I often sat here, it was my favourite spot.
Just in front of the elevator maintenance door, at the very top of the stairs. There was a little trapdoor that led to the roof of my apartment building but it was always locked.
I particularly liked this spot because a part of the ceiling was made of glass. On rainy days, I would sit on the last step and look straight up at the falling drops.
Thunder was even better. I would count after the lighting strike until I heard the sound, indicating how far away it was.
My spot was extra cosy when residents would leave on vacation. Their plants would be brought up here to the daylight and the custodian would water them in exchange for a small stipend.
Even though sitting on cold stone stairs wasn't exactly comfortable, I could easily spend hours here. I would browse through social media nonesense or consume an article on a topic that I enjoyed.
My favourite pastime, however, was reading. I wouldn't read conventional books, those were for in bed or in my favourite armchair. In my spot, I would read on Wattpad.
It was an online interactive environment for readers and writers. I could read countless stories on a plethora of topics for free and in exchange, I would leave comments for the author and vote for the Chapters I read.
Some writers wouldn't respond, others would send a generic thank you. But a few of them would make me feel like I was a part of their creative process.
My favourite author was known to me only as @the_devil_reborn. His biography gave very little information apart from a preferred pronoun and the fact that he had a pet snake named Gavin.
"Devil" wrote stories across various genres but all of them had queer main characters. His full books were pretty awesome but I honestly enjoyed his "Tales for the Dark" One Shot Collection the most.
For me they were like potent little snacks that gave me a boost during days where the drag of mundane monotony was almost crushing.
Whenever I saw that little "W" icon on the top of my screen, I would excitedly check to see if "Devil" had updated.
Today was such a day!
I had seen the notification at work half an hour before my shift ended. I ran up the stairs and didn't even go into my apartment, instead dropping myself directly in my spot. It was just after dark and the perfect time to read.
I opened the app and scrolled down to the new Chapter.
It was called "Saved".
