The spirit of Anzac
Fierce bullets zapped through the dusty air causing horror and fear to manifest and spread within the Australian soldiers as they wobbled in the small boats that slowly drifted to shore. I was in one, with dirt covering my cold face and ragged clothes. It took every ounce of strength in my sweaty body to not cry out. Bombs rained down at us, exploding all around. I wasn't sure if I would still be alive another second but I had hope. My rifle rattled on my back and my hands held onto the oar, moving it as fast as possible. I looked out to the left and saw boats sinking and blood being shed.
"Keep paddling!" yelled out someone ahead, in my boat.
"We're almost there!" He yelled again
I clenched my sore teeth, and my shaking hands started to throb from the aching pain. Smoke rose in the air, as fire caught onto the wooden boats. I looked up and saw a bomb coming our way,
"Brace for impact" yelled a general,
It went close to our ship and exploded. Colours of orange and red lashed out at the air, and a loud bang echoed through the battle field. My ears rang, and my heart beat loud and fast, so much that I could hear it thumping at my chest over the ringing noise, the pain was so unbearable that I had to yell out,
"Arrrghhh" I screamed
Someone fell down, the life drained from their body in seconds, I knew they were dead. The tears dripped down my face, but I knew I had to keep strong, I kept paddling. I was determined to get to the shore and I knew that by this point nothing would stop me. Despair, pain and agony flew around, choosing their next poor victim. It was when you would give in that caused you to fall.
It had happened, we had finally reached the shore and I jumped out, even how much it hurt me to run I kept doing it. I slid down behind a barrier and stayed there, then someone else appeared by my side. A fellow soldier fighting the same war. He looked at me and spoke
"We can do this, just stay strong,"
"I'm right behind you," I said
I took the dangerous rifle off my back as I crouched on the hard, wet ground and peeked over the boxes, the turks shot and I returned fire. I was hoping that a speeding bullet would reach its next victim but nothing did. My new friend ran closer to them, crouching behind another wall. I followed, the puddles underneath me splashing at each step I took. The explosions kept coming, as well as the bullets. We continued on then stopped, I shot over and over again. Instead of missing this time I hit people, they fell one by one but there were too many. Soldiers on my side dropped to the ground blood pouring out of there bodies.
We went to the right and continued to run then went around to the side. We flanked ahead a bit then shot. Even if the others weren't on my side I was still sad as they dropped to the ground. A bullet zapped past me just missing my skin, it may not have hit me but it hit something else. I turned and saw blood dripping out of my friends body. He looked at me his mouth gaped open then he fell to the ground.
"Nooo!" I yelled
I held his feet and dragged him back to cover, hoping I wouldn't end up the same as him. He grabbed my hand,
"You'll be ok," I said trying to reassure him,
I got bandages and tied them around his arm, but it was no use, the blood kept coming.
"I'm scared," he replied
"It's ok," I said
Then he stopped gripping my hand, the life drained from his body the same as it did to thousands that day. His blood soaked into the Earth, the red from the soldiers grew larger.
"The turks are winning, they have the height advantage we will never beat them!" Yelled out a soldier
I started to write this letter that would hopefully get to my wife back at home to let her know I love her. I walked over to the messenger and handed him the letter
"Get this to my wife," I said
"I will," he replied
I walked through the trenches, past the dead and the dying. Past the soldiers that were fighting and trying to defeat the turks.
"We've knocked them back attack now," Yelled a lieutenant
We charge forwards, feet thumping against the ground like a wild stampede. Then it happened, the machine gun crackled and started to shoot, the bullets zapped through the air killing us in seconds, I continued to run. A bullet hit me and I stepped back and fell, other soldiers were beneath me and started to fall on top as well. I knew I wouldn't of survived anyway. We were like lambs to the slaughter, the turks had all the advantages, despair had taken over and had made us loose.
100 years later: Rose walked through the vibrant space. Trees shot up high and beautiful buildings shone in the sunlight. She took a deep breath in as she walked through the neighbourhood. She arrived at the venue then waited. When it was time she stood on top of the platform and held out a piece of paper, then spoke with a valiant, inspirational voice
"Everyone, 100 years ago was a ghastly event, it was ww1 and thousands upon thousands of our loyal soldiers died fighting to save us, they may have lost, but their bravery carried on. My granddad died fighting for his country in Gallipoli like many others that day on the 25th of April 1915. He passed on a letter that day that made it to his wife who passed it on to their daughter, who eventually passed it on to me, and that letter read, Dear Sophie, We are being pushed back and our chances of winning are low, if I do die here, I am so sorry that I left you guys by yourself without anyone else. Soon we are going to push forward and I don't know how much longer I'll be alive, hopefully this will change the war and we might win. I love you very much as I do my daughter, Love Mark we held onto this letter as a reminder of the bravery and if our soldiers would not have fought so valiantly this land we flourish in may have turned into ash and dust, and for that I am thankful, lest we forget,"
"Lest we forget," repeated everyone else.
