the storm

The storm had been raging for hours. Like an army tormenting an enemy’s defences, the waves battered on the lighthouse walls as the thunder sounded like the screams of an angry god, we all hid below making sure nothing had broken as mighty waves crashed against the lighthouses like a battering ram against a palace door.
We had yelled at each other as the door at the bottom of the lighthouse swung open with a loud bang, the brass knob leaving an indent in the cold stone wall, about who was the go down there and risk closing it as so nothing on the ground was damaged or pulled away by the grasping arms of the gale. As the wind shrieked like a banshee and rain hammered down like bullets before we had decided I was to be the one to go down there as they made sure the light was still on to guide anyone foolish or brave enough to sail in the path of this wrathful beast
As I descended the spiralled stairs of stone and wood I swore I hears a sound of steel clattering upon stone but choked it up to some items being drawn away by the winds wandering hands as I grasped the swinging door handle as to not be uprooted and swept away into an early watery demise before wrestling the door shut and pushing some items against to potentially dissuade this happening again as I began to climb the cylindrical staircase to aid my friends in their own endeavour and to make sure nothing above had been displaced during our individual antics.
As I reached the top of the stairs I noticed that the sound of the lights mechanical turning had been stopped as I deciding to check it out as I climbed the cold ladder into the cabin that protects the monumental light from the elements only to be greeted to the sights of one of my friends body hanging limp withing the shattered remains of the small star whilst the door to the observation deck encircling the cabin to which I viewed from withing to notice a portion of the bars to stop us from falling to our untimely demise upon stone or seawater having been torn away with scraps of my friends clothing covering the jagged edged of one of the twisted steel poles the scraps of wool and cloth waved in the blistering winds as if to taunt me that they were gone and I was trapped here, alone.
As I reached over to my friend withing the large lantern to see who had lived as who had died I was overtaken by a feeling of terror as lightning struck the steel rod at the top of the tower as if to act as a warning to not touch him before I scarpered back down to the level below and try to radio for help only to be greeted by static likely due to the storm as I huddled into the corner pleading to any divine being I could think of for this godforsaken storm to end as another deafening crack of thunder shook the tower like that of a hammer on an anvil.
