One sunny day, by the river, Darlene was collecting some tree branches to make a campfire. Her blonde hair was loose and her sky blue eyes looked tired. She had a lot of work to do, and she was exhausted. Her mother, Daffodil, had fallen sick and couldn't care for herself. Every day Darlene would wake up very early and head to the river, where she would clean dirty clothes, collect fruit and fish to eat and pick sticks for a campfire. Later she would head back home to her mum and care for her. This went on for three months, and it was difficult to help now. It was the end of fall, and winter would come soon. Darlene was worried she would be in danger in icy weather.

Winter came, and Darlene was off again. She could barely see where she was going because of the pearl white snow that covered the once green grass. She wandered off further than usual, and began to worry. She had no clue where she was and it was getting dark. About an hour later, she heard faint whining noises. She was curious and got closer to where the noise came. She saw a little girl. Her face was as pale as a ghost, and her dark, jet black hair was messy and dirty. Darlene got closer, and asked the girl if she knew where her parents were and what was her name. The little girl said that her name was Hope, and that her parents had just died. A tear fell across Darlene's cheek. She felt very sad for the girl and gave her a bear hug. They stayed like that for a few minutes, until Darlene saw a familiar tree. She gasped excitedly. That tree was near her house. She took Hope's hand and led her home. On the way, she explained who she was and comforted her. When she got home, she introduced Hope to Daffodil. Her mum's face lit up instantly. She gave Hope a very big hug.

Darlene noticed that something her mum needed was company. She was out all day, and Daffodil always stayed alone. Hope needed a family, and Darlene knew that meeting Hope was part of her destiny and that they would live peacefully together, caring for eachother. This was the start of an amazing friendship between the three girls, and an adventure that would last forever.
