Melissa’s heart dropped. “She what?!” Her mother always told her that she wouldn’t have Melissa meet anyone she was dating unless they were serious… If she wanted Andi to meet John… That meant they were getting serious…
“She told me earlier that John is coming over tomorrow for me to meet him…”
Melissa ran a hand through her hair. “Shit shit shit shit shit! This is not good…”
“What do I do?”
“I don’t know…” Melissa sighed. “We don’t want mom getting serious with someone… We need to get her and Dad back together as quickly as possible!”
“And how do we do that? I don’t think Mom will ever want to be in the same place as Dad, she thinks he cheated on her and she’s still hurt… She almost cried when telling me about it…”
Sighing, Melissa sat back in the booth. “We need to find out what really happened that night. Prove Dad’s innocence…”
“How do we do that?” Peter asked.
Melissa shook her head. “I don’t know… We need more details about when it happened, where it happened, and who with…”
“The fuck is this, Clue?” Andi joked. “Like seriously it’s like Clue but instead of finding out the weapon we’re finding out when Dad allegedly cheated on Mom”
Melissa sighed irritatedly. “Andi, can we get back to the problem at hand?”
“Right, sorry. I think you’re going to have to question Dad more about what happened. I don’t think Mom is going to tell me anything else…”
“But how am I going to question him about it without letting him know that I know that he allegedly cheated?”
Peter shrugged. “We could say Miss Natasha told you”
“Wait, Zia Nat knows about the switch?”
Melissa nodded before realizing that Andi couldn’t see her. “Yeah… She came over for breakfast this morning and I was surprised to see the Avengers and when I called her Zia Nat she knew it was me because apparently when you talk directly to her you call her Zia Tasha most of the time”
“Shit… I forgot about that… How did she take it?”
“Oh she’s cool with it. She said she’d help if we needed it. She said she kept in contact with Mom but couldn’t tell us anything that happened. Maybe I can have her help me get information from Dad…”
“Maybe. Zia Tasha might be able to scare him into telling you” Andi laughed. “Anyways, onto the John thing. How am I supposed to act?”
Melissa sighed. “If I was there, I would be a little mean. I would be mad about the whole thing and not want him to date Mom. I would act like a typical teenager that doesn’t want their Mom to date…”
“Should I pull a Parent Trap and do what they did to Meredith Blake?”
“No, let's just see what happens…” She rolled her eyes. “Our life is way too much like the Parent Trap…”
“Literally”
They said their goodbyes and hung up. Melissa set her phone down on the table and bit her lip nervously. She was scared that none of this was going to work and that her Mom wouldn’t allow her to see Andi or her Dad anymore because of what they did…
“You okay Liss?”
Melissa shrugged. “I just… What if Mom doesn’t want to get back together with Dad and this John dude becomes my new Dad…”
“You can’t force her to get back together with your Dad, especially if she’s still hurt by him… We just have to see how everything plays out…” He put his hand reassuringly on hers. “Why don’t we call Miss Natasha and see if she’ll help us?”
Nodding, Melissa pulled out her phone and texted Natasha, who had given Melissa her number earlier, and asked her if she would meet them at the diner they were currently at. Natasha responded not long later saying that she’d be there in ten minutes.
While they waited, Peter bought them some muffins and they got to know each other more. Since they weren’t at Stark Mansion anymore, they could talk about Melissa’s life freely without worrying about anyone overhearing and finding out that she wasn’t really Andi.
Peter could see so many differences between Melissa and Andi, but yet there were also a lot of similarities between the two, especially with their mannerisms. Like the way they held their iced coffee cups, hand at the top, palm partly on the lid, swirling it around periodically. The way they both licked their lips after every sip they took, and the way they would stick their tongue out slightly when they were deep in thought, which was one of the things Peter loved about Andi. The two girls were just as similar as they were different, though Andi would probably disagree with him about that.
The bell above the diner’s door rang and Melissa looked up, waving her hand in front of Peter’s face to snap him out of his thoughts. Natasha came over and sat down next to Peter, smiling at the teens. “What’s up guys?”
Melissa sighed. “We need your help…”
They explained everything to Natasha, including the fact that Pepper was getting serious with a guy, and Natasha didn’t like that either. “Your parents were perfect for each other, Tony would have never hurt Pepper, intentionally or not.” She sighed. “I don’t know if I should be a part of this…”
“Please Zia Nat! I need to know more about why my parents broke up… I need my Mom to know that Dad didn’t cheat on her… Please” She practically begged.
After thinking for a few minutes, Natasha sighed and nodded. “Alright. I’ll help”
They talked about their plan for questioning Tony and then after that they went back to the Mansion. Nobody was there, Jarvis said that everyone had gone out somewhere and that Tony would be back for dinner. The three of them hung out in the house waiting for him to get home, Peter and Melissa played games on the PS4 and Natasha watched them, joining them after the two of them played a few games.
A few hours later, Tony came home. They heard him set his keys on the table by the door and walked into the living room. “Hey guys, what’s up?”
Melissa shrugged. “Just chilling” She set her controller down and looked over at Tony. “Can we talk…?”
Raising an eyebrow, Tony picked up mail from the table and started going through it. “About…?”
“Mom…”
Tony froze, he tossed the mail back onto the table and shook his head. “I don’t want to talk about it Andi” He went into the kitchen and Melissa followed.
“Come on! I deserve to know what happened!” She yelled. “I want to know why my mother isn’t in my life! Why doesn’t she love me!” Melissa started tearing up to make Tony feel bad and hopefully tell her what happened.
Natasha and Peter had followed them into the kitchen and looked at each other concerned, not sure if this was part of Melissa’s plan or something else.
“Andi, your mother loves you so much…”
“Then why doesn’t she want to be in my life?!” She yelled.
Tony sighed. “She does, she just can’t!”
“Why not?!”
He shook his head. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore…” He went to leave but Natasha stepped in front of him. “Really Romanoff?” He raised an eyebrow.
Natasha crossed her arms. “She deserves to know…”
“Natasha…”
They both stood there glaring at each other, Natasha with her arms crossed and Tony looking pissed. Natasha looked really intimidating and it scared Melissa and Peter a little bit.
Tony broke eye contact and walked over to the fridge. “I told you Natasha and I told Andi, I don’t want to talk about Pepper”
“Fine, then I’ll tell her. And I won’t paint you in a pretty light”
Tony turned around and glared at her and she smirked. It was quiet and tense for a few minutes, both Tony and Natasha looked pissed and neither Peter nor Melissa could tell what was going to happen.
After a few minutes, Tony sighed. “I was at a party, I was drunk. This woman was flirting with me, I wanted nothing to do with her because I had your mother. Next thing I remember, I’m waking up in a bed with her naked next to me, having no recollection of the night before.” He shook his head, staring at the wall deep in thought, his eyes starting to water. “Your mother found out, was understandably upset and she left. I haven’t seen her since. She loves you and she wanted to be in your life but she couldn’t stand to be around me…”
Trying to act like how she assumed Andi would, Melissa started to tear up. “You cheated on Mom? Why would you do that?!”
Tony shook his head. “I would never… I loved your mother… I don’t know what happened”
“Who was this woman?” Natasha asked, not even knowing the answer to this question herself.
Tony continued to look away, not wanting to make eye contact with them. “Christine…”
Natasha’s arms dropped to her sides and she looked at him in disbelief. “Everhart?”
Nodding, Tony sighed. “Not my best moment…”
Melissa recognized the name. “Are you talking about the bitchy news reporter? That’s who you cheated on Mom with?!”
“I didn’t mean to! I loved your mother, I still do. I would never ever intentionally hurt her”
Shaking her head, Melissa left the kitchen and went upstairs. She wasn’t upset, but Tony needed to believe that she was, because Andi would be. She sat down on Andi’s bed and pulled out her phone as Natasha and Peter walked in.
“You okay?” Peter asked, concerned.
Melissa nodded. “Yeah, I just thought that Andi would have stormed out. I’m about to text her and let her know what we found out.” She looked up at Natasha. “Do you know Christine Everhart?”
She shrugged. “Not personally. I’ve seen her at parties and stuff. Why do you ask?”
“We need to find her.” She said “Fill in the blanks in Dad’s memory…”
