Chapter Twenty-Four: "Blind Luck"

Sean coughed more water, his whole body was shivering. Logan rubbed his arm and chest as he snuggled against his back. Logan barely had any warmth to him. After a minute, Logan told him seriously. "This isn't working... We need to get you someplace warm." Sean tried to point to the door, his teeth chattering out. "M-m-mark?" Logan thought about it but said rationally. "No. He's locked in there. He won't have what we need." Sean shook his head. He wanted to see Mark. Logan stomped through the water on the floor toward an open hatch door. Touching it, he grinned and told Sean a little excited. "This is the Ceres." Slipping inside a bit, he checked it out. Heading back to him, Logan picked him up off the wet floor, telling him a bit strained. "It's clear. Come on. We need to get you warm quickly." Sean tried to protest but his body felt numb. Hopping inside, Logan laid him across the floor and raced around to find something. He opened every secure cabinet and emergency cases, until he removed a suit that Sean recognized.

Mark had worn a suit like it. A thermal suit. Rushing back to him, Logan told him a bit rushed. "Ok. Can you get your clothes off or do you need help?" Sean shook his head, stiffly sitting up. He managed to pull his shirt off just fine... but the buttons to his pants were another story. His fingers were so numb that he couldn't feel them and just bending them felt delayed. Logan grabbed his hands in an attempt to warm them, mumbling out. "That's not good..." Logan rushed away, tossing stuff from cabinets. Finding a medical bag, Logan opened it and dug through it. Sean watched him grab a blanket and plug it into the wall of the shuttle. Flipping it out, he draped it over Sean. The blanket was soft and was starting to grow steadily warmer. Logan reached under the blanket to unbutton his pants for him, then told him hopefully. "I'm gonna look to see if Mark's stuff is here. Just stay there." Sean worked to get his wet clothes off, then huddled tightly in the large blanket. The blanket was a big help.

After a few minutes, Logan came back with some of Mark's clothes. Sean took them, unable to resist smelling them. Mark's scent calmed him. Staying hidden in the blanket, Sean slipped on Mark's clothes. They were a bit baggy on his slimmer frame, but they were comfortable. Logan gave him the thermal suit next, informing him coolly. "Here. They always have a spare for emergencies. You are going to need it." Sean let Logan help him to his feet to slip the suit on carefully. Unable to put his shoes back on, he just slipped on Mark's socks. Logan hugged him to his chest once he was able to stand on his own feet without help. Hugging Logan back, he thanked him. Logan quivered a bit, nervously saying. "I'm sorry..." Sean patted his back, nicely telling him. "It's alright. You didn't know. You saved my life. That is all that matters." Logan took a step back from him, pointing back out as he told him. "Shall we? We don't know what else is beyond that door..." Sean took a deep breath, answering firmly. "Give me my bag. Then do it."

Logan hopped back out into the docking bay, collecting the bags. Tossing his own bag into the Ceres, he handed Sean his bag. Sean opened his bag, searching through it for the hot sauce and Mark's bed knife. Discreetly putting the hot sauce in his suit pocket, he snapped the handle of the knife to an equipment loop on the side of his suit. Dropping his bag with Logan's, he gave him a nod and said aloud. "Alright. Let's do this." Logan collected Whitney to put her in the warm blanket, then said confidently. "On it." Transforming back, he dressed in clothes from his dad's stuff and jogged out to the computer. Looking over the codes, he typed them in. The computer typed things out and Logan read them over before typing more. Sean could barely keep up with how fast he was typing. Snorting, Logan gruffly mumbled out. "Whoever did this, they really didn't want to let him out. They've scrambled this computers memory." Sean stepped down from the Ceres, avoiding the wet spots on the floor as he asked him anxiously. "But you can fix it, right?"

Logan counted softly to himself, then typed more into the computer. While Logan typed, he uttered out in a low distracted tone. "Ya... It's just a bunch of math spam. The computer is playing a set of games... answer them all and..." With a loud 'hiss' the hatch door opened. Logan grinned, gesturing to the door as he said. "There ya go. Easy." Sean rushed past Logan, stumbling through the hatch. In the small room, Mark stood by a large barred off window that overlooked the vastness of space. His heart leapt for joy and he ran toward him. Mark turned slowly to face him, opening his arms as Sean leapt into his embrace. Hugging him tightly, Mark told him in a warm voice. "Are you ok?" Sean nodded, telling him with tears brimming his eyes. "Yes. I... Mark, I was so worried. What happened? Why are you locked in here?" Mark took a shaky breath, telling him a bit rattled. "Well, there are giant lizards running around trying to eat everyone. The crew... they didn't make it. I'm all that is left. I tried to get back to the ship, but they must have damaged the controls because... I got locked in."

Sean stepped back, saying a bit confused. "What...? But you said that the crew was fine." Mark bowed his head, admitting grimly. "I know. I lied. I didn't want you to leave me. I failed them... And didn't want you to think that I-" Logan stepped slowly into the hatch, stating out in a defensive tone. "Sean, get away from him." Sean looked back at Logan. Logan looked tense. Sean shrugged, asking just as defensively. "What? Why?" Mark put a hand on Sean's shoulder, asking him in a sweet voice. "Who is your friend, Sean?" Sean smiled at Mark, gesturing to Logan as he said. "This Logan. He's looking for his-" Logan cut Sean off, by growling out. "Sean! That's NOT Mark." Sean narrowed his eyes on Logan, retorting sternly. "What makes you think that?" Logan snorted aggressively, growling out through his teeth. "His scent." Mark's hand squeezed Sean's shoulder gently, telling him calmly. "I'm sure I smell bad... I've been running and have gotten spit on by those things. I've probably got all kinds of filth on me." Sean sniffed the air, but his nose wasn't as good as Logan's.

Logan stopped moving, upon telling Sean desperately. "Sean, trust me. You've seen this same trick at lunch." Sean thought about it, then slowly turned to face Mark. He couldn't tell the difference, but he held out his hand and told him seriously. "You can give me my gift now." Mark raised an eyebrow in response, chuckling out. "Your gift? Why would I carry that on me? It's on the ship. Come on, I'll show you." Mark started to walk around him, taking his arm as he tried to coax him toward the Ceres. Sean didn't move. His heart sinking to the pit of his stomach. Pulling his arm from Mark's grip, he turned and told Logan with a certainty. "It's not him." Mark faced him with a hurt look, saying completely shocked. "What? How can you think that? I had to put the gift someplace safe." Sean looked Mark in the eyes, stating out sternly. "Mark would never take it off. You're not him." Mark's face fell into a stony expression. Sean flashed him a disapproving smirk in return. This imposter knew nothing about the star necklace Mark planned to give him.

A grin spread across Mark's face, flashing him sharp reptilian teeth as his eyes turned a bright reptilian green. Sean reached for his knife, unsheathing it as the reptilian shoved him back with enough force to knock him off his feet. Logan leapt at the Reptilian's back, but a long blue tail lashed around Logan's human neck and flung him into the barred off window. The Reptilian cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders as he said playfully. "This will be almost too easy." Sean staggered to his feet, yelling out. "That's what you think!" Sean started to run at him with his knife raised. The Reptilian hunched up his shoulders, opening his mouth to spit a jet stream of red liquid at Sean's face. The liquid hit Sean in the eyes, causing him to scream as it burned. Dropping the knife, Sean cupping his face. The Reptilian hissed and Logan screamed out. "SEAN, MOVE!" Sean tried to move, but he couldn't see. The Reptilian tackled him to the ground, his hands grabbing Sean's wrist to pin them to the floor.

Sean felt hot breath against his throat before the dripping of saliva. Thrashing around uselessly against the Reptilian's grip, he screamed. He felt the sharp points of teeth, before Logan yelled out. "Get away from him!" The Reptilian yelped as it was yanked back by its tail, its teeth nicking Sean's neck. Sean balled up, watching blurry shadows attack each other. They were slamming each other around and hissing aggressively. Sean patted the floor, trying to find Mark's knife. Logan yelped as he was lashed in the face with a tail. The Reptilian kicked Logan in the chest so hard that he was sent up into the metal ceiling. Logan hit the floor, coughing. Just then Sean found the knife. Picking it up, he watched the blurry shadow of the Reptilian move over Logan to hiss down at him. "Poor baby... Do you have any idea how fucking old I am?" Sean scrambled to remove the hot sauce bottle from his pocket, yelling out to stall him from killing Logan. "Hey, Arsehole! You want him? You have to kill me first!"

The Reptilian chuckled darkly, before purring out menacingly as he crept toward him. "Gladly." The Reptilian crawled over to him on all fours, then slowly rose onto two legs. Sean winced at the menacing blurry shadow but unscrewed the cap of the hot sauce. As the Reptilian leaned his head down to his level, Sean removed the cap and flicked some of the hot sauce onto the Reptilian's face. The Reptilian shoved Sean to the floor with a startled scream. Sean hit the floor, watching the blurry shadow claw at its face as it screamed out. "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?! AHH! IT BURNS!" Sean chuckled, hoping he was as blind and suffering from the same burning pain as himself. Sean then gasped as Logan's blurry form rose off the ground with a deep growl. Logan's tail wrapped around the Reptilian's neck, smashing his face into the computer monitor. After slamming his face to the computer, Logan grabbed the Reptilian's neck and slammed his head into the bolted down metal coffee table. The table dented and the Reptilian made sickening gurgling noises. Logan's voice turned murderous as he growled out. "You're fast... but I'm STRONGER!"

Sean gasped, watching Logan's blurry body slam the Reptilian to the floor, before putting a hand to its head. Applying his strength, Sean scooted away from them as he heard a strange cracking sound. The Reptilian thrashed beneath Logan, but stopped as a sickening 'CRACK' echoed throughout the room. Sean sat very still. He was afraid to move. Logan backed away from the body, his voice turning back to normal as he whined out. "Oh my god... The smell..." Sean capped the hot sauce, slipping it back into his pocket. Logan snorted and gasped for air but asked him a bit strained. "Sean? You ok?" Sean nodded, then mumbled out. "He got me... I can't see. Am I going to go blind? It burns so bad..." Logan grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the body of the Reptilian. Cupping his face in his scaly hands, Logan looked over his face before answering softly. "I see. Don't rub your eyes. It's not permanent. It can be washed out."

Logan pulled him to his feet, helping him sheath his knife. Guiding him to a counter, Logan rummaged through a cabinet. Removing what looked like a box, he removed some bottled water and told him to kneel down. Sean kneeled, trying hard to resist rubbing his dry and burning eyes. Logan opened a bottle, pouring some into the large scaly palm of his clean hand. Holding it for him, he talked him through lowering his eyes down into the water. He felt weird doing this, but the feeling of relief was worth it. The second he sat up though, the dry feeling was back but it was slightly less than before. Logan wiped his hand on his pants, then poured fresh water over his hand again. As Sean leaned in to soak his eyes, Logan told him in a soft voice. "I've never killed anyone before..." Sean felt Logan's hand start to shake and touched his hand to steady him. While still soaking his eyes, he told Logan in a comforting voice. "He was going to kill us. It was self-defense." Logan bowed his head to put his forehead to Sean's shoulder, upon grimly saying. "It didn't feel like self-defense... I was angry... I... I just wanted him to stop moving."

Sean lifted his head, telling Logan gently. "Logan... He was never going to stop. What you feel now. That's what sets you apart from him." Sean's eyes cleared a bit as his body started crying to counter the dryness of his eyes. Allowing him to see the scratches on Logan's face and neck. Reaching out, he touched Logan's bleeding lip and asked him like a concerned parent. "Are you ok?" Logan smirked a little, then hugged him. Hugging him back, Sean reminded himself how young Logan was. He was brave, certainly... but every child had a breaking point. Hugging him a little tighter, Sean comforted him as he heard Logan sniffle. He didn't know how a reptilian father would comfort his son... but he comforted him as best he could. Just as Logan was settling down, the other hatch was yanked open to reveal a woman that Sean didn't know. The woman held a wrench tightly, her eyes darting from the dead Reptilian to Logan. She seemed to be in shock as she panted, before raising a nail gun directly at Logan. To Be Continued...
