CHAPTER FIVE
Olivia is now sitting in a hospital bed with a bored expression as her younger twin frantically checks her over and over for injuries.
"Bella stop. I'm fine." Olivia smacks her hand away in annoyance.
"This is impossible." Bella whispers in disbelief. "It's impossible."
Charlie comes rushing into the room in a panic. "Olivia! Baby are you okay?!"
"Yes I'm fine." She rolls her eyes.
"You and I are going to have a talk later." He warns the boy who was driving the van.
"Dad it wasn't his fault." Bella is the one to attempt to defend the boy.
"To hell if it isn't!" Charlie shouts. "Your sister could've died Bella."
"I've got this one Jackie!" A pale looking doctor says coming into the room.
"Dr. Cullen. Thank god, how is she looking?" Charlie questions the pale man.
Olivia watches Bella curiously study the older man and can practically see the gears turning in her head as she realizes who her doctor is.
"She's got a small bump on her forehead but no major injuries." He says looking between the three. Mostly glancing at the older Swan twin in confusion. "You were lucky."
"If it wasn't for Edward she could've died. He saved her." Bella gushes and carefully watches the doctors reaction.
Olivias face remains impassive though she watches her sister in her peripheral vision, wondering if she also thought something was weird with the Cullen children.
"Edward? Aint that your boy?" Charlie questions Carlisle.
The doctor simply sends him a tense nod and leaves the room rather quickly.
"I'm going to go sign some papers." Charlie announces in the silence. "You should call your mom."
"You told mom?!" Bella accuses him.
"I'm good." Olivia says at the same time. She wasn't going to call her mom. She would keep her on the phone for hours probably wailing.
She gets up and leaves the room to adventure around the hospital.
After a few minutes of boredom she walks back towards the reception desk to see if she was allowed to leave but instead almost runs into a fuming Edward.
"What? Are you going to question me too?" He accuses in an angry tone.
"I don't care enough to question your super human strength." She shrugs, walking past the vampire. She assumed her sister had confronted the boy.
"You don't seem the least bit bothered." Edward seethes. "Don't you care that you almost died?"
"You should've let the van hit me." She says so seriously that he almost flinches.
"Does your life mean nothing to you?" He says getting angry all over again.
"Does it mean something to you?" She deflects with a raised brow.
"No..." He mutters frustratedly and storms past her.
"Drama queen." She scoffs and walks towards her father and sister.
Edward sits at the dining room table with all of his family members.
"I apologize." He says not really sincere. "I'll take full responsibility."
"Full responsibility!" Rosalie fumes, smacking Emmett's hand away as he attempts to calm her down. "This effects us all. I say we take care of the problem. Humans die in their sleep all the time."
"You would know all about assassination wouldn't you Rosalie!" Edward fumes at the thought of her killing either Swan.
"We're not killing her!" Jasper growls at his adoptive sister.
"It's not like you actually care about her!" Rosalie yells at Jasper. Looking towards Edward she continues her verbal assault. "She's not even your mate."
"She's my mate! Of course I care about her." Jasper glares, only being held back by Alice and Esme incase he decided to pounce.
"Enough." Carlisle sternly says. "Were not killing an innocent girl Rosalie."
"You either kill her or her and Bella will be one of us one day." Alice says as she comes out of her daze that no one had realized she entered.
"No!" Edward and Jasper both growl protectively.
"I've seen it happen." Alice defends herself.
"She won't say anything." Edward begs the rest of his family.
"Why are you so attached to my mate!" Jasper accuses.
"Boys!" Carlisle attempts to calm them both down. "I've been doing a little research and I think I know why Edward feels so protective over Olivia Swan."
"It's very rare and unheard of but I think Edward is Olivias Protector." Carlisle says calmly.
"What is that?" Emmett questions seriously. "Besides the obvious."
"It is said that sometimes when someone goes through something seriously traumatic that they gain a protecter." He explains as Edward and Jasper listen intently, hanging onto the doctors every word. "The protecter will stop at nothing to protect them from whatever evil they're facing. There are legends that say this happens as natures way of keeping the balance between good and evil. "
"Evil they're facing?" Edward mumbles in confusion. "What is that supposed to mean, Carlisle?"
"Whatever traumatized the person in the first place, someone who goes through something very traumatic is very likely to develop poor mental health." Carlisle finishes.
"She's traumatized?" Jasper questions sadly, letting his guard drop for a second.
"I don't know if you guys have noticed but when she was sitting in the hospital she was very... numb from what I noticed." Carlisle voices his observations. "She was studying every detail of the room, she watched everyone's movements, but she head no usual tell tales."
"What do you mean Carlisle?" Rosalie speaks up for the first time since the earlier argument.
"People who have suffered trauma in general always have tell tale signs." He motions with his hands. "Whether it's major agitation, fidgeting of the hands, violent tendencies, being more shy than average people... but nothing. She was just blank."
"When I try to read her mind I get this sudden pounding headache." Edward confesses to his father figure. "It hurts me to read her thoughts. I don't even get small fragments of what she's thinking. Just bursts of headaches."
"It could be her gift if she were to ever turn." Esme says as more of a question.
"I can't read or feel her emotions." Jasper adds in with furrowed eyebrows.
"Let's just keep an eye on her." Carlisle concludes. Looking towards Rosalie as he makes his next comment. "She is staying Alive."
The next morning everyone was getting ready to load onto the buses for their school field trip to the green house. Bella stood near her sister quietly until they're interrupted by Mike. "Hey! I was just wondering you know, if you don't have a date for the dance... if you would go with me?" He questions hopefully.
Though Olivia could tell her sister wasn't paying the boy any attention. Instead she was staring at Edward Cullen.
"What?" Bella sheepishly questions when she notices him waving a hand in her face.
"Will you... go to prom? With me?" He says shyly but hopefully.
"I-I can't." She stammers out, searching her brain for an excuse. "I'm going to Jacksonville that weekend."
"Can't you go another time?" Mike suggests as his face slowly falls.
"Non refundable." Octavia says blankly as Bella sends her a discreet thankful glance.
Mike winces when he meets the stare of the eldest Swan. "You should ask Jessica!" Bella points out.
"You think she would say yes?" He says with a new found look of hope on his face, though he still looked upset by Bella's rejection.
"Definitely." Bella assures with a small smile.
After Mike leaves the two alone, they begin to walk into their bus. Bella steps on first only for Olivia to be stopped by the bus driver. "Sorry miss, the bus is full. You'll have to go to the other one."
Bella immediately offers to go in place of her in worries of her sister getting upset. But Olivia simply walks away with out even saying goodbye.
Walking onto the only other bus that had open spots she notices all of the other kids already seated. There was conveniently only one open spot. Next to Jasper Hale.
She walks towards the open seat and doesn't even give the male a simple glance as she takes her seat.
"Hello." Jasper says tensely.
He gets frustrated when he once again only gets a nod in return. From next to them Edward and Alice watch the girls every move.
Alice sends him an encouraging look making him sigh. "What's in Jacksonville?"
Turning towards him with a raised brow she speaks. "You were eaves dropping on my sisters conversation."
"I walked by and I heard." He lies.
"I'm sure you did Hale." She sarcastically remarks.
Jaspers face slightly lights up when she uses his last name as a nickname for him. That had to be some type of progress right? He's read that humans develop nicknames for people they are bonding with.
"What do you mean?" He questions curiously, seeing as she used sarcasm in her statement.
"You were near the other bus which was a solid twenty feet away, near your siblings Edward, Alice, and Rosalie." She finishes with a straight face.
All three vampires tense after her statement. Was she really that observant?
"Not to worry." She says making eye contact with all three of them. Letting them know she knew they were listening the whole time. "I wouldn't tell anyone that you guys obviously aren't normal."
"How did you know?" Alice questions, wanting to also get some type of explanation as to why she hadn't seen a vision of this.
"Your eyes all turn from a light amber to a dark black. Edwards hands are always freezing cold. When you get around certain people your whole body tenses. Edward, Bella." She says watching them all stare at her wide eyes. "Jasper, me."
"Not to mention that Edward stopped a van with his bare hands when he was all the way across the parking lot when it happened." She finishes with a shrug.
"And you're not bothered?" Jasper questions in awe.
"I don't care." She shrugs simply.
The bus came to a stop and she gracefully gets up from her seat to walk off.
"What the hell just happened?" Emmett and Rosalie hiss as they walk towards the back of the bus.
"She just found out that we have a secret." Jasper grumbles, shoving away from his siblings and following after the Swan.
