Chapter 2
Blueheart noticed her kits sadness and wanted to talk to him but didn't think he would understand. Tigerkit slowly walked over to a corner in the den they were in, looking at the ground and drooping his tail. Dawnkit saw him and became confused as to why everyone in the clan seemed to be sad for one reason or another. She pranced over to her sad littermate and tried to cheer him up with play. No luck. After at least ten attempts at getting him to play with her, she gave up. She lay down next to the young tom and nuzzled him.
The next morning, Tigerkit and Dawnkit were taking a walk with Blueheart. She was going to show them how they hunt and what is dangerous and such. Kind of like their first lesson. They were getting older and were getting to the point of almost becoming apprentices. Blueheart had explained it to them a few days earlier and they could hardly wait! "When you become an apprentice, you get to hunt and learn all the things you need to know to become a warrior," she purred, whispering as she saw some mice not too far away. Tigerkit immediately ran to a mouse he had been watching for a while and pounced on top of it. "I got it!" he said, the mouse was in his mouth so his words became muffled. Blueheart looked at him, proud and surprised. They were only kits and Tigerkit had just caught his first mouse.
As they were walking back to the camp, Tigerkit became sad and started to drop hit tail. "When will dad come home?" He asked Blueheart, "I miss him". Blueheart sighed and stopped. She looked down at Tigerkit and said, "I'll tell you back at camp..." then they continued on walking back.
When they got back the two kits shared the mouse that Tigerkit had caught. Dawnkit walked out of the den and started to play with some other kits. While Tigerkit walked over to Blueheart and just sat down, waiting for her to tell him. Blueheart sighed and nuzzled him. "Tigerkit," she spoke soft and her voice was full of grief, "your father, was out hunting with some other clan warriors... and he met some danger," She paused, trying not to get tears. "The danger was too hard to fight or get away from and... well... he won't be coming home now" she started to tear up but held them back. Tigerkit looked at her a little confused, "Why isn't he coming home?" He looked up at Blueheart and she sighed, "Tigerkit, your father was killed."
That was all Tigerkit needed to hear to run out crying, he ran over to his littermate and told her everything. She started to cry but it wasn't as bad as Tigerkit. They walked into the den and curled up next to one another and cried. Blueheart kept a close eye on them as always, but gave them their space to grieve. She even relised that she also needed some time to get over the loss of her mate.
