Bea: Senior Year Relationships

Len was completely insane. I want you to know that. Noah and I were just friends, if even that. I had no urge whatsoever to enter into any relationship, especially not one with Noah. I barely knew the guy and I had so many reasons to definitely not want to date anyone (reasons I'm sure Len has already filled you in on, the stinker). Besides, I have a theory about relationships during senior year that outlaws dating during second semester. At least, not beginning to date someone during the second semester of senior year.

You see, people make the mistake of getting nostalgic and starting relationships late in the year. I get the nostalgia thing, it's a part of life, but these relationships are easily avoidable. I know, you may think that it's a good idea to start dating someone in April of your senior year but it's not. The relationship has an easily identifiable expiration date: graduation. And like all expiration dates, the relationship might not go sour exactly at that date but it will start to. It will rot and implode all the way until you leave in the fall. So do yourself a favor, don't start dating anyone during the second semester. The only possible exception from this rule is that you guys were "talking" and "almost dating" for at least a month before.

This rule is to make people unhappy, it's to keep them from getting into relationships are doomed to fail. If you start dating in May and graduate in June, you are only guaranteeing that relationship one month. And that seems like a kind of shitty thing to do. No relationship is going to succeed when you both see graduation and college coming closer and closer. Some people learn to live with long distance relationships but those people are rare. If you're not sure if the relationship is worth it, think about why you didn't date this person before. If it's because you just weren't interested before and nothing obvious happened that made you change your mind, you probably were just a victim of nostalgia. No relationship built on nostalgia can work. It's sad but true.
