I stared at a blank wall with motionless eyes. The wall was white but also non-existent to my eyes. I saw it without seeing it. I heard voices without hearing them. All I heard was blurred noise and my steady breathing as I stared at the ghost of a wall. The edges of my vision swirled with different patterns but my eyes remained focused on the wall.
"Sean?" Everything clicked into place at the single word and I slowly turned to the teacher standing in front of my desk. "Why aren't you paying attention?" I didn't answer. I haven't spoken a single word in years. I couldn't. The teacher sighed, seeing she wouldn't get a word from me and simply held out her marker and pointed to the board. She wanted me to solve a question.
I silently got up with numb legs and walked to the board with a blank expression. My hand moved on its own as it solved the question I wasn't even thinking about. The only images in my mind was the last time I saw her face. That face that used to bring me joy now filled me with anger but nothing showed on my face.
I realized I'd finished writing the answer and stepped away, heading back to my chair as my teacher looked at the work in shock. I'm guessing I wrote the correct answer. I sat down and returned to staring at the wall blankly. Until a comment made me blink.
"He's just a freak. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a robot."
I slowly turned to the voice, seeing a girl with black hair reaching half way down her back. She had one blue eye and one red eye. She was giving me a dirty look but I didn't say anything.
"See. It doesn't even speak," she spat. I continued staring at her when slowly thoughts began to fill my head. Images and scenes of her past. When it all stopped she let out a gasp and stared at me with shock before looking down.
"Cassidy! You will not speak of another student that way. Go to the office immediately!" The teacher spat. She got up quietly and left, her persona completely different as the bell rang.
"Hey, Sean was it?" A friendly voice spoke beside me. I looked up to see a male with blonde hair and blue eyes and a male with long brown hair and a simple poker face mask. I simply blinked, not saying anything.
"Cool, wanna hang with us at lunch? We have a secret hideout where no one can bother us," the blonde said in a thick accent. I blinked again and he grabbed my arm, as if he knew I wouldn't answer anyway. I didn't bother pulling away though, something about the male just gave off a nice aura.
"I'm Felix, and this is Cry! We can be best friends," the blonde said.
I sat on the edge of my bed, tears in my eyes at the memory. That was the first time I was introduced to Felix and Cry. The key moment that led to where I am now. What if I had pulled away from Felix at that moment? Would we be friends now, or are we even classed as proper friends. I mean, we work together and live together but is it friendship or just looking out for teammates?
I took a deep breath to steady myself a little before getting up. I had been lost in thought since Cry left and couldn't get my head straight. I needed some fresh air. I needed to get out of this small room. I needed to get away...
I felt myself begin to shake and I closed my eyes, trying to picture a place I could go to to calm down. It wasn't long before I felt the familiar feeling of shifting through shadows and I opened my eyes, seeing the small house I used to live in so many years ago.
The house looked like it had been engulfed by shadows and darkness and gave off a creepy aura, sending chills down my spine. Something drew me to the looming structure though. So I found myself walking towards the structure and reaching for the door.
"Hey! Get away from there. It's dangerous!" A voice called. I immediately spun around to be greeted by a young woman around my age with short messy brown hair. Her eyes slightly widened when she saw me.
"Wait... Sean?" She said quietly. I felt a rush of energy serge through me at the name and frowned, shaking my head no. "Oh, you just look similar to-."
"My name's Jack," I said monotonously.
"Oh, okay. Um, why were you trying to go inside? Are you friends of the people that used to live here? They've been gone for years now," she said, brushing her hair out of her face.
"Ah, no. I'm just curious as to what happened to the house. But, what happened to the family?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"No one really knows but some of the older people say it has something to do with the couples son. He went missing the day this house got haunted," she said sadly.
"Haunted?" I asked. Does she mean by the shadows?
"Well, I don't know for sure but anyone who goes inside comes out a different person. They hear voices and the darkness tries to grab at them," she said. I felt like smiling at the thought but kept a straight face.
"Why do they think the son did this?" I asked.
"He was a magic user. There's a memorial at school of the kid the son murdered with the same shadows that haunt this house," she said, her voice sounding almost bitter.
"It's called dark magic. I've been... studying it for a while. There isn't enough information though so I came here after hearing about this house. It sure looks scarier in person," I said, turning away from the girl before smiling. "I'd be cautious of those who use it."
