blood sucker."

"Don't do that." She sadly shakes her head. "This has nothing to do with Jasper."

"You're so sure I will die if I fight." He scoffs.

"It's not that I don't believe in you, I can't stand the thought of you dying because of me. Of all of you risking your lives because I got involved with vampires. None of you deserve that."

"Regardless of you or Bella we have a duty to our tribe to protect our land. And an army of blood thirsty vampires is more than enough to make us fight." He tries to lessen her guilt.

"Please don't do this." Olivia harshly sighs.

Paul exhales, he gives her a kiss on the head before turning around and leaving.

Olivia watches their truck pull away into the forest with a frown.

"They'll be okay." A voice from behind her says.

Olivia whips around and deflates as she realizes it was only Edward.

"You can't know that." She grumbles as she kicks a rock.

"I know that when you have something to fight for you're a lot more likely to do anything to come home."

"Unless you're Edward Cullen." She pokes. "Then you just move across the world with out another word and cut off all communication."

Edward's face falls. "Olivia.."

"Don't bother." She walks off.

"I wish I wasn't so useless." Olivia stares at her ceiling in disdain.

"You're anything but." Jasper promises.

She turns her head toward him in disbelief. "An army of vampires are coming to kill me and everyone but me is doing something useful."

"All I need you to do is to stay alive." He tells her softly.

"I need everyone to be okay."

"We will be okay as long as you are."

"I don't get it." She sniffles.

Jasper slightly sits up so that he can see her more clearly. "Get what?"

"Why everyone is willing to risk their lives for me. A simple human."

He quickly cups her face. "Don't you get it darling? You're the most important person in my world. I waited decades to find you, I made a mistake leaving Forks. But I am never leaving you again, not until you ask me to."
