♕ Chapter 10
And Prince Alex's picture on your right :P -------->
"I know this is your first ball and you've never been to one before," Seth said, sarcasm hitting every word. "But try to control yourself, and, the most important thing is..." he warned and leaned closer to Rose. She moved back a little further, afraid that he might do something to her. "Don't even try to embarrass me," he mouthed, their forehead almost bumping. Rose nodded and Seth moved away from her.
Rose frowned. When would he ever be nice to her? The limo pulled up and Rose looked outside the window. A lot of photographers were waiting for the guests to arrive, to take their pictures. Especially the future King and Queen's pictures. The driver opened the door for them and Seth got out first. The moment she stepped out from the limo, camera flashes hit her eyes. She could barely see around her.
Seth took her arm and looped it into his. He smiled to the camera and raised a hand. Rose saw he was smiling so she did the same thing. She tried to smile as well as she could, even though the flashes were burning her eyes. She also tried her best not to loose her balance because as she was wearing four-inch high heels. They finally reached the main door and went into the building.
The ball was held in a big hall and had been organized by the mayor. It was held in celebration for the grand opening of a new bridge, which was opened for the citizens that morning. The doorman bowed at them, and so, Rose bowed back. But Seth coughed, to inform her that she doesn't have to bow back. Rose ignored him. The man opened the door for them. "Prince Seth Larston and his wife, Princess Rose Larston," he announced their arrival.
All eyes were on them as she walked into the hall with Seth by her side. Some of them were smiling as Seth shook everyone's hands. Rose just smiled warmly. She then saw a table full of delicious food and desserts. She pulled Seth's arm, heading to the table. "Where are you going?" Seth whispered and stopped her from walking.
"There," Rose said, pointing the table. She rubbed her stomach. "I'm hungry," she pleaded. Seth shrugged. "Is that all you think about? Eating?" Seth sneered. Rose nodded, causing him to sigh. "Fine. We'll eat after we find my friends," he struck a deal.
"Your friends are here?" Rose asked bewildered. She thought that they were the only Maximillian's would be there. Plus, she felt slightly uncomfortable around his friends. They always looked at her like she had done something bad. Seth nodded and his eyes wandered around. At last, he spotted Luke and Alan, near the drinks table. "There," he said, and pulled her hand.
Luke and Alan were joking around and having their drinks, when Seth showed up. "Hey man!" Luke greeted him, and they shook hands. He then glared at Rose, who was hiding behind him. Luke coughed. "So, just the two of you?" He broke the silence. Seth nodded. Alan was smiling brightly and gazing on Rose. "Wow Rose, you look hot," he said in awe.
Rose shuffled her feet from one place to another, her cheeks turned to cherry-red. "Thanks," she said shyly, looking down to the floor. Luke shrugged and then patted Alan's back. "What are you talking about Alan?" he asked his weird friend.
Alan laughed and pointed his hand to Rose. "Seriously, she's hot. Look!" He praised her again. Seth looked down, shaking his head. Alan is always weird that way but he was right. Rose did look beautiful tonight.
"If she wasn't your wife Seth, she would definitely be my date tonight," Alan winked at Rose. She laughed and started to think that Alan was different from his friends. "Stop joking around Alan," Luke grumbled and hit his shoulder. Alan raised his hands. "I was joking dude," he said to Seth, who was crossing his arms to his chest, annoyed by his stupid act. Seth sighed. "Whatever," he said.
"Hey, guys," Alex showed up from behind them, wearing a broad smile. He then turned his eyes towards Rose and smiled. "Hi Rose," he greeted her. Rose grinned. "Hey Alex. So, everyone's here, huh?" she joked. Alan chuckled. "Yeah, our dads are the mayor's friends," he chattered. "While Alex is the second Prince, and you two are future King and Queen, so that's why everyone's here," he winked.
"And I'm here too," a voice surprised them. They turned towards her and Rose was startled. Jessica, wearing a sexy black short dress, was walking towards them. "Hello everyone," she greeted smiling. But Rose could feel that she was unwanted here. Luke who seemed to be delighted to see her, raised a hand. "Hey,Jess," he grinned. Rose glimpsed at Seth, to see his reaction. But his face was blank. No smile or frown.
Alex could sense the awkwardness between them. He glanced at Rose who was staring down, on the floor. She felt uncomfortable with Jessica presence. "Rose! You must be hungry. Come on," he said, inviting her to go get some food. She looked up at Seth. "Go. You said that you were hungry." Seth gave the permission. Rose looked at the smiling Alex and hesitated for a second. But then she followed him, heading towards the food table.
Rose reached the table but all the food didn't look delicious to her anymore. The table was served with lots of chocolates – her favourite. But she lost her appetite when Jessica showed up. Alex was busy choosing his dessert. "This looks delicious, doesn't it?" He asked, and put one of the chocolate balls into his plate. He looked up at Rose and saw that she was pensive. "Rose?" he held her shoulder.
"Yes?" Rose said, startled. She was thinking hard about Jessica and Seth. She tried not to, but she just couldn't. Alex let out a small laugh. "Are you okay?" he asked full of concern. Rose shook her head. "Yeah. I'm not hungry," she lied and smiled weakly. Alex knew that she lied. "It's Jessica, isn't it?" he guessed.
Rose tried to smile. "No, I'm just thinking about something else," she drawled. Alex decided not to pursue his question. Maybe she needed some time. "Okay then. Lets go back to them," he said and put his hand on his shoulders, gesturing her towards their friends. But Rose stopped and saw that he wasn't holding anything. "I thought you wanted to eat?" she asked, puzzled. Alex chuckled. "Nah, I'll pass," he said and they continued walking.
Jessica was now standing beside Seth, talking to Luke and Alan. Rose had to admit that they did look good together. Seth was handsome, and Jessica gorgeous. They would have made a great couple, had it not been for her. Alex wrapped his arm around her and squeezed her shoulder. Rose looked up at him and saw that he was smiling. A smile that was ensuring her that everything was going to be fine.
The orchestra started to play a slow music - signalling the time for the dance to start. Rose waited, with hope that Seth would invite her for a dance. Even though it would have been just because she was his wife. Seth realise what he had to do, grabbed her hand, and walked towards the centre. Rose couldn't help but smile.
Alex and Jessica could only watch them walking towards the ball. He glanced at Jessica, who was now looking down and slightly unhappy to see someone she loved dance with his wife. "You want to dance?" He asked, trying to act like a gentleman. Jessica looked up at him, puzzled. "What?" she repeated. Alex let out a small laugh. "Are we going to watch them dancing until the end? It's better if we join them instead of standing here like a pole," Alex explained, and stretched his hand towards her.
He was right. She couldn't just stand here, watch them and hurt herself. Jessica took his hand and they walked towards the married couple. Seth and Rose already started to dance when Alex and Jessica showed up, and took a space beside them. Seth was shocked to see Jessica with him, and so was Rose. They had never expected this.
Rose and Seth danced for a few minutes, along with Alex and Jessica on their left. Rose looked at his face, which was just inches to hers. He wasn't wearing any smile and his face was blank. He was probably jealous to see Jessica dancing with Alex. Rose sighed and she no longer felt happy. Then, Alex suddenly stopped dancing and turned to Seth. "Switch partners?" he asked.
Seth looked at Rose and her brown eyes were looking down. He thought that she wanted to dance with Alex. He nodded, and Alex took Rose's hands. He was so happy that Seth did agree. Seth took Jessica's hands awkwardly and put his hand behind her. He looked at her, and she was smiling broadly.
"Stop looking at them," Alex prattled when he realised that Rose's eyes wasn't on him, but on her husband that was dancing with another woman. Rose couldn't stop looking at them. Slightly afraid that they might kiss or hug or whatever it is. Rose turned her eyes towards Alex. "I'm not," she faked a chuckle and lied. Alex shook his head and smiled. He could tell when she lied.
"You need some air," Alex smiled and gestured her away from there. "But-" Rose hesitated as Alex pulled her. She didn't have a choice but to follow him, walking towards the balcony. Seth didn't notice that his wife was gone. He kept on dancing with a smiling Jessica.
"You've changed," Jessica started. Seth shrugged. "Yeah. I'm married," he replied. Jessica chuckled and shook her head. "Not just that," she smiled. She missed the old Seth. The Seth that would smile whenever she was around him. Not the one who hated to see her. "I've missed you," she let out honestly.
"Jess, I told you. Nothing would happen now," Seth blurted. "I'm married. We're over," he stared into her deep blue eyes that always shined when he was with her. Jessica shoved his hands from hers. "But you don't love her, Seth. I know about it. Luke told me everything," she protested. Seth shrugged and headed away from there. He needed some fresh air.
Rose was silent. She wasn’t in the mood to talk. She and Alex were standing outside of the hall, in the balcony. The wind blew her hair and a strand sweeping her shoulders. She stuck it behind her ears and drew a long breath. Alex smiled at her. "More relaxed now?" he asked, grinning.
"A little. Thanks Alex," she chirped. Then, she looked deeply into Alex eyes through her eyelashes. "You know anything about Jessica?" She asked, with the hope that he did. Her smile disappeared from her face. Alex sighed, "I wish I knew, Rose. But, I just got back here and Seth and I didn't contact each other when I stayed in London," he said.
Rose looked down, disappointed. How could she know more about them if Alex himself, didn't know anything. Whatever it was, she must find out. She couldn't just shut herself and pretend like she didn't know anything about it. "Its okay then," Rose mumbled, finding it hard not to show her disappointment. "I'm sorry," Alex drawled. He felt useless, as he couldn't do anything to make her smile.
Then, Rose turned her eyes to another balcony, on her left. She was shocked to see Seth and Jessica, talking to each other, eyes by eyes. She gasped and tried to stop thinking about what they were talking about. She hated the feeling. Alex noticed that her face changed and so looked at what she was staring at, Seth and Jessica.
"Please Seth. I just want us back. I don't want to lose you," Jessica pleaded, squeezing his arm. But Seth was silent. He didn't know how to explain to her. "Jess please. I don't want to give you any hope because there's none," he said truthfully. "I'm married to her. There's nothing that can change that."
Jessica held his arms. "But, you don't love her! You could divorce her, Seth. Please. Don't do this to me," tears trailed heavily down her cheeks. Seth looked away, not willing to see her cry. "Jess, don't do this to me," he drawled. "You know how much I hate to see people crying,"
She suddenly hugged him tightly. "Then stop hurting me. Come back to me and divorce her Seth. I love you," she cried, hugging Seth tightly. She didn't want to loose him. Seth shrugged but didn't do anything to stop her from hugging him.
Rose saw what they're doing and couldn't believe it. Her eyes started to fill with tears. Why was she feeling this way? The pain inside her was burning and she had never felt this way. Alex realised that she was about to cry. He pulled her into his embrace.
"Don't cry," he whispered. "Just don't. Its not worth it Rose." He hugged her tightly, feeling the heat of her body. Rose was crying and sinking her face onto his chest. It was proven now; Seth and Jessica do love each other. "I don't want to cry," Rose croaked. "I don't want to."
"Shh," he tried to calm her down, and placed his head on her hair. He felt so comfortable with Rose in his embrace. The kind of feeling that he had been searching for all this time. "I promise you that I won't let you cry. I will always be there for you Rose. I will always make you laugh and smile. I promise," he vowed and kissed her hair. A tear dropped from his eye.
