CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

Olivia quietly sits at the dining room table with her father as she picks at her plate and he focusses on the newspaper.

"You don't need to sit with me at the table until I finish my food, dad." She quietly murmurs, not looking up at him.

Charlie's eyes widen for a small second before he coughs. "I don't know what you mean, Liv. A man can't sit and read his newspaper nowadays?"

Olivia jokingly scoffs. "Please, dad. The lazy boy in the living room has your body imprinted into it and i'm sure theres a newspaper or two stuffed in between the cushions."

Charlie lightly chuckles before his face turns solemn. "I just want to be here for you, Liv. I want to be more present. If I had before maybe..."

Olivia grabs his hand and assuringly squeezes it. "You've been a great dad. Present. I'm sorry for putting you through this."

"They say real fatherhood doesn't start until the teenage years." Charlie mutters.

Olivia mockingly nods. "Oh, yes."

Just then the front door slowly opens and his face drops as he checks his watch. Olivia goes back to looking down at her plate not wanting to interact with her sister still. "Four o'clock on the dot. Does he have a stopwatch or something?"

"He has a name. And now he's too punctual for you?" Bella sighs as she looks to her sister only to be ignored and starts her way up the stairs. Before she gets to far Charlie calls her back and tells her to take a seat.

Olivia sighs quietly as she realizes she was going to have to be in a room with her sister and Charlie was definitely not allowing her to leave this plate. "Okay... You understand why you're being punished, right?" He starts.

"I know, I put you through hell." Bella looks away with a guilty expression.

Their father nods his head. "Yes, you did. But I have other reasons, for grounding you. Like... I just want you to get some separation from him."

Bella's head snaps up in alarm. "Dad, there is nothing you can say. Edward is in my life."

Olivia scoffs under her breath.

Charlie sighs but nods. "Yeah, I'm gathering that. So, alright. How about this? I'll make you a deal. You're not grounded anymore, if... You use your new found freedom... ... to see some of your other friends too, Like... Like Jacob. He's going through a really tough time right now, His Dad's really worried about him. I remember when that was you. You needed a friend, Jake was there."

When she doesn't respond Olivia hesitantly peaks her head up from her plate and notices her sister deep in thought with a small frown marring her face. Olivia knew how Jake was.

He was a wreck.

She didn't understand his obsession with her sister. Of course regardless of her current feelings for her sister she knows she's beautiful and had a one of a kind personality and loyalty. But she had rejected Jake so many times or so blatantly picked someone else over him that she almost wanted to give him a standing ovation for his consistency.

Not to mention that when he became a shapeshifter and did not imprint on Bella it should have been an immediate switch. That should've been the only confirmation that she was not his soulmate. The woman he would grow old with.

Even with the imprint, that would not guarantee they were meant to be anything more than friends.

Speaking of imprints.

Paul had been very cautious with her ever since the incident. He never wanted to leave her side, so much that Sam had to assign him extra patrol shifts just to give her space to breathe. She told him that Jasper knew and he was convinced that the vampire would lose control and hurt her.

She denied it. No matter what had happened between the two she knew he would keep himself away from her if he had even an inkling that he may lash out on her. That was the meaning of all of this.

Paul on the other hand... Her body shook with the thought of those two meeting face to face one day. Her imprint and her mate.

She could go her whole life with out that meeting.

Olivia walks past the table of Edward, Bella, Alice, Jasper, and all of her friends without a glance, missing her twin staring at her solemnly.

"Liv!" Someone shouts.

Olivia shuts her eyes tightly, praying the ground would swallow her whole. Was it too much to ask for everyone to let her be alone?

"Liv!"

The answer was yes.

She hesitantly turns around, avoiding all of the vampires intense gazes. "Mike." She quietly greets hoping he would get the hint that she did indeed, not want to talk.

"Come sit!" He jumps up to take her shoulders and shove her toward the table. Coincidentally, the only space available was in a chair beside Jasper.

She slowly seats herself not looking away from her plate.

"So, Swan." Mike begins. "We haven't seen you in a while. Heard you were in the hospital, whats up with that?"

Jessica scoffs in disbelief at the mans audacity. "Mike!"

"What?" He obliviously questions.

Olivia's face blushes a slight red and she drops her fork. Opening her mouth she sputters for a response but someone beats her to it.

"Sick." Jasper's deep voice is heard. "Caught a bad flu and she was majorly dehydrated."

Olivia reluctantly looks up toward him and she quietly gasps as their eyes meet.

They were the brightest shade of amber she had ever seen.

Becoming disinterested in the conversation, Mike looks down to Jessica's paper in hand. "My fellow students. Cool. Right? Wow. Okey, right? Cute. We are the future. Anything is possible... If you just believe."

"Nice." Angela groans.

"Eat." Jasper softly tells her, his eyes flickering between her and her full tray.

Olivia looks down to fiddle with her fingers. Taking a peak around at the table she notices they're all occupied with talks about graduation. She knows Edward and Alice will hear her but she was used to the intrusion by now. "You are.. uh talking to me?'

Jasper raises his eyebrow. "Should I not be, darling?"

Olivia's stomach flutters but she clears her throat in attempts of stomping on the never ending butterflies. Oh how for so many months she wished to hear that little nickname.

About the same amount of months she spent with a broken heart.

"Well.." She clears her throat. "The last time we talked I told you.."

"We don't need to say it." Jasper interrupts lowly.

Edward and Alice send him a glance that he ignores.

"Can I visit you tonight?" He questions once he gathers himself. Seeing her hesitance he lowers his head. "I would like to talk about.. it. I apologize for disappearing."

Olivia analyzes his face and ends up slowly nodding.

"I decided to throw a party." Alice enthusiastically tells the group.

Olivia's eyes widen as she shifts her eyes back and fourth between the Cullens.

"After all, how many times we gonna graduate high school?" Jasper drawls, making Edward smirk. Olivia almost gapes. Since when did the blonde joke so publicly with humans around?

"A-a party? At your place?" Angela stutters.

"I've never seen your house."

"No one's ever seen their house.

"Another party, Alice?" Edward unconsciously grits his teeth as he glances Olivia's way.

"It'll be fun." She tells him stubbornly.

"Yeah. That's what you said last time." Bella sighs.

Opening her mouth to respond, Alice suddenly freezes and if you paid close enough attention her eyes looked slightly glazed over.

"Well cool, that's really uh... normal of you. What time?" Mike questions. When she doesn't answer he tries again. "Dress code?"

"Bring anything? Cheetos?"

Olivia watches the whole thing with a nervous glance. It didn't take a genius to realize something was going on with Alice.

"Wake up, Alice." Edward coughs.

"She hasn't been getting much sleep lately, senior jitters." Jasper smoothly lies and it seems to satiate the rest of the humans at the table as they continue their conversation.

Olivia tries to catch his eyes with her own after that but he avoided her as she noticed Edward was on edge after Alice had come back to earth. She knew he could hear her thoughts so if she was having a vision he would know exactly what she saw.

Olivia is scribbling in one of her math books when she hears the small creek from the window. She doesn't look up until she finishes her sentence knowing exactly who had creeped in. And when she does she's at a loss for words. "I don't know what to say."

Jasper looks deep in thought as he leans against the wall looking toward the floor. "You said you weren't in love with him." He states.

Olivia gulps. Straight into the deep end she supposed. "I am not in love with him."

"But you... were with him?" His face looks as if he swallowed something sour.

"I was." She whispers in response.

"Why?"

Olivia slightly squirms where she is seated and she looks away from him. "I uh.. I think I owed it to him. To myself as well to see if there was anything there."

Jasper stays silent.

"Y-you left me." Olivia tells him, as if he didn't regret it every day. "You left me but the pack... They were there for me day in and day out. I can't just abandon them and jump back into your arms."

"Do you still love me?" Jasper intensely stares at her. "Let me rephrase, darling. Are you still in love with me?"

Olivia stands from her bed and leans against the wall opposite of him. "You can't just stop loving someone because they hurt you, Jasper."

"That's not what I asked."

"I-" Olivia takes a deep breath. "Yes."

Jasper steps away from the wall and closer to her. "Say it."

The silence is deafening.

"I am still in love with you." She whispers so quiet that if he weren't a vampire he wouldn't have heard it.

Olivia blinks and gasps as he's suddenly in front of her, towering over her body. She tilts her head back to meet his eyes that have darkened considerably. "I will never give up on you, Olivia Swan. I will win you back." He promises.

Olivia's eyes flutter the closer his forehead meets her own. "You're not mad at me?"

Jasper lightly rubs his nose against hers. "Not you. Never you."

Olivia nods and has to use any common sense left in her brain to take a step away from him. Jasper inaudibly sighs but doesn't comment on it knowing he knew to earn her trust back.

"What was Alice's vision?" She questions in attempts to clear the tension. "Today in the cafeteria."

Jasper subtly shifts but she notices. "Jasper."

"Nothing important, darling." He shakes his head.

"Lying is not a good start to gaining my trust back." She responds in annoyance as she crosses her arms.

"I don't want you to worry."

The door downstairs can be heard closing. "Before I leave, I was supposed to mention that those plane tickets Esme and Carlisle got you and Bella for your birthdays will be expiring soon. Edward wants Bella to use them this weekend. I figured you may want to see Renee again."

Olivia shakes her head. "No. I am not going with Bella and Edward."

Jasper gives her an understanding nod.

"And besides... I already have plans." When he tilts his head prompting her to continue she sheepishly responds. "With the pack."

Jasper releases an annoyed grunt but gives her a strained smile. "Perfect."

Olivia helps Emily start dinner by setting the table for the boys and filling all of their cups with water. "So Liv..." Embry starts. "How's it been with all of the blood suckers back in town?"

"Embry." Sam warns him.

He throws his hands up in defense. "I am just asking what we're all thinking!"

"It's been fine." Olivia quietly responds not wanting to get much further into it than that with the boys.

"Don't worry, Liv." Jared jokes as he throws an arm over her shoulder. "Paul will be done with patrol soon and Embry will learn to keep his mouth shut."

"Ha! Ha!" Embry groans as he stuffs a pancake into his mouth. "As if! All Paul ever thinks of when we're shifted is of Olivia and the Cullens. That's why he and Jake got stuck on patrol together."

Olivia's eyes shift to Sam questionably, he purses his lips not wanting to reveal anything.

"Stop teasing Embry, or I will make sure to serve everyone food before you." Emily threatens and the boy quickly shuts his mouth. Olivia giggles, not noticing all of those around her faintly smile. So much had been happening in the girls life that they could all tell it had taken it's toll. Her recent trip to the hospital had been a clear indication.

"Any plans besides us for the weekend?" Emily curiously questions the girl.

Olivia shakes her head. "No, Bella went to Florida to see our mom and Charlie has been stuck at the station with a case as of lately so I am all yours."

"That's how we like it." Emily jokes.

Sam, Jared, and Embry's head all snap toward the window as two distant howls can be heard in the distance. Olivia knows one of them is Paul and her chest tightens with worry.

"Let's go." Sam commands them them both and they quickly head for the door. Right before he leaves he gives Emily and kiss on the forehead and sternly tells the two. "Stay in the house."

Both girls are silent for a moment as they watch the men shift into their wolf and disappear into the forest. Emily sighs and glances toward all of the food she had just set out. "We can eat and then pack away everything for when they all get back, I am sure they'll be starving."

Olivia nods. "I'm worried Emily." She admits.

Emily gives her an understanding small smile. "I am too, Liv. It's normal, they're our imprints. Whether or not you and Paul come together romantically the imprint still matters all the same."

"I-I.. don't see him that way." When she says it she almost feels guilty and Emily quickly assures the girl. "Thats okay! And he will be okay with it too, from what Sam has told me when you imprint on someone you are willing to be anything they need you to be. Happily."

"Doesn't that feel kind of... Horrible?" Olivia scrunches her face. "I mean one day if I decided to be something more he'd be okay with it and then if I change my mind the next he would have to be... okay with it?"

Emily throws her head back and laughs as they take their seats at the table. "Now, now.. I don't think the imprint creates feelings for someone, Liv. I think it amplifies what's already there. Like a connection you have with someone as a human only now their wolf is connected to the human as well. Anyways, thats the way I see it."

Olivia nervously chews on her lip and Emily grabs her hand. "Paul will be okay."

She snaps her head toward Emily's knowing expression. "He's your mate, Olivia. Most of us don't expect you to ignore that. Deep down, I don't think Paul does either."

"I never wanted to hurt anyone." Olivia whispers.

"I have told you about Sam and I's story?" Emily questions, she nods. "We never wanted to hurt anyone either. But imagine if we just ignored each other to try and save everyone a little hurt. You can't hold yourself back from something that could be so amazing, for someone else's benefit. Eventually, they will move on and they will be okay."

"Thank you, Em." Olivia tells her sincerely. Emily had showed her what it was like to have a true friend.

And she would cherish their friendship forever.

"Liv. Liv, wake up." She hears a deep whisper lightly shake her.

Groggily opening her eyes she looks around in confusion. "Paul? I'm sorry, did I fall asleep?"

She remembered her and Emily lounging on the couch watching a movie waiting for the pack to come back. She must have fallen asleep.

"It's alright, we're just getting back. Sam took Emily to bed." He rubs her back as she yawns. "I should be taking you home though."

Olivia nods, as she stands she stretches her arms out and observes Paul. He was still shirtless but it wasn't until now she realizes how tense he looked. "Is everything okay?"

"Let's talk in the car." Paul wraps a blanket back around her shoulders as he guides her toward the door. "I don't want to wake Emily up."

Once they settle in the car it takes a few minutes for Olivia to break the silence. "Will you tell me what's wrong?"

"That red head, Victoria. She's back." Paul grabs her hand from her lap in a comforting manner when he notices her tense. "That's why the others had to join Jake and I. She was on our land."

Olivia groans into the blanket. "Why can't she just leave."

"I won't let anything happen to you. The pack won't let anything happen to you." He tries to comfort her but she only huffs. "I don't care about any of that. I just want her gone. She's an inconvenience for everyone here."

"There's also something else I should probably tell you.." He releases her hand and tightens his grip around the steering wheel as he remembered Sam telling her it would be better she heard it from him. "While we were chasing her tonight she was running along the treaty line.."

"The Cullens." Olivia closes her eyes.

"They came onto our land." Paul grunts as he clenches his jaw. "The big one first and when I went to shove him back-"

"Let me guess." Olivia turns to him with an unamused expression. "Blonde hair, tall, southern accent."

Paul nods. "I'm going to guess that he knows."

Olivia's face slightly heats up and she looks out the window. "Yes."

"Everything?"

"Everything."

"You know... I am okay with us being friends, right? You were my friend long before anything else came along." He tells her, still staring forward. "Before either of us knew that the supernatural world was real. Before I became a shifter."

"Thank you, Paul." She smiles at him. "You know I'll always need you in my life right?"

"I'm never leaving you, Swan." He smiles back as they catch each others eyes.
