CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE

Olivia exits the home with Emily just as Leah had shifted and ran off and offers her sister an awkward, tense smile. She didn't know if she and her sister would ever be as close as they once were.

"Fun, isn't she?" Jacob sarcastically comments.

Emily gives the Swan sister a hug as Sam nods hello. "Bella... Hi. Hey. I was wondering when we'd see your face around here again."

"Yeah, same here." Bella awkwardly nods.

"Sam, we're good?" Jacob questions the Alpha. Olivia winces as she realizes Jacob is probably the one who told Bella. She hadn't seen Jasper since the treaty line incident and she wasn't sure what to say about it.

"We're good. She won't be getting through our line anytime soon." Sam confidently tells the man.

Right behind him Olivia is making faces and overly dramatic gestures like puffing out her chest or flexing her arms and Emily giggles. Hearing this, Sam turns around and raises an amused brow at Olivia who sheepishly looks away. "Mhm." He grunts and shakes his head.

"I am going to take Olivia home." Emily informs Sam and he nods.

"Are you ever going to get your license?" Jake's lips quirk as he questions the girl.

"I hope not." Sam scoffs and Olivia smacks his arm in retaliation.

"Olivia, get up!'" Edward slightly shakes the girl.

Olivia groans and smacks his arm away. "What the hell?"

"You have to get up. We need to leave the house." He urgently tells her again.

Groggily sitting up Olivia rubs her eyes. "Why are you in my room?"

Edward grunts in annoyance and throws her her jacket. "Let's go."

"I am not going anywhere with you, I am sleeping." She glares at him, angry he had woken her up at god knows what time.

"Someone has been in your house, someone was in here. In your room." He spits out, anger engulfing his at the thought of his protected in danger.

With her eyes finally adjusting from the sleep she notices his eyes several shades darker than they usually are and finally takes in the reality of the situation. "Oh, ok. Getting up."

Olivia sits on the couch in the Cullen's living room in the middle of the night half asleep, barely listening to the conversation going on.

"Who was it? Someone we know?" Alice questions.

Edward shakes his head as he paces. "Just a stranger. I didn't recognize his scent."

"A nomad passing through?" Esme questions slightly hopeful.

"A passer-by wouldn't have left Bella's father alive or Olivia." Rosalie immediately disagrees.

"Lovely." Olivia mutters to herself, only partially forgetting she's in a room full of vampires that can hear her own heart beat let alone her whispers.

Jasper bursts into the home with wild eyes, only settling slightly when he notices the brunette wrapped in a blanket on the couch with droopy eyes. "His scent disappeared about five miles south of the house."

"Someone's orchestrating this." Edward says.

Jasper takes a seat next to the older Swan on the couch visually searching her body for any signs of injury.

"You're here." Olivia tiredly mumbles.

Jasper lifts his hand to remove the hair from her face but lowers it, unsure of how she felt about him right now. Especially because he purposely hadn't reached out since the treaty incident. "I'm here."

"Victoria?" Carlisle suggests but was shot down due to Alice's visions.

"It has to be the Volturi." Edward says.

"I don't think it's the Volturi either. I've been watching Aro's decisions, too." Alice argues.

"So we keep looking." Emmett tells the group sternly. The two Swan's had quickly become an important part of their family and he had seen what it did to his two brothers to be separated form them.

"We also take shifts, guarding the girls at their house." Carlisle tells the group but Rosalie scoffs. "Another protection detail?"

"Heck no." Olivia slightly awakens. "I am not asking you guys to spend all of your free time guarding the house, no way."

"Olivia." Jasper lowly warns.

"No, she's right. You can't protect me, watch my dad, watch Olivia... and search for the intruder. And for Victoria. And keep yourselves fed." Bella worriedly tells the group.

"I'm not leaving you here defenseless. Or you." Edward tells the two girls firmly.

"Well, I'm not gonna let you starve. And we wouldn't be unprotected, we have..." Bella pauses, meeting her sisters eyes that flash with hesitant understanding. Olivia inwardly winces as Jasper's body tenses. Olivia hesitantly places her hand on top of his own.

Jasper's eyes snap to her own and she can swear she watches his eyes lighten. He turns his palm around and intertwines their fingers giving her a small nod.

"What?" Edward questions cluelessly but knew he wouldn't like it based on the looks of everyone elses faces. As Paul crosses Olivia's mind he scoffs. "No."

The next morning Jasper and Edward stand outside the Swan residence impatiently waiting for the girls to come back outside.

Finally, Bella, Jacob, Paul, and Olivia exit the home.

"Whoever it was, he left his stink behind. It'll be hard to miss when we cross it again. We'll handle it from here." Jacob arrogantly tells the two as he crosses his arms. Paul stands beside him glaring both men down.

Olivia looks to the ground as she quickly realizes that this will turn into an argument in no time.

"We don't need you to handle anything, Or anyone." Edward grits out quietly, though his anger is mainly focussed at Jacob.

"I could care less what you need." Jacob lowly growls.

Paul meets Olivia's eyes and at her pleading ones he hesitantly takes a step back. He would do anything he could to protect his imprint, but her pleading eyes were telling him it didn't mean he had to start a fight especially with her right there. In Olivia's opinion, Jasper and Paul's anger is far worse than Jacob and Edwards.

"Alright, we're done here." Edward demands and Jacob immediately counters him.

Olivia watches as her sister jumps in between them and attempts to seperate the two. "Stop. I'm tired of this. From now on I'm Switzerland, Okay? I don't expect you guys to chuck a football around together. Fine. But we have a lot of problems. And this is one temporary solution. Are you willing to at least try?"

It's completely still for a moment as both men stare at one another, sizing each other up. Finally, they both nod. All eyes turn to Paul and Jasper. Edward eyes them both, hearing both of their conflicting thoughts but the one thing that is mutual in both minds is doing whats best for Olivia and not stressing her any further.

Olivia looks between the two hopeful and neither man has it in them to deny her. They reluctantly nod.

Once everything is decided Olivia heads back into the house and enters her room. She's not even surprised when she sees the blonde waiting on her bed. "I saw you get into the car and leave?"

"I jumped out when we hit the backroads." He confesses.

Olivia purses her lips in attempts to hold back a giggle. "Thank you."

He raises a curious brow at her. "Why are you thanking me, darling?"

Olivia looks toward her hands as she begins to nervously fidget. "For not fighting with Paul... I know it must not be easy."

"It's not." Jasper admits as he stands from the bed to make his way to her. "But, it is easier knowing you're not in love with him."

Olivia turns her head away from him to hide her blush as her eyes widen. "Ok, ok, ok."

His lips lift in a half smirk. "Olivia Swan being shy? This is new."

She half heartedly glares at him. "Get out."

"There she is."

Olivia sits around the fire with a water bottle in hand avoiding the hot dog Paul was currently trying to hand feed her. "Here comes the airplane, Liv."

"Paul!" She scowls as she swerves her head away from the incoming hotdog.

"I'll eat it!" Seth eagerly shouts as he attempts to reach for it. Paul smacks away his hand scolding the younger boy. "No, this is for Olivia."

"I told you i'm not hungry." She insists.

"You should eat something." Sam tells the girl firmly. They had all seen how she had wasted away, and he and Paul had been with her in the hospital. It wasn't a sight he ever wanted to see again.

"Alpha's orders." Paul smirks victoriously.

"Leave her alone, boys." Emily tells the two as she takes a seat besides the Swan.

"Emily's orders." Olivia smiles smugly at the two who grumble in response.

Seth suddenly runs away from the group to greet the two new arrivals. Olivia's smile slightly drops when she sees her sister and Jacob. Emily nudges her arm. "Still not talking?"

"No, theres not much to talk about." Olivia shrugs.

"I know she messed up, Liv." Emily frowns at the thought of what had happened on the cliff not too long ago. Her gaze slowly drifts to Leah. "But at the end of the day you're family. She made a mistake and it'll hurt you more to hold a grudge against her."

Paul throws an arm around the girl and squeezes her into his side breaking the tender moment. "Liv has me, what more could she ask for?"

"A boyfriend."

"Everything."

"Anything."

Emily, Sam, and even Leah respond immediately.

Olivia throws her head back with laughter at the boys offended face. Looking back up at the fire she accidentally meets her sisters eyes and she gives her a small nod. She knew she couldn't realistically be mad at her forever, but that wasn't something you just get over.

"The Quileutes have been a small tribe from the beginning..." Billy, Jacobs dad, starts. "But we've always had magic in our blood. We were great spirit warriors... Shape shifters, that transform into the powerful wolf. This enabled us to scare off our enemies, and protect our tribe."

The aura of the fire almost seems daunting, Paul throws a blanket over the Swan's shoulders that he had brought for her and pulls her into his side.

"One day our warriors came across a creature...It looked like a man, but it was hard like stone, and cold as ice..." Olivia feels Paul tense and realizes all of the shifters had made some type of movement. In this moment she realizes that it's not just a hatred they carry for vampires because they are biased. It's truly in their DNA to hate the creatures.

"Our warriors' sharp teeth, finally tore it apart... But only fire would completely destroy it. They lived in fear, the Cold Man was not alone. And they were right. She took her vengeance out on the village. Our elder chief, Taha Aki, was the only spirit warrior left to save the tribe, after his son was killed.Taha Aki's Third Wife could sees that he would lose..."

Olivia's breath hitches as she imagines Paul in a similar situation. It's not that far fetched, between Victoria and the unknown nomad in her home it the odds of him running into a vampire with out the pack was not all that crazy. It's not that she doubts him, but anything can happen. She worriedly lifts her head to look up at him and squeezes his arm.

"The Third Wife was no magical being, no special powers, but one... Courage. The Third Wife's sacrifice distracted the Cold Woman, long enough for Taha Aki to destroy her. She saved the tribe."

For Jasper, for Paul, hell even Edward. She would gladly sacrifice herself to ensure their safety.

"Over time, our enemies have disappeared. But one remains... The Cold Ones. Our magic awakens when they near. And we sense it now, we feel the threat in our blood. Something terrible is coming. And we must all be ready. All of us." Billy specifically gazes at the Swan twins a little longer than the rest of the group.

"You'll be okay." Paul promises in her ear.

"So will you." She whispers.

"Seattle is in a state of terror...Police are baffled by the escalating murders and disappearances. Theories range from a vicious new gang to a wildly active serial killer... Reporting live, Dawn Chubai. CNN."

"It's getting worse. We're going to have to do something." Carlisle tells his family solemnly.

"It takes more than one of our kind to cause the damage they're reporting. Quite a few more. They're undisciplined, conspicuous..." Jasper hints to the rest of the vampires in the room ignoring the girl's curious glances.

"Newborns." Edward states.

Olivia scrunches her nose. "Are they seriously called that?"

Bella looks around. "What, like new vampires?"

"That's when we're at our most uncontrollable, vicious, insane with thirst." Jasper tells the two. Olivia frowns as she thinks about Jasper's experience as a newborn.

"Something to look forward to." Emmett smirks at the two and Olivia's face drops.

"No one has trained these newborns, but this isn't random." Jasper says.

"Someone's creating an army."

Emmett jumps up to his feet with the excitement of a toddler. "Oh, now we're definitely going to Seattle."

"I'm sorry, did you just say an army? As in an army of new born vampires. The next city over? Like right there?" Olivia's eyes widen with slight panic at the thought. Jasper frowns as her worry hits him like a train. He attempts to alter her emotions but per usual it doesn't help much while she's awake.

"And they've been created to fight someone." Jasper confirms.

"We're the only clan even close to Seattle." Edward furrows his eyebrows.

"Regardless, of who are they were made to fight, if we don't put a stop to them, the Volturi will. I'm surprised they've let it go on this long." Carlisle muses.

"Maybe they're behind it. In Italy, I read Aro's mind...He wants me and Alice to join him... Our gifts would shore up his power. He also wanted.." Edward starts but Jasper sharply cuts him off. "He knows you'd never choose him as long as our family is still alive."

Both men share a tense glance.

"An army could solve that for him."

"We can't wait two weeks for graduation; you need to change me now!" Bella stands and begins to pace. Olivia scoffs to herself, feeling her anger build. "You'd be a liability as a newborn. Unable to control your instincts. An easy target." Seeing Olivia's response Jasper is quick to cut in.

Carlisle places a comforting hand on the younger Swan's shoulder. "There's also your father to consider. And your mother. How terrible would it be for them if you suddenly disappeared?" His eyes drift to the elder sister. "And your sister."

Bella's head snaps toward her sisters almost forgetting she was even there as she stares at her speechless.

"Do you want me to turn?" Olivia whispers into the night as she lays in bed that night. "Eventually, would you ask that of me?"

Jasper is silent for a moment, attempting to gage her feelings but he's unable to pin point one. "If that's what you truly want, then one day I would be honored to spend eternity with you darling."

"And... If I never want it?"

Jasper purses his lips. Truthfully he had spent many nights plagued by his thoughts of a future where Olivia doesn't exists or condemning her to a life of blood thirst. "I would gladly spend the rest of your mortal life by your side. I won't say I will end my own life if that's what you choose because I know you'd feel trapped. Whatever choice you make, I want it to be what you truly want."

"Thank you, Jazz."

"For what, darling?" He runs a hand through her hair gently.

"Being you."
