The Break In
Unknown number: Plan is still on. Meet me at park in 20?
Rey: On my way. My sister's crashed on the couch.
Unknown number : Mom's well...you know.
Rey: Don't worry about it Thals. I get it.
Reyna closed out of the text messages and tucked her phone in her pocket. She very carefully snuck out the window and made her way towards the park. Her nerves were on edge but after running through the plan numerous times she was relatively certain Thalia's idea would work.
The park was creepy late at night. Not a single soul roamed on the playground and a few of the swings swung lazily in the breeze. Sitting on the stairs Reyna waited impatiently for Thalia. The other girl finally arrived jogging over to where Reyna sat.
"Alright, let's do this." Thalia breathed. Reyna nodded, remaining quiet, as she followed the punk to the school.
As expected it was easy to get in, Thalia lead Reyna around back through the thick bushes and over the fence. They ducked out of sight of the cameras reaching the back maintenance door. Thalia dug around in her pocket before producing a key.
"Where'd you get that?" Reyna whispered.
"The Stolls have a shit ton of fake spare keys for all the locks on this campus." Thalia shifted the key a bit before the door clicked and the bolt drew back. Smiling she stepped carefully inside and crept over to the powerbox mounted on the wall. "Gloves on."
Reyna passed over a pair of gloves to Thalia and the two slipped the fabric over their hands. Reyna passed Thalia a set of bolt cutters from a nearby shelf. Thalia busted off the lock and pulled open the panel. Tape labeled the switches and levers and buttons.
Thalia glanced over the power board until she found the switch labeled cameras. Stealing a screw driver from a tool box she unscrewed the covering for the lever revealing the wires below. "Alright now to make it look like an accident."
Reyna spotted a squirt bottle and passed it over along with a bit of wire strippers to take off a bit of the exterior rubber. Thalia worked with nimble fingers until water hit the wires and the circuit sparked. A red light blinked above the lever indicating its need of maintenance.
Reyna carefully put everything back where it was as Thalia tucked the broken lock in her pocket and put a spare over the latch. With the cameras now disabled both girls relaxed a bit.
"Alright now to get to the pool. There shouldn't be any security guards, like I said Argus is gone." Thalia breathed easing open the door connecting to the interior of the building.
Reyna lead the way through campus until they came to the building with a large domed roof like that of an airplane hangar. Thalia once again popped open the door and the two stepped inside. The pool lights were always on which was beneficial in lighting their way.
"This is weird." Reyna said as she awkwardly stepped into the boys' swim locker room.
"Yeah it is but I've always wondered what it was li- oh god it smells in here." Thalia's nose wrinkled up and her eyes scrunched shut as her body adjusted to the smell. Reyna covered her nose with the edge of her shirt.
"Here." Thalia spotted Octavian's locker and carefully did the combination. "Do what you need to I'll be back."
"Where are you going?" Reyna whispered quietly.
"I'm not gonna miss this chance to look around more. The principal's office isn't much farther. I'm gonna do some digging around." Thalia glanced at the clock on the wall. "I've got time for it."
"Be careful and don't take to long. I don't like the idea of you being alone." Reyna frowned.
"You got it." Thalia nodded before running off. Digging very carefully into her pocket, Reyna pulled out the hard drive from and glanced inside Octavian's locker. It was well organized, a towel neatly folded, goggles resting on top, a duffle bag, extra shoes, some clothes, shampoo and conditioner, a swim cap, and then Reyna spotted the perfect place to put the hard drive.
A black lock box tucked into the back of his locker. It was a cheap one, where you pushed on the switch and spun the dial until the lid popped open. Anyone could get in, you didn't need to have a combination.
Smiling to herself Reyna turned the numbered dial slowly until the lid sprung open. What she found was more surprising than she would have expected. Needles and pills rested inside the box.
Instructions were taped to the lid. Eyes scanning the small font Reyna felt her hands shake with anger, the dumb ass was doping. Probably desperate to try and compete with Percy who'd been dominating the sport for years.
Shaking her head Reyna set the hard drive in the box with the other contraband. Closing the lid and scrambling the dial number she shut the locker and made sure everything appeared to be in order.
Across campus Thalia had successfully slipped inside the principal's office and was pulling out files both on the computer and from a file cabinet. She had them sprawled out on the desk.
She'd neglected destroying the burner cell phone and it had come in handy. Thalia snapped numerous pictures to examine things further.
Silena's folder was open and as far as Thalia was concerned her track record was impeccable except for a few allegations.
The print read:
Important Notes:
Miss Beauregard has been accused of vandalizing Miss Tanaka's property on more than one occasion. She denies any allegations but it's important to note such allegations.
Frowning Thalia flipped to the next page where a new note had been made;
Miss Beauregard has been struggling in anatomy class quiet notably. It appears she's rather uncomfortable with her lab partners.
"Wonder who she got stuck with." Thalia frowned moving the file aside and cross checking it with anything on the computer. There had been no digital additions. She moved on quickly to Beckendorf's.
Important Notes;
Charles is an exceptional student in his mechanics class and exhibits impeccable behavior, however, he got into an altercation with two young gentlemen over his girlfriend Miss Beauregard.
"This is fishy." Thalia mumbled digging around until she spotted Annabeth's folder and set it on top of the other two.
Important Notes;
Miss Chase has been in the hospital for quite some time. An investigation took place regarding a young gentleman and his violent actions towards the girl. Please note that all accusations were proven false and the true culprit has not been found.
On to the next file.
Important Notes;
Perseus Jackson has quite the track record and has been expelled on numerous occasions for his insistence on badgering a few of our school's most prestigious young gentlemen. Keep an eye on the boy.
Important Notes;
Miss Nightshade has been exhibiting unusual behavior. Her soccer coach notes her tendency to miss practice due to "familial matters." In his words; "Sir, I'm worried that there are things going on at home that require intervention." Of course it's not a school's place to intervene. Such things must be discarded.
Important Notes:
The other soccer star, Artemis, is one infraction away from being expelled. Her disrespect to the male staff is intolerable not to mention her record of violence to specific males on campus and a false accusation of sexual assault against another student.
"False my ass." Thalia grumbled.
Important Notes;
Miss Grace is on her final leg here. Below is a list of infractions, there are too many for specific details;
• brought a pocket knife on campus
• skateboarded on the stairs of the E building
• punched a teacher
•broke the custodian's broom
•made a stink bomb in chemistry
•tied a student's shoe laces together
• has been in numerous physical altercations
•parked illegally on campus
•caught vandalizing the bathroom
•punched a hole in the gym wall
"That about sums me up." Thalia smiled slightly shaking her head. She put her file and her friends' files back where they belonged before looking for others.
Important Notes;
Orion is a stellar student. His accusation of sexual assault was considered false and should not be taken into consideration.
Important Notes;
Octavian takes a certain 'pleasure' in anatomy class according to a fellow student who claims it makes her uncomfortable. However the teacher has looked into the situation and the problem is not as drastic as it seemed. An agreement has been worked out.
Important Notes:
Lycaon and one of his friends were caught fighting a mechanics student in the hallway. The fight was started by the other student and any charges of consequences have been excused.
Important Notes;
Ethan Nakamura is a quite boy. He has a few psychological and medical problems to take note of.
Important Notes;
Tanaka is a wonderful student who is in charge of the spirit weeks here at campus. Though most don't like her it's due to her dominant personality.
She holds a grudge with another female student for the vandalization of property.
Important Notes;
Luke Castellan is the golden boy of the school. And accusations of him physically assaulting another female student have been proven wrong by the police as expected.
"You're kidding me." Thalia laughed bitterly. "These assholes get off with everything!"
Part of Thalia wanted to punch a hole through the computer but as she clicked through the system she uncovered something very important.
Luke Castellan;
•Caught smuggling illegal substances onto campus
•Guilty of vandalizing other student's things and cars.
•Known actions of manipulation against others
All of the accusations had been whited out in the final copy of his file. The principal was erasing all wrong doings of Thalia's enemies. He was enabling them, but the question was why?
Logging off and powering down the computer Thalia made her way back to Reyna after cleaning up. She found the other girl exiting the locker room.
"Did you finish?" Thalia asked meeting her half way.
"Yeah. What about you?" Reyna asked.
"You have no idea what I saw. The principal is painting our files to look like we're all delinquents but he's erasing all criminal charges and infractions of other students!" Thalia shook her head pacing angrily along the pool deck. "Either someone's manipulating him, or he's manipulating the students to get them to do things for him. Either way it's not okay."
"Have you ever even seen the principal?" Reyna asked watching her friend pace angrily back and forth.
"No! It's like he doesn't exist. As far as I'm concerned you have to do really bad things to meet him. I've only met the Vice Principal." Thalia explained pausing and running a hand through her hair. "Every time I think we've figured things out it gets worse. Deeper."
"Hey, calm down." Reyna caught Thalia's arm as she began pacing again and held her by the shoulders. "At least we know how they're getting away with things."
"Nothing makes sense anymore it's like it all just pools together in a bunch of none sense." Thalia shook her head feeling overwhelmed.
"Look we know they've been following you, all of you. Luke's gang is responsible for the deaths and disappearances of your friends. We know that. Now what we need to figure out is exactly how it all happened but better yet who's manipulating who. Once we do that we find the source of everything and then we can really start looking." As Reyna talked Thalia began to calm down.
"I need a distraction. I don't want to think about all of this right now. We did what we came to do." Thalia swallowed hard composing herself again.
"There's a pool." Reyna mused nodding at it. "Bet I could make a bigger splash."
"Please I know how to cannon ball." Thalia smiled slightly.
"No, you know how to belly flop." Reyna teased pulling off her shoes and socks.
"Put your money where your mouth is Arellano." Thalia grinned shrugging off her jacket. The two tossed their clothes aside, only their undergarments remained.
"You're up." Reyna said tying her hair back. Thalia rolled her shoulders and made a big deal about getting a proper run up. "Get on with it."
Thalia ran before springing off the pool deck and splashing into the water. Reyna followed close behind tackling Thalia just as the other girl popped out of the water.
"Hey!" Thalia laughed shoving Reyna away when they'd resurfaced. "I could have died."
"Oh don't be so dramatic." Reyna smiled splashing Thalia in the face.
"You are so dead." Thalia smiled evilly. Reyna attempted to swim away but Thalia pounced wrapping her arms around Reyna's neck and tugging her under.
It was quiet underwater, peaceful. Reyna spotted Thalia, who'd let go, doing a handstand at the bottom of the pool. Reyna was already planning on laughing if her friend got water up her nose.
Thalia smiled at her eyes still impossibly bright in the water. Swimming over Reyna sat down on the bottom of the pool and crossed her legs looking smugly at Thalia.
Thalia's expression shifted into one of confusion before Reyna knocked her over. The two moved only for a quick breath of air before going back under and swimming around a bit more- their antics only growing until they were in a full on water war.
Reyna was the first to make her way over to the side of the pool resting her arms on the side and catching her breath a bright smile on her face.
"Tired?" Thalia teased swimming over and taking up a similar position next to her.
"Yeah." Reyna laughed resting her chin on her arms and staring at the wall.
"Whatcha thinking about?" Thalia asked moving so she floated on her back.
"Just that it's been a while since we've gotten to do stuff like this. Especially since this crazy mess started. It's really nice." Reyna sighed looking over at the dark haired girl who somehow looked so relaxed despite her former panic.
"Mmmm. Yeah." Thalia smiled lost in her own little world.
"You're cute when you relax." Reyna noted. "It's something you don't do often."
"It's hard in my situation." Thalia replied opening her eyes.
"I know." Reyna gave her a tiny smile. "We should get going."
"Another minute?" Thalia asked hopefully and Reyna obliged copying her friend. The two floated on top of the water shoulder to shoulder staring at the high ceiling.
"You know what I've always wanted?" Reyna asked.
"What?"
"A place where you can just float, sort of like this, and no one will bug you. You can just stay like that for a while and not care about anything." Reyna explained earning a small laugh from Thalia.
"That's called getting high Rey."
"You're a dork." Reyna laughed shoving Thalia. "Now let's go."
The two dried off with stolen towels from the locker room and shoved them into the team's laundry bin. Once dressed they exited the way they had come and made sure their tracks had been covered before heading back to Reyna's.
The ordeal had left them both exhausted. After brief showers they changed clothes and collapsed on the bed eager for sleep.
"Nice work today soldier." Thalia mumbled curling on her side and closing her eyes.
"You too pilot." Reyna smiled remembering their games as a kid. They always played pilots and soldiers. They'd gone dressed like that for Halloween three years in a row.
Reyna watched the steady rise and fall of Thalia's chest and shoulders until her breathing grew steady and Reyna knew the other girl was asleep. Smiling softly to herself she too fell asleep.
